I would almost agree but kinda could argue him being the most underrated. I'd probably have Chris Cagle at the top of that list.

Gary Allan is from California and he has what many call the Bakersfield sound. I've seen him live in concert many times and he's always phenomenal. He has a very good album that was written after his wife committed suicide and the emotions are definitely felt through that album. I saw him in concert shortly after and you could tell that he was struggling to sing some of the songs. He has a list of great songs but two of my favorite are Man-to-Man and I Get Off on the Pain.

This song officially made me a Gary Allan fan in the Fall of 1999 when it came out. It was one of those songs at the time that I just couldn't wait to hear on the radio again, and every time I did hear it, it blew me away and gave me chills. I absolutely love everything about it, from the beautiful haunting melody, the lead and steel guitar, Gary's smoky vocals, and just the whole dark and brooding feel of it. It's still my most favorite song of his, personally. Also, the video is just so cool, and it fits the song perfectly, imo. Gary is one of those artists who has remained very underrated despite having a string of hits that went from 1996 up to the early 2010s. I especially enjoy his first six albums when his music was a mix of traditional country, honky tonk, and rock influences. My favorites are 1998's It Would Be You and 1999's Smoke Rings In The Dark. More of his singles I recommend hearing are "It Would Be You," "Loving You Against My Will," "Right Where I Need To Be," "Man To Man," and "Best I Ever Had." You also can't go wrong with just about any album cut from those first six albums of his. Btw, I'm also someone who is almost always attracted to the music and overall sound of a song first and only pay attention to the lyrics on repeated listens, so I get Keith's reaction to this song.

Gary has long been one of my favorites . This has always been one of my go to songs, but the one that gets me and helped me through so many nights is "Every storm runs out of rain!" He has one of the most heart breaking stories, which contributed some to him not having hit as big as he could. And you did do one of his.. not one of his better ones, IMO. Dustin.. It has always had that AZ or NM feel to it to me, too. Thanks guys.

Gary Allan is my favorite cpuntry artist. He has 40 songs that make you think and get in your feelings. His songs are so real. And he has quite a few songs that cross over to country rock or even blues. He is phenomenal. Also. His wife killer herself in the mid 2000s. If you know that information and listen to his first CD After that happened you can just feel the heartbreak and grief in every song. There is nothing like it.

Gary Allen is amazing. Now considered an older singer, but He can keep up with the best of old country like George Jones, Waylon, Johnny Cash, John Conlee, Conway, and John Anderson. Dwight Yoakam is another one that is now considered old, but can run with the older ones. He has so many great songs. Here's some great ones by Gary: The One, Right Where I need To Be, Best I Ever Had, Life Ain't Always Beautiful, Get Off On the Pain, Watching Airplanes, Loving You Against My Will, Tough Little Boys, Songs About Rain, Man to Man, Learning How to Bend, and Her Man. in October of 2004 Gary's wife committed suicide, and his songs got really deep afterwards for awhile. But still, all really good.

So I’m late to see this but I am loving how much y’all love Gary’s voice! He’s been my favorite since he first came out in 96. I’m from Texas but I lived in the Phoenix area for 4 years in the early 2000s. Several times he would have a concert and give all the proceeds to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. He didn’t write this song. My favorite song his is The One and I also really like It A’int the Whiskey.

Gary Allan is my favorite simply because his songs tend to make you feel something, make you think, or make you reflect. He's so underrated it is criminal. Plus, he's lived many of his songs, so the songs hit harder. His wife killed herself after suffering from severe migraines and depression. She was also an airline stewardess, if memory serves me well, and so "Watching Airplanes" and "Right Where I Need To Be" are sort of references to that. There were a couple albums that sort of revolved around Gary's grief over losing his wife, and then he snapped out of it with "No Regrets", and with that song, he'd sometimes choke up on stage, take a swig of Jack Daniels, and power through it. So the sadness, grief, loss, lonliness in his songs and in his voice has a touch of authenticity. Other artists, even the greatest and most popular don't really live their songs and bring stuff like Gary out in people. Gotta do more Gary Allan songs! Edit: I believe you did see a Gary Allan song before, and if I remember right, you guys thought he was too studio produced/manufactured. I believe the song was "Songs About Rain". I thought you both were wrong about that assumption, if it was indeed you guys that said it (I watch many reaction channels about Gary Allan's music). For the record, Gary Allan isn't one to conform to studio exec BS, and I think he recently dropped his label and is going for straight to online productions of his music and videos. I could be wrong on that though. He ditched the hat to symbolically show he was ditching the manufactured-ness that was popular at the time in country (and still is today). Oh, and some influences on Gary are the likes of Del Shannon, and he even does a cover of "Runaway". He's also in that Bakersfield sound along with Dwight Yoakam, Buck Owens, and Merle Haggard. But it shouldn't be surprising since Gary is a California boy. So toss in a lil bit of that surfer rock from the 50s in there too. YOU MUST GO DOWN THE GARY ALLAN RABBITHOLE! You'll thank me later!
