Just amazing! You have such a comprehensive knowledge base. Your explanations are so easy to follow and love that you explain how the process works at the end. I usually use a crochet hook to pick up the stitches from the garter tab, but I'm going to try the provisional CO the next time.

Since watching this tutorial of yours, I just ignore the written instructions now for the beginning garter tab of top down shawls and use your provisional cast-on method. The result is beautiful, no "knit-zit" from the slipknot and when you have worked your pattern, and you have sewn in the tail, the cast on it totally just as beautiful as the rest of the shawl. The provisional cast-on looks identical to the stitches for every row, which is what I want. Thank you so much for your incredible explanation. My pattern actually has a 4 stitch tab with the edge stitched slipped beginning of each row. Very nice with your method. When working a lace shawl, they are very beautiful. They are a knitter's masterpiece and it is nice to make it as mistake-proof as you can.

Thank you for making this video. It was very helpful of you to physically point out the garter ridges, I was having a lot of trouble identifying them. I do appreciate that you noted that the original cast on stitches can be hard to spot. These are both things I was having trouble with and they were hampering starting my project. The provisional cast on was interesting option. I have bookmarked this video for future reference.

The instructions goes like.Using Provisional cast on 3 st and knit 21 rows.Rotate he resulting garter tab90 degrees clockwise and pick up 9 st along the side of the garter tab skipping the first st.. Remove waste yarn from provisional cast on and pick up he resulting 3 stitches on your lest needle.Knit hem you end up with 15 stitches on your needle? It all jumbol up for me.Thanks so much

My pattern said Garter Tab cast on 3 stitches using provisional cast on and knit 21 rows . Rotae the resulting garter tab 90 degree clockwise and pick up 9stittches along he side of garter tab. Why do the pattern required to knit 21 rows when you only kai 6 row. Knit 21 rows does not make into 9 stitches i will be 10 stitches , please clarify for me. Thanks

The last row you knit is still on the needle, so you really can't pick up from that stitch, you have to go to the row just below for the firs pick up.

Knitting with Suzanne Bryan, thanks for your reply. I did see where you used those stitches to pick up, but I guess I thought provisional was only used when you want to have live stitches to knit in a different direction, for example. Like to add a border, etc. So now I am learning that isn't always the case - sometimes it is just personal preference, if I am understanding correctly. Thanks!
