The abiding memory I have of Star Wars is travelling on the bus with my late father to the Odeon Nottingham in the summer of 1977 - I was 10... I love the film but especially love the film as it reminds me of my old man... simple as that, oh and my Blue Nile recommendation for anybody interested in "Because of Toledo" from the album High... Paul's use of language and story telling on that track makes me cry... simply stunning piece of music

The whole of the Blue Nile's album Hats is perfection. Beautiful, late night sounds that invoke rainy city streets (and that Edward Hopper painting, Nighthawks). There's a current band called Paper Kites whose most recent album has a similar mood to Hats. Both incredible.

I grew up with all sorts of John Williams music as a kid. Having shootouts and light saber duels out back while my Dad filmed us to the Meco Star Wars disco album! I was kinda shocked when I first heard Korngold's "The Sea Hawk" a decade or so ago. Not only was the big brass there but those sweeping string/flute swells. Either way Williams was my first composer hero. Then came Elfman ;) *hint hint* future guest/score to discuss? Thanks for continuing these weekly episodes. Can't wait for next week!

Really interesting interview. Gary Barlow seems like a really humble guy despite how obviously successful it is which is really nice to see and you can tell how passion and excited he is still by music and audio in general. I liked the Star Wars discussion too. I've been listening to a podcast called The Art of the Score which is amazing. My only problem with it is they only release a podcast once every two months but they analyze film scores and they have quite a few episodes on John Williams and the Star Wars scores in particular. The original movies are still okay at least in terms of the production and creature designs but the score really elevates those movies. I thought people in the comments here might like the podcast though if they hadn't heard it before. This channel is great too. Btw, I had never heard of The Blue Nile. I just listened to them now, thanks for the recommendation. It does have a Talk Talk vibe that sounds like what I think we're their last two albums, Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden. A band that I love said the Talk Talk Laughing Stock album was an influence which you can hear but is more like just a general vibe than a direct descendent are a band call Labradford especially Mi Media Naranja which also has echoes of Ennio Morricone, particularly his western scores

Metro, The Guggenheim Grotto etc. All these great bands with extremely amazing timeless top level compositions, production and musicianship... didn’t make it out of a really small group of listeners. The idea that great music will at some time rise up through to recognition and success is just a little naive. So much fantastic music - and not just niche - gone - almost never heard - lost in the annals. Great interview though. Two extremely charming, erudite humans. Thanks for that:) Oh! Success is a very subjective thing. Having made music for over 50 years and never really being that successful am one of the most successful people in my life... because I make music that I love every day:) And can live from it:))))

Great to see Gary talking about his career, he seems like a really genuine bloke. Star Wars: 1977 my mate Pat and me walking down Tottenham Court Road one Sat evening, we come up to the Dominion. The film showing is Star Wars, we thought, what's this? Shall we go in and watch it? Yeah, why not. That night totally changed our lives lol. We came out of that theatre running down the street wielding our imaginary light sabres and blasters lol. We got to where i had parked my car, and off we drove home, i nearly drove off the road, there was a very tall office block down Tottenham Court Road and it was very late and only the top floor of the building was lit up. I thought it was the Millennium Falcon lol. The following week, we both went to the record shop and both bought the double album soundtrack of Star Wars. That was the first soundtrack score i had ever bought.

Still never seen Star Wars and probably never will - it wasn't on tv as a kid and I didnt go to the cinema till I was a teen, so I missed the moment. I knew someone who'd seen that and the Empire Strikes back 14 times each by the time we were 11 - such fanaticism put me off! Anyway, I've had the The Blue Nile 'Hats' album for about 30 years - soulful stuff. It has aged pretty well, mostly. 'From a late night train' is the ultimate break-up song...

I reckon Christian has been watching too many movies of late, and now doing some method sampling, could he be working on long awaited Delay Lama 2020!? Lucas had those stories pinned down, maybe not written down, but he knew how they would unfold, it is classic narrative stuff in terms of themes - if you have ever studied film and story structure it is obvious. The Luke and Leia, brother & sister thing, was planned. We forgot in this prissy modern age how dark we were in the 1970/80's. Go watch The Goonies, it was a classic kids film, full of swearing, violence and sick humor. I sat down to watch it with my nephew and had to switch it off. And the classic would be, Back To The Future. Imagine pitching that today as a family film; kid goes back in time, invents music for black people and his Mum tries to get into his pants, resulting in his Mum and Dad not hooking up and screwing him into existence, creating a stupid paradox so he starts to not exist. Now, stupid non-paradox aside, no way is that getting made today - probably why they failed to re-boot it recently, too problematic. And Gary, that jumper needs to be locked down.

Regarding Star Wars, I don't understand why Dvorak's "symphony of the new world" never gets mentioned. A lot of the time I feel like I'm definitely listening to the Star Wars score. Especially the fourth "Allegro con fuoco" movement. And it's the same with a lot of other Dvorak pieces and some other corresponding Williams score. A lot more often than Holzt, at least to my ears.

OK so this video is great because it's got two people who I look up to. Also it made me think 🤔 about a problem maybe the community can help eachother out with. The problem is Kontakt of all things. It's great, but it doesn't half slow workflows down when projects are opened from more than one computer. Is the batch re-save option really worthwhile, when you know the file paths you set, will get messed up by projects being opened up on another machine, as suggested already? It took a long time the other day to relink samples from a huge folder of 14 thousand to scan through. All the batch re-save does is save the file paths set by the user for quicker loading time, for it to be unliked by a separate drive with the a different file path name at the beginning! I've now resorted to cloning my drive to match the exact file path names for my brother to work on some material with me. He hates the fact it can take a long time to relink samples since I've been working on it on my system. My question to the community is... "Does batch re-save help with a multi computer working environment? I'm computer savvy, my brother struggles with it, and all he wants to do is record some guitar to my stuff, without the waiting times! His computer is a mac pro 5.1, better than what I've got, but he hardly uses it because of problems like Kontakt. But I make good use of it building projects up on it. Because we don't have two computers each to use sample content with, both machines are used for the tiny business of video production with nothing out there for us at the moment. Now's the time we want to work on music, and get some releases out there without all the hassle companies cause us. I tell ya what, a Fierce Panda release years ago was a good effort at trying to make it. This time around it's not for money, just for the time machine of streaming platforms. That's how we co-exist after we've put an amen to it!

Great chat Christian with... as you say... "a true gentleman". Regarding Star Wars, the anecdote I've heard is that George wrote a story about 'Space Pirates', but broke it up into sections for the films as it was too long. Episode IV being the one with least armies and therefore easier to film, but still having a strong narrative. I think he worked the plot point of Darth being Luke's father in from the start as it 'balances' the Force.... Father/Son and Evil/Good... But the brother/sister connection kind of plays out in IV as Luke's a bit rubbish with The Force at this point, but knows he needs to save her... Yet after training with Yoda in V works out who his father is, but not sister... Then the reveal in VI about the sister. Seems a bit convoluted, but if your first movie bombs you don't have to explain anything... It didn't... Long live Star Wars 👍
