It’s not worth it. Just get a fenix 7. I tried them all. 7x, 7s and Epix. 7x too big for all day wear that it actually hurts my wrist. 7s is good in terms of HR accuracy and being light but it screams attention. The way it feels on my wrist. With Epix, although the screen is gorgeous, I can’t see it lasting 2 years with gesture mode. Will have screen burn in and battery life. Went back to Polar Vantage V2. Simple running watch. No gimmick and better sleep tracking with recovery tool.

Oh cmon. That’s not a bad price for a high quality watch. Plus you can get it for 20% off easily anyway.

I've had an Epix 2 for about a month and my experience (with similar levels of activity) is pretty much the same. Always on: around 6-7 days, Gesture / sleep mode: around 13-15 days. That's really very, very good for an AMOLED screen. I find gesture mode fine, as said here, it comes on almost instantly. It's also brilliant for night rides / runs where a tilt of the wrist will let me see pace or my route in the dark without having to press a button. Bigger battery drains are GPS with map onscreen and streaming music, but you'd expect that. The screen really is great. I need to wear reading glasses for most text these days but the Epix screen is so bright and sharp that I can read all of the data fields (and even some street names on the navigation map) without them, which is fantastic.

Yes mate I purchased the fenix 7x sapphire solar and returned straight away due to the display. Got the epix and no problem reading with out reading glasses.

@@TheZanshen Yes, I am finding that now as well after a year with my 7S. Annoying when doing exercises without glasses and wanting to go to a new set or check something, but alas, I can't return it. Still very happy since it is better for my smaller wrist and for sleeping with it.

Awesome man. I’ve been getting over 6 days w always on - Low brightness - wrist gesture on - and pulse ox off during sleep or otherwise. Excellent work on Garmin’s behalf. Great video.

I've had my Epix for 12 months now and cannot rate it highly enough. Good battery life and the screen is divine. I either mountain bike or long walk on alternate days and find this watch to be superb.

Great video. This is the primer question for a Epix x Fenix buying decision.

Edward, if you have an iPhone, it allows users to customize "per app" push notifications. This would only help if that customization matches your needs for both the Phone and Garmin EPIX 2. I compromised and made them agree :-)

I'm used to charging my Samsung every day so this is more than acceptable for me. Glad I bought this over the Fenix 7

That’s definitely acceptable! I’d want as a minimum two things: 1) Able to record an essentially all day activity (eg an ultra marathon or Ironman etc) and 2) last at least a week in general 24/7 wear plus normal training. So sounds like that’s pretty comfortable for this watch with the gesture mode

Thanks for the tip on the battery widget. I downloaded it and am looking forward to checking it out once it starts collecting some data. As for battery life, I use mine in AOD mode and I have consistently gotten 6 days out of it with no problems. I run about 30 miles a week so I'm GPS tracking 5 days a week. I'm super impressed with battery life on such a beautiful screen with AOD.

Turn your brightness down to the lowest setting and use gesture mode. You will easily double or triple battery life

@@thepatternforms859 I know exactly how it works. I'm no stranger to smart/fitness watches. I've had several. I always prefer to have AOD so I don't have to worry about the gesture and since this watch easily gets 6 days for me with AOD, I'm totally fine with it. I don't need it to last 16 days, I'm perfectly happy with 6 days on this beautiful OLED screen.

Great recommendation on the battery widget. I think a video on cool garmin widgets and apps would be very useful!

Had mine since public release, updated to 8.15 beta yesterday and have NEVER regretted this purchase. Easily get nearly 6 days on a charge with everything on. The only thing I don't like is the very hard to remove, if at all, springbars. Don't know why Garmin did that but never mind. Love the OLED display and coming from a lot of previous Fenix watches there is no change to button muscle memory. I still haven't turned touch screen on yet due to prior button ease of use.

I'm waiting for my Epix, due tomorrow. I was (and still am) very torn between Fenix 7X and Epix 2 but ultimately, I went with Epix 2 because the battery life argument, in my use case, will be a non-issue. The same reason that I didn't go for the Apple Watch 7, that thing has to be charged every freaking day. Can't handle that, but even once a week with E2 will be much better. The higher resolution also played a factor, although, I wish they'd have it in the 51mm size...

A tip for active people looking to stretch battery life: charge it while you take a shower! The running channel also gave this advice a while ago. I wear my epix 24/7 except for my shower time. run almost every day, most of times with music, earbuds, stryd and hrm tri connected. On other days I plat squash. Every morning and after every exercise I take a shower and charge. Keeps you clean and the battery sufficiently loaded for a long time

The connection on watch will wear a bit with each use, so charging it daily will theoretically make the connection wear more / faster.... (but then again, if the connection now fails within guarantee instead of out of warrantee.... )

Does it hurt the battery by recharging it so frequently? Your not supposed to let it drain down? Not sure if all the Garmin people know everything and are consistent but I had asked them a few weeks ago regarding the Fenix 7 and they told me I should let it drain lower until recharging it again to save on cycles.

I was lucky enough to be given a fenix 7 whilst waiting for my epix. I have to say I was a little hesitant with battery life predictions moving over to the epix. In the few days I've had it I literally can't understand what voodoo magic is making it last so long. Out of the box it had 85% I use it in gesture mode and I've been on two runs and regularly do circuits classes. 4 days in it is still showing 10 days left. And that screen is absolutely gorgeous. I would highly recommend this watch

I’m getting about 8-9 days from my Epix, gesture mode is just fine and super responsive, also don’t have it at full brightness unless during activity and use the sleep mode, going on my daily run of around an 45/50 mins and using music and GPS im going through about 6% of battery, the old 745 would go through about 15% during that run and I was charging that every 3 to 4 days!!! I also use other activity features regularly, mainly gym classes or Yoga but no music or GPS with those so battery drains a lot less. Overall though more than happy with the battery life.

Excellent videos regarding real usage. I am so excited to get my Epix Gen 2. Taking forever to arrive unfortunately. Ordered a black titanium sapphire edition on March 23 and Garmin emailed me an estimated Mid-May ship date. I did get mine for $800.00 though so it'll be worth it.

@@slraja83 I bought it direct from Garmin. I had a 20% off code. KZread took down my previous post. Apparently I wasn't allowed to say what App I used that gave me the code. It took a month to receive. Got it on April 25.

i had my epix gen2 with always on during activity for 5 hours trail running with all function ON, battery drops 20% from 85 to 65. Similar result as yours.

Hi Dave. Another really useful video! What really interests me is how the battery performs during a 100 mile technical (say 30 hour) ultra on those settings. My guess is that it hasn’t quite got enough to be confident your going to get to the end. So OK for 24 hour ‘easy’ ones but not for the knarly ones (without a cable). I guess though that is classic 7 territory - but it is a shame to sacrifice the lovely screen….

I think you could pull off a 30 hour ultra but yeah... it might be close. These are default settings results if you tweaked the brightness down to the lowest setting and disabled the Heart Rate sensor it would last a 100 miler easy.

Just returned the forerunner due to wanting a more durable body and am missing the screen size of the forerunner and I wonder if the rise to wake was quicker on the forerunner. Yes 15 days with gesture mode.... But gesture mode is something I can't accept. I like my watch always on and not glowing like my phone. That's why I bought Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar instead.

So my choice between the Fenix 7 and Epix is related to 3 things: battery life, watch size (51mm only), and no solar charge ability. The main thing for me was the fact that the 47mm Fenix 7 fitted my wrist size. Same price for both.

I minimized the time that the screen is on in settings. I made it gesture mode during activities, and normally the screen is off. Also I set the sleap mode.. That resulted in 14 days between charges. I exercise 4 days per week about 1 hour or more.

I was wondering how the battery life would last with navigation on? Would you say it could last around 30 hours if I occasionally check maps for navigation and swipe away from that data screen to avoid constant refreshing? Also with other battery saving tactics like dimming the screen, gesture to wake, etc…? Thank you for any feedback! No one is really talking about battery life while navigating

Great video Dave. I bit the bullet 3 weeks ago on the non sapphire epix (sapphire not in Canada yet) and am getting the exact same battery life results as you describe. I’ve switched from being an AW user for 6 years because of battery life and wanting to be in one ecosystem as I have Garmin Edge bike computers. However I’m a klutz with this watch! I’m always banging it into things & remember a few years ago you did a video about switching to a Felix 6S - I have the same size wrist as you and my question is … what is your daily driver Garmin now? A Felix 7S perhaps? I’m thinking of switching to the F7S. Thanks

The size takes some getting used to for sure! Lately I've been wearing the Epix most days but also the Tactix 7. I swap them out often for the sake of this channel lol.

Wow 😮 I have gesture and sleep modes on. I typically do a 1 hour walk with GPS each day. I'm only getting 4-5 days from a full charge. I am using the 'Data lover' watch face but this is the one I had on my Fenix6Pro with no battery issues. I don't use it for music on my walks. My 4-5 days sounds dreadful.

Have you heard about a epix smaller like a fenix 7s? I tried the garmin epix 2 and I really loved it but had the return it because the watch is really too big for my wrist.

Nope, but I wouldn't be surprised if we see something like that down the road. Have you checked out the Venu 2? It's similar to the Epix display but in a smaller form factor. Less expensive, and missing a lot of the training tools but otherwise it's a great watch!

During your runs, did you also use bluetooth for music playback on your watch? At the beginning of the video you are wearing earpods during your run. I am asking this because music playback via bluetooth has a major impact on battery life. Thanks.

It has even more impact than on any Apple Watch. I only get 8h with running. Minimal GPS settings. You have to turn off oxygen measurements to. And the always on display. Man. The battery life is really NOT great

Impressive, I get less with Fenix 7 (although I always go outdoors. And I actually cancelled Epic order and switched to Fenix. Would be great if you can plan screen burn-in test after 2 years (if you keep it that long).

I have read that this new amoled is not the same as older oled’s of garmin whatches so it won’t burn, they changed the technology of the first oleds that used to burn. I think it was on reddit i saw that. A guy mailed garmin and they mailed him back with this info

Does the watches alarm work when not connected to the phone like a standalone watch

Hey, thank you for the videos. I am struggling about buying the Epix2 or the Fenix7X. battery is not the issue, but the screen size 1.3" vs 1.4". from your experience, does it matter? specially when using the maps to view a trail run route during the run.

The larger screen on the Fenix 7X is nice but the OLED display on the Epix has higher resolution so it can fit more on a smaller display.

The estimated battery life always shrinks rapidly after multiple long runs. The psychology of seeing “5 days” then “2 days” after a 2-3 hour long run bums me out. However, the screen is phenomenal. Thus I continue to enjoy this beast.

It's more scratch resistant than the standard finish but it's not scratch proof.

@@ChaseTheSummit It also depends if you have the standard Fenix 7 for $699. The Epix 2 is also available in sapphire and has a titanium body as opposed to the standard Fenix 7 (besides the better screen). You have to get a $899 sapphire solar Fenix 7 to compare the Epix 2. Then the decision is for $100 more if you want a better screen on the Epix or longer battery life on the Fenix 7 sapphire with solar for $100 less. That is a hard decision.

With the Epix 2 I just got to 8 days with Gesture mode, 1.5 to 2 hrs of indoor and GPS activities per day. I did have to keep baby sitting it by reducing the screen brightness, and using GPS Only mode. Returned it and got the fenix 7X instead and getting 2 weeks of battery life without having to baby sit it, happy with the f7X choice.

Hi Andrew, I moved from a Fenix 5 plus sapphire black to the epix sapphire black. Huge step up in functionality and processor, not to mention the screen, 13 iso 12 inch and amoled. Will be similar for you although design wise it is smaller than your 5x

Do you have a reference for a maximum battery time in GPS only mode, OHR on - a typical setting for a long ultra ? How long the battery would last in that case ?

42 hours if you're using gesture mode. You can increase these a bit by turning down your backlight / timeout settings or disabling the OHR sensor.

This is AMAZING!! -I always run with music on and use my Apple Watch series 4 for it but I want to switch to Garmin for the battery. How long does the battery last for WITH music playing + factory settings set to watch mode display and NOT always on?

My Fenix 3 HR lasted a month but took at least 4 hours to charge. So long I would charge it over night. The epix 2 takes 1 hour a week so I charge it when I awake while I shower and have breakfast. For me same charge time as my old watch.

Chase, you mentioned music so I was wondering if you had any connectivity issue (breaking Bluetooth connection) between the Epix and ur head/earphones? Also, do u use iOS or Android when paired with your phone?

I'm primarily an IOS user. In terms of earbuds it seems like some work great and others have issues. As an example, I haven't really had issues with my Jaybird Vista 1 or 2's but I've read comments of people having drops with the same earbuds.

I have an Epix 2. I got some Jabra Elite 75T and they took a long time to connect and cut out intermitentently when running outdoors (when my body is between the watch and right ear piece, which is the main receiver) that's quite a common problem apparently - can be solved by wearing the watch on your right wrist if that suits you. However, I just got some Bose quietcomfort ear buds and they work perfectly with the Epix - connection is MUCH faster and they don't cut out at all whilst running outdoors. They aren't the sports version but they're very comfortable and very secure. I can't imagine they'd ever fall out. Hope that helps. (I'm on ios but just use the watch paired to the earbuds for music)

@@AbyArakkal Hi, 6-7 days with always on was with nothing else attached (no music, no chest strap). I did some (gps tracked) exercise every day (maybe 40 minutes avg) and probably messing about with the watch a fair bit which would have used a bit more power as it was new and I was playing with watch faces, maps etc. Streaming music to bluetooth ear buds definitely uses a lot of power but if you're just doing that when exercising I don't think you'd find it too bad. Maybe 4-5 days? Next time I do a solo run I'll stick some music on and try to check exactly how much power it uses. I have a chest strap from my old watch but haven't tried it with the Epix, since the wrist HR seems to work really well for me - not completely perfect but good enough for my needs (very happy about that!) For GPS it's on the default, which is the multi / everything setting I think. There are a lot of options for different ways of saving power, though. You could make 2 different run settings, 1 which used everything and 1 which used only GPS, turned the screen off etc. It's pretty well thought out on this front. My only concern at all with the watch / battery is how charge cycles affect lifespan. The battery is great now but in a few years, when the battery has done many charge cycles and needs replacing are Garmin going to change the battery for a reasonable fee? Or will they price the change so high that these watches go into landfill?

Yes, you can pair multiple watches to the same Garmin Connect account. After that they will work collaboratively depending which one you wear.

Worth mentioning (pedant style), there isn't a "backlight" with an OLED - each pixel is self illuminated. Great video though, the Epix is my perfect 'Fenix'!

For the most part yes. But battery life on the Epix is can fluctuate SO much depending on how its set up.

Should I buy epix 2 or should I wait for the epix 3 ??

I’ve only had mine for a few days but after 1 day use with always on turned off, sleep mode at night, wifi off, no workouts, it was already down to 70%. Still playing around to get the best battery life out of it but not sure how this will get close to 6 days without charging especially once I start to use it for my runs and strength workouts.

You may need a few charge cycles to see the battery stats stabilize.

as someone who is training for my 1st 50 mile ultra, would you choose the epix2 or fenix 7. i currently have the fenix 5 x plus.

Both should easily get you through a 50 miler. I guess the question is do you plan on ever shooting for 100 miles or longer? At that point you're starting to push the limits of the battery life on the Epix unless you disable heart rate or tweak the settings where as the Fenix 7 should easily make it to the finish line. On the other hand, for the 99% of the time you're not racing the Epix display is much nicer to look at. Other than that... They're basically the same watch.

@@ChaseTheSummit thanks for the quick reply. Yeah the screen has been the only drawback from my 5. Might wait for the next tactix version to see what they might offer. Besides running I also hunt in the backcountry so 7 still more viable I think in that area. None of my local stores have either to look at which sucks. I’m in no rush yet so waiting for market to catch up with supply.. thanks again

I want an always OFF display... No gesture, no nothing until I press a button or double tap the screen....does it have any of that? I don't like it to bright on my hand at involuntary moves

You can do that with the Epix and it will save a ton of battery life as well.

As mentioned the watch was set to default settings so SpO2 was disabled and only updated if I manually took a measurement.

I'm having an issue with my epix gen 2 and my training peaks account, it's recording my tss score extremely high, its saying my 2.5k hill warmup had a TSS of 200!? Anyone know how to fix this

I sended my Epix back and got the 7 Solar Titan/Sapphire. I have an AW Series 7 if i want a real good display for lifestyle.

@@ChaseTheSummit The idea of having to manage the battery was decisive for me. I like to look at my watch from the corner of my eye during the day to know the time, so the screen should be constantly turned on. With the oximeter for the night and always-On i arrived at four days of battery. This is not the idea I have of a sports watch. As mentioned, I have an Apple Watch 7 Series if I want a really fluid screen for everyday life.

@@ChiocciMicaele I use my epic in AOD... 4-5 days because I have heavy amount of notifications with running about 45-60 minutes a day. Charges in pretty quickly. What kind of usuage are you doing on your watch?

It depends, the 945 has better battery life. The Fenix 7s has more features and a smaller form factor along with more accurate GPS and heart rate sensors. What do you value more?

the very last thing I'm worried about in my epix2 is battery life. I did even delete this plugin as it doesn't support touch screen and swipes.

It's certainly not a concern once you own one. But, I made this video because it seems like a lot of people are scared away by the battery specs!

Was pulse ox on? Also, does it need to be on to use sleep tracking?

Default settings so PulseOx was disabled.

Do you have any regrets not getting the the fenix 7 or are you still happy with the epix.

I personally have both the Epix and Fenix 7. I'd say you can't really go wrong either way. Both have their pro's and cons and they're basically the same watch at the end of the day. One gets a nicer display, one gets slightly better battery life in most situations. The choice is yours!

How about notifications? Did you ditch them on purpose? Just curious.

Notifications were turned on. As mentioned in the video this was using default settings with the exception of gesture mode. Hope that helps!

@@ChaseTheSummit Yeah, my bad. You said out of the box. My Fenix 7 sapphire solar hardly does 14 days with similar use and some notifications. Kinda weird but still testing.

I only leave mine with heart rate on, gesture display, no notifications, no connections (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi)! I can't even spend 24 hours with him. Could there be a problem or is it normal?

Thankd for the video! Soooo there really is not a good reason to chose the Fenix 7 over the epix... Except... I can't stand a watch with a black face most of the time, and shining own light the rest of the time... Just looks unnatural to me... Guess I'm getting old, with my taste 😂

Well the Fenix 7X still has considerably longer battery life in both GPS and standby mode but for most the Epix is probably good enough. AMOLED is personal preference... it's not for everyone!

I dont care if you have to charge it after 3 days this watch is a beauty 😁its like people cant be arsed to take the watch off to charge these days

I didn't turn off all of the external sensors.

The Epix does not have a backlight. Also, unless there has been a change from the Fenix 6, you should be able to take screenshots by assigning a button or combination of buttons to that function in System > Hot Keys. Then again I guess it's simpler to snap a pic with a phone 🤷🏻‍♂

How many hours of GPS total was used during this single charge?

I ran between 30 minutes to 1 hour a day during the 15 days of use. Looking at my strava it was 9 days outside with GPS and 6 days on the treadmill.

If you're not spending weeks out in the wilderness, why do you even need a 30 day battery life? For any normal person it's easy, take off your watch during your shower and plug it in! lol Unlimited battery life right there.

Does this watch record sleep? If not, what’s the point of sleeping with the watch on your wrist?

15 days battery go is good to go , with Amoled screen

This is still in my Wish List...price still too much...in the mean time, I'm training with Huawei GT Runner...spec wise quite similar with the Epix2. Re: Epix2 real life battery life...that's really impressive!!!

@@ChaseTheSummit loving it so far, been 2 weeks now. Tailored more towards road running, it's very light, battery life is acceptable, love the interactive watch faces, accurate HR, accurately tracks sleep and naps, and trying out the AI coach soon.

This is off the topic of the video, but I was wondering if it is possible to edit the activity data screens of the Epix Gen 2 and the Fenix 7 via the Garmin Connect web portal? I know that you can through the phone app, but I was just curious because it would be nice to look at on a desktop. Thanks!

They're the same watch just with different displays and battery life specs. Epix is OLED, Fenix is MIP.

Could be, the Fenix 5 is an older watch so the battery is likely degraded a bit since it was new. Try turning down your backlight setting and timeout.

It depends. If you want more of a sports watch and less of a smartwatch along with WAY longer battery life the Epix 2 is worth it. On the other hand the Apple Watch is still a better smartwatch for daily use. Really depends on your use case.

Hmm..this got me thinking: can I improve battery life by connecting an external HR sensor? Except from yoga, it will disable onboard HR measures, so that saves battery, but the ANT+ connection drains a bit...somebody actually tested this?

The strange thing about Garmin's is that even with an external HR sensor paired the watch still pulses the LED's on the internal HR sensor (but doesn't use the data). So there's really not a HUGE leap in terms of battery life. However, if you actually go into your settings and DISABLE the built in OHR sensor you should see a significant bump.

@@ChaseTheSummit Nope, I checked accidentally, that's why I asked. So I was doing a bicycle ride with the Fenix 7s and a Kalenji HRB 500 arm band was connected to it via ANT+ and after I finished the ride and saved the activity, the HR on the watch showed nothing for 10-15 seconds. As if it was shut off completely. So I started another ride and raised the sensor a bit from my wrist and noticed that no light was coming out at all. Okay, let's look at while running: same thing. Strength exercise? Same. Yoga? okay, yoga uses the built in sensor, but maybe because of the breathing...or it is a bug :) Okay-okay, maybe this is only for the Fenix 7 series. I have a Venu SQ (And now a Forerunner 745, because I had to send back the Fenix 7s because of the weight and thickness) and it is the same on them!

Any fr955 news?
