Garrett Vortex Does it need a Iron Bias and Tracking Ground Balance?

You will have to be the judge of that for yourself.

Nice Demo. Beginner/kids entry level machines I can see it being locked. Mid level and advanced machines should give the users the choice to open them up. Nokta/ML and XP have all given the users the option. Hopefully Garrett will as well.

Exactly, I'm ok with entry level machines not having options if a company is honest with its marketing claims of its capabilities.

******** When I hear someone say an iron bias control isn't needed on SMF detectors, I immediately think that they don't understand what the iron bias does and/or have not tested different IB settings on iron masked targets. If they did the latter, they would see that proper use of an IB control in iron, has a huge impact on the amount of good finds.

Automatic ground tracking to me is not needed.. Manual ground balance is far superior...I do agree the Vortex should most definitely update there tones or atliest have a option to change them.

Iron Bias on a $600 machine...maybe but I think that having 8 levels of Iron Bias and 5 levels of stability can be equally as dangerous as not having the option at all for most users. I mean how many years have we had mulit-freq and I still see the most common question is What freq should I be run for this scenario or what freq hits better on silver. Should I run M1 or M2 or Park1 or Field 2. If most of the user base doesn't yet understand the answer to these questions do you think they are testing Iron Bias settings in a test garden. I'd say active Iron Bias users who actually understand how it works are less than 5-10% of the market..IMO I could be wrong. I feel like and I'm quilty of this as well looking at what someone else runs for settings and blindling copying those settings for Iron Bias/Stability because lets be honest * at least on the legend whats the difference between an Iron bias of 4 with stability of 6 or Iron Bias 5 with stability 5 or Iron Bias 6 with Stability 4. I have an idea of the difference from my own testing but I can't guarantee it's working as designed at each new site I go to. I personally would almost prefer to either have a factory iron bias with the option to turn it off and dig more iron and/or used techniques to work around digging iron like rotating 90 degrees or lifting the coil to see if its a large iron object, etc... than having too many settings and end up questioning if I am running the "right" program all the time. I'll admit on a personal level that some of the machines with the most settings/features I've owned the V3i, Etrac, Nox, Legend - have been the ones that I spent the most time questioning if I was running the "right" setting for that environment. Some of the machines with the least amount of settings the ORX, MX5* years ago where pretty much turn on and go and I had just as much confidence in those machines as I did the ones with more features. If its a feature that is critical to the type of hunting you do then I completely understand - Ground Balance Tracking on wet sand I understand...

I can't speak for all machines, but your comment about multi settings for iron bias on machines for beginners could be dangerous, on Minelab machines, there is presets for iron bias as well as othere settings that are there for the beginner. I feel like, for example, iron bias having multiple settings is important because people detect in different environments that require different settings for machine to be optimum. I used a Equinox 900 for about a year and spent at least six months trying different setting configurations. Beginners or people that just want to turn it on and go, can still have plenty of success by using presets.

Iron Bias on a Metal Detector in 2024 is a must imo...leave it at the factory default setting if your worried about it... Same thing as buying a locked iron bias machine...

There are no correct settings. That's why you NEED iron bias lol. YOU could leave it at the stock setting of 8 on the legend and be perfectly happy but I know from experience if you're in a heavy iron zone you'll mask out good targets. Basically you set the iron bias to knock out what you're digging the most of.....more or less. Which is usually nails. You don't set it based on what you think is in the ground......dig and adjust to what's actually there.

I wouldn't be very happy hunting iron infested sites with a preset IB, because I know how many good targets I'd be missing. IB can be difficult for many to grasp. They often can't seem to understand how it works or what it does. People often also confuse the IB with iron notch discrimination. As such, maybe it's not a good idea for the Vortex to have an IB control. I mean, it seems that Garrett users want simple and basic features and the IB is considered an advanced feature.

@@MrBottlecapBillI agree. I use Iron Bias/Filter on my Legend & constantly changing it to suit where I’m detecting. It’s a must now days. I keep my IF on Legend as low as possible. Most of the time I can run it at 1-2. Rarely falses on iron & if it does I’ll adjust it up 1 increment at a time. I also think the Bottle Cap reject feature on the Legend can help with big or deep iron. There is a slight trade off, but if you just turn the BC reject to 1-2 it will knock out a lot of that iron that will give you a high tone. I been using the Legend for about 3 years now & I feel like I got a good grip on the setting & how to make it perform at its best in whatever condition I’m detecting.
