So true, it was a very smart show but unfortunately Disney and many other cartoon shows are running gags and simple plots these days. There are exceptions but they're far few and between these days.

25 years ago, animation and fiction ruled. It was a time of awesomeness, it was a world of imagination, it was the age of Gargoyles. Stone by day, warriors by night. We were betrayed by the Goliath Chronicles we had sworn to make. Frozen in stone by a business deal for decades. Now here in comics....the spell is broken! AND WE LIVE AGAIN!! Also, in Young Justice: Targets Issue 2, there is a cameo of the Gargoyles of Notre Dame. Although those are DC's versions of the Gargoyles that Weisman and Jones created for a Captain Atom comic, NOT the Disney ones.

We've reached the point in time where the 90s are making a comeback, what a great time to be alive. I have fond memories of Gargoyles as it was one of the few animated shows my mother would watch with me, along with BTAS and JL/JLU, and it's cool that Greg Weisman is getting a chance to continue the story on his terms.

I'd say it really isn't the best time to be alive, since the 90s already happened, and today we don't have the kind of brilliant animated shows or Disney renaissance like we did then. That said things like this comic series, puss in boots the last wish, and the castlevania series were welcome breaks.

Lucky. I couldn't watch any of these with my mom. She was afraid that I would start beating kids up if I watched stuff like Power Rangers and for a time, she even tried controlling what I watched. She even tried to force me to watch PBS Kids because I was watching Sailor Moon and Sailor Mars called a monster "slimeface." I was 11 and in the 4th grade at the time.

This show was awesome for a very specific reason: complex villains. All the characters were good to great, but the villains, simply outstanding.

Used to enjoy this show so much back in the 90s. Love to see it coming back.

I'm from Latin America. You can tell a show's dialogues are well written when dubbing actors won't do the usual cartooney voices but really perform. In time I got to hear the original cast and I consider both versions in the same level.

This show is so good wish more people knew what I'm talking about when I mention it

If Gargoyles & X-Men can both get a new season decades latter, I can continue to hold my breath for a 4th season of ReBoot.

That was supposed to be in the season 3 of the tv show, but they rejected it. One of the worst sins the Disney execs did.

Best thing Disney ever made, hands down. The interweaving of lore from so many sources fed into my obsession with myths and legends even today. As for Goliath Chronicles... it wasn't terrible. Very heavy handed allegory for racism with guys in hoods being intolerant but it felt different, and not just the animation. I'll be looking up these comics asap.

Gargoyles is definitely worth watching. Especially due to the big names that voiced different characters. Tim Curry for example voiced a character in the show

Greg Weisman has been the show-runner for 3 cartoons that were cancelled/ended too soon - Gargoyles, Young Justice, and Spectacular Spider-Man. With each one he has said that he still has notebooks full of plans for future seasons that were never made. When fans have asked him to tell them what he would have done in hypothetical future seasons he's always refused, saying "You never know". That infuriated fans for years, but then Young Justice came back with new episodes, and now Gargoyles is coming back (in comic form). So maybe he made the right decision keeping his plans for those series secret?

The "Shadowy Boss" happens to be Thailog, an evil clone of Goliath and current Illuminati member IIRC. Also, holy crap, I actually do have a physical copy of that comic with the printing error! I wonder how much it could be worth.

Fun fact about the 2010s Joe Books stuff: according to artist Christopher Jones, it was originally meant to be a comic revival like the one Darkwing Duck had, but Disney got cold feet and wanted to do a Cinestory retelling first. They did have Jones create a new cover before canceling the project altogether.

Eliza with the ripped Belle (beauty and the beast) dress awakened something in this boy.

One of my favorite shows. I need to get around to rewatching it. There is a lot of nuance with the antagonists. Characters like Xanatos, Fox, and MacBeth being multidimensional. The comic has been pretty good so far.

I absolutely loved gargoyles when I was growing up, I used to stay up all night to watch it and even now that it's coming back in comic book form can't wait to read it 🥰

I may not have watched Gargoyles growing up (being born in 2004 sucks if you wanted to watch awesome shows), but I am excited for the fanbase that is excited. Hell, the show has a TROPE named after itself, the Xanatos Gambit. THAT IS RARE AS HELL. Also I loved the joke in the Ducktales 2017 Series Finale where Keith David quoted himself from Gargoyles, saying (and I quote) “I LIVE AGAIN… again.” I was so PISSED when Disney TVA (Television Animation) cancelled it FOR NO REASON. It was popular, it had a massive fanbase and excitement, and they got DAVID FREAKING TENNANT TO PLAY SCROOGE. WTF?

There apparently were plans to make one not long ago, although it would have changed the story massively (with the gargoyles being ancient human warriors turned into monsters by a curse and hunting the guy who cursed them in modern times). I'd prefer if they used the cartoon series as backstory and had the film take advantage of the longer runtime to tell a new big story.

*screeches in gargoyle nostalgia* I'm so excited for this to be getting a revamp. Definitely recommend this franchise to those who love fantasy, mythical and even science fiction stories. This franchise definitely got it right with all three and even sprinkling some historical literature/art gems in it. Also being down bad for Goliath was a plus lol

Man, I was super into Gargoyles when I was a kid. It was the first show I ever saw with a character that had a name like my name and was pronounced the same (and the same initials) and that was just the most awesome thing in the whole world to tiny me. Didn't hurt that the show was also really good. Went back and rewatched it recently and man it still holds up. I didn't actually know there was a comic series, so thank you for that. Definitely gonna check it out!

Now I love Gargoyles like many of my fellow Rookery Clan! I'm hoping moving forward this series does better than the previous Gargoyles comics, which were becoming scarce and hard to find! Thank you Shasha for the coverage on our favorite Angels of the Night! 🌙

There was so much that came out in the 90's. That decade was a turning point for quality cartoons. The Tick, Batman TAS, Gargoyles, Big Guy and Rusty, the X-Men, Spider-Man...

We can only hope with the Next Generation crew doing Picard. We get a sweet reboot cartoon!

I wish they did more seasons of gargoyles. I loved this show as a kid. If this happens I’m so down to watch it

I only have vague memories of Gargoyles but I remember loving the series. I’d been wanting to get back into it for some time, and it looks like this comic is the perfect opportunity. So happy to see a creative so passionate about the series and with good work under his belt. Also, Coldstone ice cream is pricey but a fantastic treat. Never been to another ice cream place like it.

Gargoyles was such an awesome show. It was ahead of it's time

Gargoyles was my go-to as a kid, coming home from school. It had the same storytelling depth as the 90's X-Men cartoon while having comic book level WTF stories and deeper exploration into different cultures. It's like Batman the Animated Series mixed with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, even to the point that they have their own signature food: Jalapeno. Also the majority of the voice actors came from Star Trek: The Next Generation and they literally put their heart and soul into their roles. They loved working on the show so much that they go to Gargoyle themed conventions to do dramatic readings of fan scripts.

For those that don’t know there is a kickstarter for gargoyles. All the comics are collect in to three volumes. There are six days left.

Gargoyles was one of the best toons ever made. The writers touched on so many things like magic, cybernetics, gene mutation, and the illuminati. In today's world there is so much of it that would draw hate and ire from the crazy left.

Fans don't particularly talk about season 3 either. And not for the "chronically online um actually" reasons. It went off the rails and ignored pretty much everything before. The writing for s1,s2 was complex, with interesting worldbuilding and actions had consequences. This was a cartoon where a character was shot, and it took...time.. to recover. They almost died, they were a main character, and it took months in story just to walk again. Also the voice acting. Oh my.

My link to Disney's Gargoyles was the long list of voice actors I was already following from the Star Trek: The Next Generation / Star Trek Voyager Universe. It gave me more of the actors I loved in a new story world.

I like the Star Trek cameos on Gargoyles and how Xanatos looked exactly like Jonathan Frakes.

Ignoring "Goliath Chronicles" is a smart move. That season was a joke. I'm going to have to check out these comics! And I highly recommend going back to watch the series. It has Shakespeare, various mythologies, and several Star Trek TNG actors doing the voice acting.

I loved this series! I'm also from the STtNG gen, so hearing all of those familiar voices was awesome.

TNG voice actors was what drew me to Gargoyles when it started and great writing plus art kept me coming back. I faded off after a bit and didn't watch any of the Chronicles through to the end if at all (no memory of them even) but it's still something I have fond memories of. I would love to have those actors reprise the roles again even if just in a one-shot movie or TV special. And if they do, maybe they'll even pull out all the stops knowing it's the last hurrah, like do a crossover with one or more shows from the time (Felix Faust and Demon of the DCAU could mix well).

Unfortunately Ed Asner who voiced Hudson died last year at age 92, so there couldn’t be a full reprisal for the series if that were to happen now. But I had been wishing for a continuation of the series for decades now, even a live action movie. But with the way that Hollywood/Disney does movies I don’t think that they would honor the original story and too many changes or differences would be made and it would ruin it for all of the old fans.

Oh good LAWD that smooth Keith David voice was ideal to open this video. Ah, memories.

As soon as I saw the title to this video, I couldn't click it fast enough!!! I watched Season 1 and most of Season 2 when it first came out. Then, when I got Disney Plus, I binged all three seasons over the span of a few weeks. Season 3, while it sucked overall compared to the first two, did have a good theme and two episodes that really stood out in terms of racial tolerance and the criminal justice system (watching it during 2021 knowing that it was from the 90s made it hit harder). DEFINITELY, go back and watch the rest of the episodes. They are a definite blast!!

94 was a rough year for me, and I have to say, one of the best things about that year, one of the set of pleasant memories I have of that year, is and was Gargoyles.

I watched this show when I was very young, and I don't recall ever doing a rewatch as I got older... But every name you mentioned, Coldstone, Coldfire, Talon, etc, I remember each of these characters vividly! So I definitely need to check this comic series out!

But I want a cartoon series! Not another comic book! *sighs* I'll still buy it though...

I vaguely remember reading '06 SLG comic and pleasantly surprise its getting a "season 4" run through again in comic format...It totally a fun and engaging franchise w/ a great voice workwork from Keith David & a strange amount Star Trek Alums such as Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Marina Sirtis, Michael Dorn, & Kate Mulgrew

I've seen a few of the Gargoyle cartoon episodes back in the day, but I didn't know where each episode was in the season timeline. The heaviest nostalgia for me is in the video game on the Sega Genesis. In fact, now that I think about it, I think I'll watch a speedrun.

I loved them, when I was a child, I love them now as an adult. Too bad it won't be on TV or Disney+ as well. I would be delighted if we could continue to build on this.

I absolutely loved Gargoyles. It was a great series both for being something that Disney was willing to take a risk with, and also for it being as different from everything else they had out at that time as it was.

Came back to thank this video for giving me the push I needed to finally watch this classic. What an amazing show, and amazing characters. Can't wait to continue their story with Vols. 3 and 4 on the printed page.

Big fan of thr tv show! Loved watching it as a kid, I have rewatched it twice on Dinsey+, the last time was last year, actually. Great review, also!! I look forward to diving into the comics and supporting them so that we can learn more of the stories they had planned! You could always feel there was WAY more going on in the background than they wanted you to realize. There wrre several reveals throughout the show that made rewatches have a whole new perspective of characters and their motivations for certain actions. Just really great story telling, and I am anxious to bask in more of it!!

So glad you made this video! I loooooooooove Gargoyles! I also didn't have the Disney channel growing up but luckily it played on Fox back in the day (90's). I also rewatched the entire series (except season 3 lol) just a couple of months ago. Yes, you're right about it going wild, but in a great way! The Coldstone story arc is fantastic and heartbreaking at the same time. Come to think of it, that was most of the story arcs, lol. I'm definitely going to give this a read but I imagine that the first issue will be a slog for me to get through as all those plot lines are very fresh in my head and I don't need the narration to bring me up to speed. That being said, the art looks fantastic so I'm sure I'll still really enjoy it! p.s. There were numerous star trek actors doing voice work for the show and they all did a terrific job!

Gargoyles came out when I was in my teens I think, I’d loved BTAS so I now get why I enjoyed it but I admit I’m merely a casual fan, being a teen and all meant teen angst etc so I didn’t have as much time to see every episode and it was difficult to follow due to that but the comic and the fact it’s on Disney + has made me dive back in and made me want more.

Loved Gargoyles back in the day but couldn't get into season 3 mainly cause ABC kept moving it around so I'd find an episode but then the next week it wouldn't be on. It's because of this show that I gained an interest in Shakespeare, namely Macbeth and A Midsummer night's Dream

This was a really good review. I had no idea about the season for potential or the comics. I am at 90th baby so I definitely watch it as a kid growing up.

Well DONE!!! I was a fan of Gargoyles for the first Episode before it was on Disney Channel! I found the movie at my local video rental store and then several months later it showed up on Disney Afternoon. I watched the show religiously and absolutely LOVED IT! The first season was amazing, and the Second season was so AWESOME! So much reference to Shakespear's works and the myth and legends of so many cultures! Your analysis touched on all the great parts. I actually was so bummed that the show ended and the disaster of the final season, though episodes 1 and 2 of Goliath Chronicles were not bad. I actually missed the show so much I started writing a fan fiction that tied Gargoyles to the Dungeons and Dragons TV show just so I could do something with my fandom. Specifically tieing in the relationship between Alex and Lexington as a focal point. I missed the original comic book runs, but I got to read them online and I loved the stories. I look forward to when Dynamite brings those back. I've already purchased issue 3 of the new series and I'm reading them again now. Such a great series and I can't wait to see where it goes.

Gargoyles is hands down the best animated series with the greatest voice talent and yes Keith David was brilliant as Goliath and actually scary and sympathetic!

I am so happy we get another series. I didn’t care for issue 1, but issue 2 was a lot better. Cannot wait to see what’s next.

I grew up watching Gargoyles, though as I live in Canada, I didn't watch it on The Disney Afternoon. Instead, I watched it on BBS Master Control, a children's programming block on Saturday mornings on a network called CTV. It was one of my favourite shows at the time. I also read the original SLG comics from the late 2000s, including the Bad Guys series, but that was all in trade which I borrowed from the library around the time I was getting back into comics in the late 2000s. So when I was at the comic book store back in December, I picked up the first issue and enjoyed it.

Loved Gargoyles as a kid, Fantasy and Sci-Fi blended together with a bit of crime drama, it was such a great series with wonderful characters that were all interesting in their own ways that grew and developed. Bad guys had reasons beyond just being bad and could be redeemed, good guys being forced to make tough decisions and dealing with the consequences. Just awesome.

I watched Gargoyles back when it was airing on TV. Wasn't into too many shows, but that was one I loved. Recently I caught up on some shows on various streaming platforms and was trying to find something new to get into. Then Gargoyles popped up in my recommended on Disney+, so I've been rewatching it. Currently on episode 30-something on season 2. I'll be keeping an eye out for the comics when I attend Fan Expo Boston in August.

I grew up watching Gargoyles (in Spanish dub even back then) and did a rewatch when it came to Disney+, so I love this franchise and I am glad that we are getting more (this and NECA releasing a line of Gargoyles figures). I will have to pick series up as those are really cool stuff from the show and even the small references (Katana being from the Japanese clan or the clones hanging out with Derek).

I'm a huge Batman fan, and this was the one series that rivaled it -- and often surpassed it! It was freakin' amazing. The backstory, so simple at first, which then grew, expanded, and twisted into a fantastically deep, rich world! Drama and comedy brought together so seamlessly. And then... The Goliath Chronicles. Ugh. True Gargoyles fans don't talk about that... thing. If I were still able to afford comics these days, I'd be tempted to get this series, but only for the writing. The art you showed from the book doesn't compare to that of the series.

I remember seeing a couple of the comics at this one comic shop I was at yesterday. Maybe one day I'll go back and buy some or just from Amazon.

Yesssss! I am a HUGE fan of the animated series, but I have not read any of the other comic series despite being, also, a religiously devoted comic book fan (at least, once upon a time.). I did, however, purchase the new first issue and enjoyed it. It evoked the feeling of the animated series and I hope we get a good long run from it. It will look really good with my NECA Gargoyles figures. I couldn't help but notice that you have a Starman omnibus on the shelf behind you.
