"They added a rule where breaking a clinch gives the other guy a point. Thats what Gardner won on. He was lying on the mat doing nothing at all to challenge Karelin. Karelin lifts him up a few times, but is unable to spin him around. At some point, his hands slip up just a bit, and Gardner is awarded a point. Gardner wins.Karelin said he wasn't aware of the rule change but regardless of that he was pretty humble in defeat. That rule change was complete BS anyway. They quickly abandoned the rule in the next world championship." -reddit

When you look at the facts, Alexander wasn't aware of the rule change. So what he did, he thought was legal. Rulan used his weight to his advantage and kept from being picked up. Someone's lack of knowledge became someone's advantage. I think if the rule was know, rulan would have gotten silver.

Exactly mistakes shouldn't be treated as "Oh that's why he won" It should be treated as he exposed himself for failure against his opponent.

Mans_D AG I guess you’ve never watched the Netflix documentary “Icaris “ The head doper from Russia walks the guy thru how the Russians got passed the drug testing by replacing the dirty tests with clean ones. They’ve done this for years. The guy that exposed it all had to escape to America because the Russian govt is trying to kill him. They seized all his property even from his wife and kids. Yeah go check that out

Gardener played a great defensive match. His best asset was his superb conditioning. He knew he could not beat Karelin playing the Russians game so he wore him down and forced him to make an error. Alot of bitter comments here saying it was a cheap win because the Russian didn't know the rules but that is an excuse. You don't go to the olympics and not know the rules of your own sport. Good Job Gardener. Tough luck Karelin; still the best wrestler of all time despite losing this match fair and square.
