Thanks again for all the gardening tips. Again I am back to refresh this knowledge and fed my plants today with Epsom salt water (as you’ve directed) and also used up the last of my IV Organics 6macros+. I added it to my watering this time. For the first time, this season after I used that, my Meyer lemon cutting literally blossomed and fruited. I wasn’t sure it would ever get to that point. Plus my baby super dwarf banana plants look incredible. All are in pots in minimal sun patio where I live. Thank you for all of your help and I’m still learning! 😁

Picture this, if you will....yesterday I took delivery of 20lbs of pelleted chicken poop. It was in a plastic bucket, in a box, padded with paper. There was a hole in the box and a trail of said poop led back to the courier's van. In the other direction the trail led through my hallway, living room and kitchen....I open the box in some state of incredulity to find the bucket had been split in two and the poultry pellets were EVERYWHERE.... I tidied up but my house is still reeking like chickens butts! I bet you can imagine, with ease, the smile on my face. :)

Anyway to get a contact so I might pick your brain, I am new to greenhouse as well as yard gardening and learning everything from trial and error ( mostly error) and when I went to our college to see about taking classes, there were around 20 pages of different courses available, but being "green" I left completely confused... question example: I bought a 2 yr old Korean Ginseng on line only to find it does not look like or have even characteristics of any Ginseng I've seen on the web, I would like to know what I bought, or even if I was the victim of fraud so I might warn others. I really like your videos and by far have learned more from you than anyone else. IE; Air layering, propagation, Use of Vermiculite, Perlite and peat moss etc. Thank You, Ken/ Moab Ut.

Very interesting video. I must keep in mind, that having lived and gardened in San Diego for 38 years that due to the arid conditions there the soil is generally alkaline. While there is adequate iron in the soils there, the iron is not available to the plant unless the soil pH is brought down. The use of soil sulfur is helpful in lowering the pH since when it is mixed with water it forms a weak solution of sulfuric acid. This needs to be repeated since the soil will return to its natural pH over time because the water is also alkaline there. Another solution is a commercial product called Ironite. This releases iron chelate to the plant readily. It's significant to understand the the pH of soils in different location around the US. So it is imperative that you test your soil for its pH before trying to modify it. I now live in Indiana where the soil is slightly acid. Adding organic material in bulk to the soil, that is, enough to change the structure of it will always help buffer it while allowing air at the root zone. Excellent video Charles!

Many areas soils are too high in Mg. Tomatoes need lots of Ca. Adding more Mg can bump some of the Ca from the soil. Might be good idea to check with local extension service if this is something you need. The sulfate will help with S needs but if one applies ammonium sulfate the N will also helps in most cases and lower pH if needed.

Hello Robert Reznik, Great suggestions! However, when I feed my plants... with whatever... I always feed them so lightly as to only help supplement what may be missing while feeding the soil biology that in turn supports the healthy and productive plants. The most important ingredient is adding compost (preferably homemade) that returns all the garden and kitchen scraps back into the soil to recreate more healthy and productive plants. Thank you again for your comments! Charles :-)

I think the Epsom salt thing is just because for some reason it is considered organic fertilizer. I was calculating the amount it takes per tomato plant and 1/6 oz in a season would the removal amount and probably less if compost is used.

What kind of routine supplements and/or fertilizer application schedule would you suggest to bring them back to health. Should I up the frequency of the MgSO4 or other fertilizer applications until I see some improvement or should I just stick to the suggested frequency? Maybe half strength more often? Thanks. What I find funny is when I worked in Labor and Delivery we would give the prematurely laboring patients IV drip Magnesium Sulfate to stop or slow down their labor. Interesting.

It is crucial for photosynthesis and is in every cell of every plant and every eukaryotic species - that means you and me. Element number 25 is manganese. Sulfate is the other component of epsom salts not sulfur. Sulfate is a negative ion (SO4)^-2. Epsom salts are great to bathe in for wellness as well. Cheers and I loved the cloning video!

Tip #1 Since the ground is saturated your plant has taken on water already and might not take up any of the salts, & in fact most will just rinse through, so it is better to drip feed the water onto the plant before you turn the sprinklers on. I use 3 plastic gallon milk jugs with a pin hole in the bottom triangulated, rough up the soil so they soak down and not on the surface, & after they have slowly dripped into the soil if I think more water is needed, I can add water, but at least I know the salts are taken into the plant first Tip #2 Recipe for Tomato and Peppers Dry 2-3 dozen egg shells and pulse grind them in the blender until dust, pour into a resealable container and add 2 cups bone meal, 1/2 cup Epsom Salts and 14 or 15 crushed aspirin. I add worm castings to my mix too, and another recipe swears by adding same amount of organic sugar as the salts which supposedly changes the acidity of the tomato yielding sweeter tomatoes. This year I added 1/2 c lava dust as well. Anyway put a half cup of this at the bottom of each plant and mix well with soil before planting, potting deep as usual and top dress with a bit covering with potting compost, water in. I also top dress with chicken manure pellets, is a miracle fertilizer with lots of trace elements. You will be surprised at the difference in the plant health and yield. Tip #3 Mg is Magnesium # 12 (group 2) and not Mn #25 (group 7). It is in the red column under the shadow as you pointed to Mn #25.

Added a tablespoon of Epsom salt to one gallon of water to avoid blossom rot on my tomatoes which are planted in 5 gallon pots. I have several tomatoes, BUT several have blossom rot in each pot. I thought it might be leaching out due to watering and rain. Whats the problem?

I have a lemon tree in my backyard that I've had in the ground for 4 years but it hasn't ever produced any lemons. Would the Epson salt help the tree to produce fruit?

I liked the video i found it very informative for how you achieve that rich green color on your leaves. Could i add epsom salt to a recently fertilized potted meyer lemon? My leaves are not dark green.

Hello Jay Bones, I would space your feedings to 1x per month during the growing season... and even cutting back on the recommended amounts so that you can safely feed your plants and trees the first week of each month without risk of over doing it. So, I would just wait at least a month before adding a different feeding; the Epsom salt, for example. Keep me posted on your growing successes & Thank you for the compliment!!! Charles :-)

Magnesium is atomic number 12. It is in Group 2 in the Periodic Table and has 2 electrons in the outermost shell. Atomic number 25 is Manganese, a completely different element.

Hey Charles, that's an interesting video! I only knew that salts can harm, not help. I never thought much of Epsom salts though. Arborist told me my soil is very salinic around my redwoods. Would this leach into that soil nearby my redwoods as I know they have huge roots or could it help them as well?

Hello Andrew P., I am glad you found this video informative & thank you for writing me! :) If your soil is already too saline-- Then I could not recommend that you add epsom salt, even though epsom has micronutrients that could benefit all your plants, including the redwoods! Typically, the winter rains wash the soil and reduce the nutrients and salt levels in the soil. Then in the spring you begin to add some organic fertilizers (and epsom salt)... adding the most during the hotter summer months.... cutting down the amount you fertilize in fall... and then no fertilizing or supplements in the winter. Additionally, I have a whole home water filter that removes all the minerals in our water, both indoors and outdoors for my plants... So every time I water, their is not risk of building the wrong types of salts in my soil. :) I hope this is helpful! If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Charles
