I played the drums on that album. We had no idea it was going to go big. I think I did the drums in one take thinking it wasn’t going to be on the album because of the F bomb. The true star here is the writer Gaye Delorme. He was an amazing guitar player and song writer.

When you say that Gaye Delorme was amazing, you're almost understating his abilities. I've got a signed copy of his "Blue Wave Sessions" CD kicking around somewhere. I accidentally left it in my sister's car in Australia and had to wait a couple of years to get it back to Calgary.

This takes me back about 30 years to a drinking establishment in my home town of Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire, UK, called Lasers (RIP) and Sunday night was always pool night among the gang I used to hang out with then. We were shooting a game when the DJ announced he had a new song just come in from a friend of his who lived in Canada, and he asked us to have a listen and tell him what we thought of it. As you can imagine, as soon as the first line comes in we were rolling around on the floor with laughter. I think one or two of us possibly peed their pants, they were laughing so much. I think I might have given myself a hernia! No surprise it was played every Sunday night for years, possibly until the bar closed its doors for the last time. I'm so glad I found it here as I'm going through some tough times mentally these days and playing this really is great therapy... Suffice to say I'll be annoying my colleagues at work tomorrow with my terrible singing. Thanks for posting this, it's a great help to me.

One of the more entertaining songs to sing karaoke (if the KJ has it) because: 1) it's a two minute song, 2) you don't need to be a great singer and 3) it's profanity-laden just enough to get people laughing but not obscene. Even better when the bar owner tells you "don't sing that rodeo song" and when he leaves the KJ has you sing it anyway.

Got a copy of this from the record rep on the day it was pressed and arrived in Edmonton. I was DJing at a very popular club (where the Oilers hung out) and spun it that night. You could have heard a pin drop the first time but by the third night I could play just the intro and the entire room would sing the rest. Gaye Delorme wrote a great song and Showdown had a great cover!

I was working at CKY Radio in Winnipeg in 1981 (might have been 1980) and a salesman from CKLG Calgary (also part of the Moffat chain of radio stations) came in with a recording of this song saying that they had recorded it in their studio so I might have been one of the first to hear it. Can't remember who he said recorded it but it was this version for sure. I use it in my show for shock value if I think the crowd is up for it. Calgary (at least at that time) had the biggest rodeo in Canada (and maybe even North America) so I doubt it was inspired by Texas even if that's where this barbaric practice originated.

@@warren52nz wikkid!! I was also a C&W DJ in the 80’s at KACT but we couldn’t play stuff like that cuz the FCC would’ve had a conniption, but practically every jukebox in Texas had it and it was played a lot at dances. AND we’d sing it at Texas Tech football games 😂 Very iconic song!

@@no1noob194 don’t take offence - I’m merely tipping my Stetson to a song that means a lot to all North American vaqueros. Btw, in 1986 during a bust, a buttload of Texas oil workers left en masse for the Oil Sands and a big load of them were rodeo riders. So until this day Alberta has well-trained Texans and their offspring producing your oil and riding in your rodeos. You’re welcome. 😂

I took a copy of this to elementary school grade 2 (1982) that I borrowed from my cousin's J. & R. MacKnight I shit you guys not! 🤭😝🤣 I was a kid with an early fascination with the word "f**k"!😂 And in my later adult hood, (in 2015) when I met my half brother who was coincidentally primarily raised smack dab within 10-15 minutes away from the Stampede grounds.......I would sing this at him when he pissed me off & he never "quite" understood why! 🤦🏼‍♀️😃 But oh hell yeahhhhh this song still is great to play for people today with "sensitive" ears for damn sure!!!😂😂😂

I grew up a city boy in Columbus Ohio until my family and I moved to Colorado. I did my senior year of high school in Colorado Springs. Some of my teammates on the swim team my senior year started calling me 'Goat' which baffled me until they explained that the word goat and my last name together was a euphemism for 'cowboy'. After high school I met a guy I started hanging around and partying with who introduced me to Western culture. We would go to rodeos and gymkhanas. And we would go to western bars. One of those bars is a place called for Ralph's place and the house band are used to play this song all the time. Not long after I found out that this album had the song on it and purchased it. I still have it in my vinyl collection today. Good memories
