14 Moments That Prove "Gargoyles" Was Highly Underrated

Фильм және анимация

Humans will always fear what they don't understand.
Welcome to Next of Ken, and in this episode, we're counting down 14 Moments That Prove "Gargoyles" Was Highly Underrated. Moody yet insightful, the Disney cartoon, "Gargoyles," was criminally underrated and plagued by production issues since the beginning including a lawsuit by artist Joe Tomasini. The show was ultimately canceled due to low ratings, but the show lives on in the hearts of a small cult of fans who acknowledged the sheer brilliance of a show that was far beyond its time.

I've loved Gargoyles since it came out. It dealt with serious issues while NOT talking down to its audience. Xanatos was a fantastic antagonist. He was competent and ruthless. Even when he lost, it was a mere setback than an actual loss. And Eliza and the Gargoyles were great heroes who made mistakes but still tries their bests. I was hooked and could not get enough.

There where a few good shows right around that time. a few years before or after. I remember "Conan the Adventurer" pretty fondly and by the last few episodes there where a lot of emotional moments. A bit less serious with only a few good episodes (overall) was "King Arthur and the Knight of Justice" if you get past the "Wtf" moment from the first few episodes it's not bad. If you're into anime, Inuyasha came out around the early 2000's in English but was a show of the nineties as well. Althought it drags a lot from episode 100-onward, it has a few really good episodes as well. That said, nothing really beats Gargoyles. Reboot's websurfing season was top notch, so was Beasties(beast wars) and "Shadow Raiders" (War planets). I remember all these shows fondly. Tho Gargoyles is easily number 1.

While I agree that Gargoyles is a phenomenal and sorely-overlooked show, I don't know if you fully showcased its true strengths: that of character arcs, some spanning centuries; it's ability to competently and effectively interweave those character arcs, with clear and believable cause-and effect; the writers talent at taking seemingly dead-end plot threads or throwaway moments, and making them integral or even vital points in the story; and of course the visible continuity of magical props, making almost excessive use of the "Chekov's Gun" principle. These moments you showed, while poignant or badass, didn't really illustrate how groundbreaking the production was.

another favorite moment of mine is magus's death. after taking care of the gargoyle hatchlings for 1000 years, rasing them, loving them, being a father figure to them he still felt that guilt from his mistake way back. until he layed on his death bed where goliath said he owed him a debt to wich magus responded: but i cursed your clan. i loved how goliath shuck his head as a way of saying: that's all in the past. you've redeemed yourself. while he said outloud: you saved my children. where magus finally let go of his guilt. i just love how this show explores redemption.

When this show does redemption, it does it really fucking well. That episode where the traitor guy and the guy he died with being ghosts and fucking with Goliath, trying to take his life force to bring them both back is another example. The traitor then heel turned and my god the line he said in response to the other guy being pissed got me good. "No, I wasn't mad at him. I was mad at MYSELF!" And then moving on after reversing the effects, letting Goliath live, and apologizing for what happened...ough, I love it.

Overall it was done in an even handed manner, aside from the ‘it just went off’ BS, firearms don’t ‘just go off’, the trigger has to be pulled for the gun to fire, Broadway pulled the trigger, he is at fault for that, but Eliza is equally at fault for not properly securing her handgun when she’s not carrying.

People throw the term underrated around a little too easily. Just because something is not overrated, does not mean it's automatically underrated. BUT FOUR moments I am SHOCKED are not on this list; A) When Goliath and Elisa meet on a rooftop the second time and Hudson tags along (same scene he gets his new name) and watches them unknowingly flirt with one another and they look back at Hudson and Hudson is giving them *THE* SASSIEST "Bitch Please" look. LMFAO! B) (I am SHOCKED this wasn't #1) When Elisa falls off the castle the first time and Goliath saves her- AND then choses to save her AGAIN when she AND Demona fall the second time off the castle and Goliath saves Elisa, not Demona. Finally C) (a moment I have heard NUMEROUS times where fans first KNEW this show was "SOMETHING SPECIAL"- Scotland, 1994. Xanatos goes into the ruins of Castle Wyvern and tells Owen to get the excavation started ASAP and Owen says no one will help because locals think it's haunted..."You know the answer to that, Owen. Pay a man well enough, and he'll walk BAREFOOT into Hell...". The moment little kids heard a Disney cartoon say a "swear word" like "Hell" lol they KNEW this show was THE SHIT :D Oh and D) When Puck gives Demona what she wants and lets her feel the warmth of the Sun for the first time...as a human :D

I love how the show took a more mature view of tropes common in animation of the day. For example, on the trope that male-targeted animation would always use "laser guns" rather than those that fired bullets: Elisa: "What was in those crates?" Xanatos: "The latest in non-projectile particle beam technology" Elisa: "Non-projectile? You mean like lasers?!" Xanatos: "Actually, the laser is just framing. The particle beam itself is invisible."

ok you cannot understand this but i'll try: in Italy Garlgoyles is of course dubbed, and dubbet EXTREMELY well! The cast of voices is amazing to say the least and they fit like gloves: Goliath is Alessandro Rossi, the "deep voice" of Neeson, Arnold, and Samuel L Jackson among others, Hudson is Sandro Iovino ( from Ritger hauer in blade runner to mr Burns) Brodway is Massimo de Ambrosis ( Owen Wilson, Edward Norton, Steve Carrel) Brroklyn is Marco Mete ( Robin Williams, Kevin Bacon, Bruce Willis) Xanathos is Nino Prester ( Eugene levy, Stanley Tucci, Oliver Platt). Demona is the Amazing Emanuela Rossi ( Michelle Peiffer, Emma Thompson, Cate Blanchett, Robin Wright). And I could go on. The level of dubbing on this show is like the castle, over the clouds. Funny aneddoct, all the spells of the series are actually trasnlated into latin ( most of the HP spells are latin too) language, and correctly translated. In Italy we study latin up to 5 yrs in high school so that is a nice touch. Dialogue is adapted by the great Anna Rita Pasanisi, voice of Susan Sarandon. I meam is indescribable how good is this series.

@@Matkaizer08No, that's a distraction from real issues. Capitalism demands high profit and low production. Why spend money on good writers, animators, and voice acting when mediocre sells just as well? As consumers, we should stop paying them for mediocrity and demand quality.

I vaguely remember this stuff from my childhood. Wanna watch all of it now. Looks better than a lot of current fantasy trope stuff.
