Garcia, Students Lead Effort to Put Mexican Repatriation into History Books

(Sacramento) - Bell Gardens Elementary School students flew 400 miles to join Assemblymember Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens) to testify in the Assembly Education Committee and help pass Assembly Bill 146. AB 146 encourages that the unconstitutional deportation of over one million U.S. citizens and lawful residents of Mexican descent in California during the 1930’s, be included in student history textbooks and studies. The students, along with their teacher Leslie Hiatt, were the winners of Garcia’s “There Ought to Be a Law” contest. “I am so glad that students from my back yard are getting hands on experience in state government and by example teaching others about the value of civic engagement no matter your age or status,” says Assemblymember Garcia.
