Garmin GNS 430 530 Holds | Unpublished Holds | OBS Button

We'll fly an unpublished unexpected hold using the Garmin GNS 430 or 530, and show why keeping a "clean cockpit" is important in these situations.

Great trick. I find it also keeps you from chasing the needle as much because GPS readings on the OBS are less sensitive (At least in my aircraft. Know your aircraft!) One thing to be careful with is using this on a check ride. My examiner failed the GPS during my hold effectively removing my ability to switch from GPS to VLOC so make sure if you have a NAV2 like he does, that you also tune your VOR on NAV2 so you have one CDI already indicating with a VHF backup.

Did this today on my mock check ride, works great. You also don’t have to worry about the cone of confusion, varying levels of sensitivity, etc when you deal with a vor. I also like setting up a hold in foreflight for my SA.

in chapter 6, after 2:40, the TO/FR did not switch in the CDI on the sim panel. Can you comment on this?

    1) so does the gps treat it like a vor by pressing OBS, or does it switch to the actual VOR receiver? 2) What if you are told to hold on a waypoint bearing, does this also work the same? The obs selector gives you bearings to the waypoint based on OBS?

    1. When you press OBS it doesn't switch to the VOR, it still uses the GPS, but acts like a VOR basically, but without the cone of confusion and the CDI sensitivity does not change with distance. It can do the same thing to a GPS waypoint that isn't a VOR, in case you need to hold at an intersection or a DME fix. 2. Yes, when you press OBS, the GPS will show your deviation from whatever bearing you select, much like a VOR.

I know it is not completely correct but i think of it this way: Pressing OBS tells the Nav unit to grab the next waypoint and focus only on it. Doesnt matter what that waypoint is. If the controler says the word "radial", I put that number at the bottom of my CDI display because a radial "radiates" from a point and the bottom of the CDI can be thought of as the "from" side. If he says "bearing" (although I have not yet had this happen) I put that number in the top of the CDI as I will be "bearing down on " (flying to) the waypoint and the top of the CDI is the "to" side.

Shouldn’t the flag also change in the OBI? It remained FROM

I think it did not because his receiver was set to GPS and the OBS needles and to/from is effectively not being used in OBS. I have the same question. The OBS knob seems to be used only when receiver is set to OBS to he can manipulate the magenta in the GPS.

Question :Why exceed a Standard rate of Turn entering the hold?

  • @CaptainCharlieBravo

Meaning because of the direct entry?

When entering the hold, a standard rate turn isn’t required. This is because the start of the outbound leg is measured from abeam the fix or when rolling wings level, whichever first. How fast you turn to get there on the entry makes no difference. The clock always starts at the same point.

@@RedSailor1701Wrong buddy. You never exceed std rate turn in ifr. Jets fly half std fyi. Ifr is all about smooth and concise turns.

@@pittiuomo123you are wrong, standard rate turns aren’t required anymore, but they are still useful for holds and consistency
