Intro: First, let me share the most important background on this watch. The first thing that is important to note is that the Vivosmart 5 does not have on-board GPS, so you will still need to bring your phone if you want to track your route on your runs and rides. It can use the on-board accelerometer to estimate distance and also your pace if you do not have your phone with you, but this is not a full replacement of GPS by any means. It comes in two sizes, small/medium and large, so you will need to determine beforehand which size is the right one for you, and this could also make reselling slightly more tricky. The battery should last up to 7 days, if you do not use the continuous oxygen saturation measurements during the night, if you enable those features the battery life will drop to about 4 days. The Vivosmart 5 has a reasonable price at 150 dollars or 150 euros over here in Europe. The thing that bugs me most is that the screen of the Vivosmart is still monochrome, so basically black and white, and not in color. Where most competitors have moved on to full color displays, this feels a bit dated for a more premium smartband in 2022. Also, the Vivosmart 5 does not have Gorilla Glass, so it could potentially scratch a bit more easily. However, what matters for most of you on this channel is the health and sports tracking accuracy, so lets take a gander! Let’s start by looking at the features that performed best in my testing, and close off with the things the Vivosmart 5 did poorly. The thing I liked most about the Vivosmart 5 is it’s heart rate tracking.
Conclusion:
Overall, I am not very positive about the Garmin Vivosmart 5. The heart rate tracking is OK, but the other health and sport tracking features I tested appear mediocre or bad. Combine that with a design and monochrome screen that are quite dated, and I cannot generally recommend you buy the Vivosmart 5. Now, I did not go into things like body battery or stress, but I still think there are better alternatives, even from Garmin if you want to get into that ecosystem. The Instinct 2 for instance did quite well in my testing, though the sleep tracking is not great. If we move outside of the Garmin sphere, the Fitbit Charge 5 and Fitbit Luxe have pretty OK heart rate tracking and great sleep tracking, and both have a much more beautiful design and color screen. Overall, I’d give the Vivosmart 5 2.5 out of 5 stars based on my testing. I would personally rather use a Fitbit Charge 5 than the Garmin Vivosmart 5

    Even though you say ultimately don't buy, as a female with tiny wrists, I chose this tracker mostly based on your video. I like the simplicity of the display, the size, and I think it will be a great first time fitness tracker for me. I'm bummed it's overpriced and that REI doesn't sell it as they seem to sell everything else from Garmin.

    Hi Simon! Good question, and one which I haven't been able to figure out. I think one out of these three is most likely: (1) Weight --> the GT Runner is significantly lighter, and might stay in place better (2) Firmware ---> I tested the GT Runner later, so firmware might have improved (3) Random chance of testing --> Maybe the fit was worse a few days of testing the GT3 for some reason? Honestly, I am still unsure though

    I was really hoping the Vivosmart 5 would score well in your tests since I've decided to swear off Fitbit after my experience with the Charge 4 which was ridiculously buggy (and the refurbished replacement unit they sent was even worse), plus their customer support was tragically incompetent and, often times, unintelligible in both written and oral communications (in English)! Oh well... Thanks for another brilliant video all the same.

    I feel like the smartwatch market is saturated with full blown 'watch' type and size devices but no company is actively developing these discreet little bands , which quite frankly are the only choice for hardcore mechanical watch lovers who still want to stay on top of their health. I dont need no fancy ,big screen(keep it monochrome), features and oversized band, just gimme HR,steps,sleep and basic readiness statistics, GPS would also be a plus and refine the device to where it looks miniscule , like a small bracelet and make it last a month in smartwatch mode. I wanna wear my classic analog watch and also am a fan of tracking my runs and looking at my health and i just look dumb wearing two watches but i still do it, because fck it.

    I used the Vivosmart 4 for about a year, and I can corroborate the results of the Vivosmart 5, because these are pretty much the results I always got when using it, so I was reluctant about upgrading to the fenix 7X Sapphire Solar, because I was thinking, paying €900 for the same crappy results? Well, the fenix 7 obviously has better results, but it's still significantly worse than Fitbit Sense 2 (which I also bought after looking at TQS reviews), Whoop and Apple devices. That said, the fenix 7 is okay at health stats. The oxygen saturation has gotten much better and the sleep monitoring has also improved a lot. Personally I believe it's an algorithm update that's needed for the fenix 7, but I'm not sure the Vivosmart can improve with an algorithm update. I'm probably gonna buy a Garmin Vivomove Sport just to get better health stats in Garmin Connect, and I'll wear the Vivomove until Garmin corrects the fenix 7. It's just a damn shame that such an expensive Garmin still doesn't hold its own against a cheaper Garmin like the Vivomove.

  • @TheQuantifiedScientist

    @TheQuantifiedScientist

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Franco! Well, I am not sure. I wanted to test this at some point, but never committed to doing this. I think there are some issues with this, for instance: (1) Watches and software are not calibrated for this location, and this might throw things off. That doesn't mean that it couldn't be better this way if they were tweaked for the inner part of the wrist/ (2) People just don't wear watches like this generally, especially the thicker ones. I have found it cumbersome when trying personally, bumping the watches into things That all being said, maybe there is a scenario where it does make sense that I haven't thought of. Happy to be convinced

    @@TheQuantifiedScientist The scenario is garmin "rash". A common allergic reaction to the silicon straps they use since years. Many of my friends had that and it can be found thousand times in their online forums. People sometimes try switching arms daily, though it does not solve the problem all that well. Garmin has a left/right arm setting on most watches. I'd hope it changes something. I have this allergy issue with Garmin bands and it is very annoying. Even their nylon band caused rashes on my arm. Any cheap alternative Chinese replacement band works without any issue but is low quality and often doesn't even fit the watches without modification. I'd really like to know what is wrong with these bands. I even had their leather ones. They color your skin with the leather color and are NOT vegetable tanned, so basically cheap trash.

    I wish you went into the body battery feature! For me body battery is very helpful. I have ME/CFS and it seems to help me determine when I feel tired but don't really risk post-exertional malaise vs when ignoring my fatigue will set me back for days or more. I just use it for short walks and household chores, that's my "exercise". It was especially interesting to see my body battery crash completely when I had covid. I'm thinking of upgrading to another tracker, from my vivosmart 4, but would love to know if the body battery function is consistently reliable across Garmin devices and if any competitors have similar measurements. I guess it's just based on HRV, no? I also wonder if sleep quality affects the body battery calculations, because the vivosmart bands seem to be so bad at detecting sleep cycles. Your videos are always so informative! I'd love it if they shared some insights relevant to people with chronic disease, instead of just fitness tracking for healthy people. There seems to be little information for us, I expect because people are scared to give medical advice. But there's so much potential for tools like this to help people self-manage their symptoms. Any advice on a watch that combines good sleep tracking with a feature similar to body battery would be super welcome!

    @@user-me8jl2xi6v I still have the one I had last year, a vivosmart 4. I've had it for a couple years now and I do still use the body battery function to prevent post exertional malaise and bigger "crashes". It works well enough, but I would still like an upgrade to one that scores better on things like sleep tracking and it would be great to get an even better body battery function at some point.

    Hi Rob, after your review there's been a few firmare update, the device seems to be working pretty fine to me at this point, it would be cool if you would have the time to take a new test...just my 2 cents indeed :) I've been comparing the heart rate with a polar chest strap and results were pretty much accurate even with weights (apart biceps curls, where every wrist device seems to be struggling), even the sleep felt on point. I usually wake up at night and while fitbit stop recording my sleep once I woke up, even if I'm sleeping back few more hours (that's happening with all the fitbit devices I have), this little guy nailed it. I would be really curious to see if my personal experience would match a new test with your scientific approach! Thank you in advance, in any case:)

    I know people like to compare it to the Fitbit Charge 5, but the Luxe is a better comparison in terms of size and features. The Luxe is selling for $90 right now in some places. So imo, Garmin really dropped the ball with this pricing on this product. Which is a shame because some people actually like the looks of it.
