Garbage train meets the Coast Starlight, Seattle, 10-21-2014

This morning I'm adjacent to the BNSF mainlines in south Seattle, just north of Spokane St.
Approaching northbound on Main 1 is an empty garbage train returning from the landfill. Lead engine is BNSF 277 (SD75M). These old Warbonnet locos are common on the garbage trains. This is the ROOEVE (Roosevelt, WA to Everett, WA).
Just as she hits the Horton Street crossing, Amtrak's Coast Starlight comes flying southbound on Main 2, headed for Los Angeles. AMTK 97 (P42DC) leads with a Dash-8 loco behind. AMTK 503 is a B32-8WH. Amtrak only has 20 or so of these engines, but we see them from time to time in this area. I think this is the first time I've caught one.
Garbage:
277 / 4863
SD75M / C44-9W
Amtrak:
92 / 503
P42DC / B32-8WH

Nice catch with that Amtrak Dash-8! I might take Coast Starlight, just for the chance to ride with one..

+GrittyRailFan Yeah, I've see the Amtrak Dash-8's up here once in awhile but they're pretty rare. Just dumb luck...

I always like seeing the B32-8WH, it reminds me of when I was a kid seeing them brand new with the odd "Pepsi Can" paint scheme.

Yeah, that wasn't the prettiest of paint schemes. The current paint scheme is much cleaner, looks nice.

SeattleRailFan I liked it, I think more for the weird factor than anything else.

Hey why are the engineers stations on the left side of the engines? Really enjoy your Seattle yard views. Happy when you title locations well. I often google-map around the yard you video, Great work. Thanks

The engineer sits on the right side of the cab, the conductor on the left. That's if your facing the normal forward direction of movement. If you're looking that loco head on, then the engineers would be on your left. As for why, it's just one of those things that's been that way forever. Early steam engines had the engineer on the right for some reason and it just stuck.

Yes, there is a tunnel under the city. Google "gn tunnel seattle" to see articles about it. The mainline used to right down the waterfront. Trains were clogging up traffic, so the tunnel was built in 1904/5. North portal is below Pike Place Market, south portal is next to King Street Station See my video "Baretables at South Portal, Seattle, 1-10-2011" for a view of the south portal of the tunnel. See "CN coal at North Portal, Seattle, 3-31-2011" for a view of the north portal.

Morning Railfan. Did a Google Earth look at where you like to take your videos and noticed that the tracks seem to go underground near Pike Place Market. Can't see where they go from that point. Is there a tunnel under the city for the trains? Pete
