@@andrewmurphy6833 Kyle Walker has worked with Pep Guardiola for 8 years and still has League 2 level ability on the ball at times. Saka can be easily nullified because the left back always knows that Walker on the overlap is pointless as his delivery is so bad. Time to phase out the sprinter and give Trent his long overdue staring shirt at right back. Imagine being a defender and having to figure out if you’re going to let Saka cut in on his left foot or have Trent on the outside whipping one in the box. Nightmare scenario.

I have many criticisms of Southgate, but it's a clear fact that he's a great manager who lifted England out of a real low point up to the high standard that we ought to be performing at. Overall we did well this tournament, but could definitely have achieved more with the talent we have. If Southgate is sacked or resigns, I hope he stays as an assistant coach or something like that, as he's loved by the team and would have a great deal to offer still. But if he stays on as manager, I wouldn't be unhappy with that. Really I think the English media and many England fans deserve a lot of blame for England's many decades of disappointment. The England fans in Germany seem to have been great overall, but the fact so many people think it's our God-given right to win finals and are baying for blood when we don't perhaps suggests we don't deserve Southgate and our excellent players.

Just admit it, the times they won matches were purely lucky moments. Dont celebrate mediocrity. Dont praise losers. England didnt get to the final due to being skillful or a well managed top team, it was just rare moments of opportunity. Same in the previous Euros, a certain captain kicked a penalty up and over (rugby style) ....what utter rubbish! And then there's the whole wifes and girfriends issue. Arriving from day one like they are celebrities and winners, when theyve not won anything since 1966. Save the parading around the stadiums with wags until you've actually won something! You can’t claim ‘the physical toll’ when you have a world class bench to elevate this. It’s a luxury England teams of the past never had. Physicality wasn’t the issue, rather tactility was the issue.

Won 1 game in the worst group, check. Losing in 90 minutes to Slovenia and saved by an overhead kick by Jude Bellingham in the last minute, check. Losing to denmark, saved by a late equaliser and penalties, check. Late winner v Netherlands in a game they were getting dominated in, check. Absolutely dominated by Spain where the goalkeeper was man of the match and with better finishing could have lost 5-1, check. The most incompetent of all managers could have achieved all of that.

I think ultimately it comes down to Spain playing in attacking mode and England playing in defence. Regardless of what Spanish player had the ball they were running towards Englands goal, whereas England kept going back to the keeper and building up play. Problem was when it went to the keeper he would long ball it and England would lose possession

  • @abcjelly
