There is a way to bury wire mesh maybe 18” wide around the border of your fence line to stop the critters digging in.

Jackson Galaxy has a great channel & a product line. I have learned a lot from him. I have a tincture solution for behavior problems & it worked on the first day. Perhaps a natural tincture could help Squeak with this syndrome.
