This effected the whole team, Southgate sacrificed the team for the sake of not hurting kanes feelings. Also its no excuse saying they were tired and played lots of games. In Spain we have a saying: "un equipo lo componen hombres y no nombres" or "a team is made out of men, not names"... this Kane obsession has to end... if there are players with the talent of Palmer or Watkins (we were so glad in Spain they did not come on until later in the game), you have got to be adventurous and start them... England won the World Cup in 1966 because Ramsey was not afraid of making controversial decisions (such as fielding Hurst over Greaves)... you have to be adventurous and daring when you are a coach in a major tournament.

I’m not defending Southgate who has failed to create any discernible pattern of play in multiple tournaments but there is no other league in Europe with the competitiveness and physical intensity of the premier league. It’s no accident that our best performances in a major tournament were in a mid season World Cup in Quatar. It’s probably made worse by the fact that we tend to value athleticism over technique so when the physical sharpness isn’t there the inferior technique is starkly obvious.

  • @Forksake82

@@ianrichards1839 you say you're not defending Southgate but proceed to give excuses for him. I don't think it's about players being more tired than lets say the Spanish. The Spanish players play as many games domestically and in Europe until the very late stages consistently winning European trophies. If we look at this tournament, England when they were behind raised their game and could argue looked physically fitter than the opposition but as soon as England were level, they sat back trying not to lose rather than use the momentum and go for the win and in my opinion that comes from the manager who is cautious. Spain were superior and won every single game due to the clear structure and superb technical ability. England limped to the final with arguably the worst football in the tournament and really Southgate should shoulder the blame and resign.

. I’m absolutely not defending Southgate. His failure in club football speaks for itself. He is the definition of mediocrity and was definitely a significant part of the problem but I’m old enough to know that England’s underperformance relative to the talent available in euro and world cups goes back way before Southgate. Every single foreign player who comes to the premier league comments on the unrivalled physical intensity and that every game is full on. At the top level even a 1% difference in sharpness matters. Do you think every problem has a single cause ? If only life was that simple.

I can’t believe Stuart Pearce is actually kind of hinting at the door for his best mate Southgate, I never thought I would see the day, Southgate out.

the thing that amazes me most is that Anthong Gordon sat on the bench the whole time, genuine pace, takes players on ,scores goals , what a waste

Gordon should have come on for Foden after the leveler. We would have had pace and aggression when needed. Another chance gone by, England will always be the bridesmaid if they don't get aggressive and control. Strongest bench in the tournament potentially yet drastically underutilized

I think we can agree that the MVP of this tournament were the buttons on Adrians shirts. The solid defense they put up against that attack up the gut and by the gut is the stuff of legends

We must be one of the worst teams around to watch so negative/ boring as the guy said 12 games very poor but somehow nicking results,we all realise the best thing for footballs sake was spain winning the tournament.

Why is no one talking about Pickford just launching the ball forward all night? Southgate said you didn't keep possession well enough. How can you keep possession with your goalkeeper just lumping it to a sole striker with no support?

The final was sacrificed to allow Kane to play, no idea what Walker was doing coming center twice and leaving his man twice and both goals come from his side.

First half just sitting back and trying to counter with no speed up front. Kane moved likeva snail. If they started with Gordon and Watkins and Saka up front then maybe. Bellingham, Rice and Palmer/ Foden midfield 3. 4-3--3 was the formation.

They made it to the final because they have talent in every position. But the tactics and coaching didn't live up to the moment. Timidity did them in. 100% Gareth

Don't forget the easy route. Netherlands was the only legitimate opponent England faced all tournament apart from Spain. If they played Germany, France, Portugal or Spain earlier in the knockout rounds they would've been eliminated.

Southgate had picked his side before a ball was even kicked . Feel sorry for the likes of Watkins, palmer and konsa because as SP just said, no matter what they did, Southgate wasn’t allowing them to stake a claim for a start. There was a team there… Southgate was unwilling to see it

@@mattkelly245 Exactly, I thought the same thing, if that was Trent leaving Williams unmarked and in acres of space like that like that, multiple times, he'd be getting crucified. MAy as well have played Trent, at least he might've produced something magical, which Walker was never going to do.

@@JCRule69 No, Luke Shaw played well to be fair. It was on Walker's side, Nico Williams in acres of space, no-one near him, scores their first goal. Just minutes later, Williams again receives the ball in loads of space and Spain nearly score again. Walker (who played on that side, not Shaw) was nowhere to be seen. Shaw actually took care of Yamal very well for most of the match, and I'm not particularly a Luke Shaw fan but can't be blaming him for Walker's shocking mistakes.
