Garak's deception is revealed | 4K Upscale

S3 E20 "Improbable Cause" Will probably do an upscale on Trials and Tribble-ations soon. I actually have a Voyager upscale next (believe it or not lol.)

Let me know which scenes from episodes you want upscaled. Except Empok Nor lol. Settings: Iris at medium, every slider turned all the way to the left. Then I use blur to cover up the over sharpening that happens. Currently this is the only way I've found that adds as much detail as possible and looks as accurate to the 480p original without smoothing or erasing lines like Iris at low does. The drawback is that it is completely unfeasible to do for an entire episode as it takes an insane amount of time to do so unless you have many people working with you on it.

Well, thing is. DS9 was seen as a series that had time to grow and being that it was pretty much in one location. The cast of characters could be flushed out and grow. Although the other series were never truly awful, Just DS9 had some weight behind them when it came to talent. Plus, you can grow attached to them.

It really was on another level. There were such great characters - Quark, Garak, Odo, Martok.. And unlike most Trek the story and characters really advanced as the seasons went on. You got to see situations change and characters grow. Best show in the franchise.

Great acting usually came from Shatner, Nemoy, and Steward. Since many episodes allowed them to give a speech or an extended scene, their acting skills were on display. DS9 ongoing narrative allowed a more ensemble style of acting.

I love how Odo just refuses to play Garak's games. All of the humans on the station instinctively avoid confronting him when he lies, even when they know he's hiding something. Odo has never had time for such nonsense, he gets straight to the point. I don't think Garak is surprised that Odo figured out who blew up his shop. I think he's surprised that Odo cuts through all of his BS so quickly and disarms him.

Nah, he is surprised - but not about Odo finding out, about him beeing so sloppy that Odo COULD find out and the Possibility he maybe want to be "found out" on multiple Levels (pretty obvious and also fact that Garak is closet Gay). Hecalculates the risks fast and try to justificate himselfs Actions before himself by some lie to speak - to give him the alibi to further lie to himself (I had to lie because....). Odo cuts that, so Garak is only left with his own ugly truth and has to face all the Trauma from the Past at once, thus his "flight"-response walking round looking around like a hunted animal in a Cage. And then, he goes straight to the Source of all what is "him" - his Family. His Mother. Garak is about the lies - thoose we tell others and thoose we get told - but foremost, thoose we tell ourselfs. About Duty and Selfexpression conflicting, about "not fitting" and "having to lie all ones life", about a Family not accepting him for what he is.

''I'm surprised that you could come to this unlikely conclusion'' the writing for Garak's dialogue was so perfect. Everything he said was both true and a tactful, manipulative deception. He gets to act like he's surprised by Odo making some a wild accusation but he's also outright admitting that he's impressed by Odo's deductive capabilities. Only rewatching the series knowing who Garak is do you get to fully appreciate the writing. ''They were all true, especially the lies'' - Elim Garak

It's interesting how the upscaler pseudo-"removes" some of the makeup around Garak's eyes, so his skin actually looks a normal human color near the sclera. I think the model does a particularly good job on the patterns on Garak's suit. Love how it not only sharpens the pattern but makes the gold lines more vibrant. Very fitting for a character who is a skilled tailor and definitely nothing else.

You know what is also nice? Not having every scene bathed in utter darkness!!! It seems that the lighting for these shows was much brighter. Had a very hard time watching Star Trek Picard because they filmed most scenes in near darkness. What is the point of having an elaborate set when the viewer can barely see anything!!! Don't get me started on the lazy writing for today's Trek shows. At least Deep Space Nine was able to story tell in a way that was enjoyable to watch. Sigh!!!

Which makes it even more unlikely that they'll upscale it lol.

@@C0LTELL0 Not really. Whether it's 1080p or 2160p, doesn't really matter. Might be a little more work, but we're not talking like 4x more work. MAYBE 1.5 ... But the film it was originally ... filmed on has the resolution available. So why would they go with 1080 when 4K is the new standard? That's my logic. But tragically, I agree with you... You're probably right. I wish you weren't. =)

Looks like the AI had trouble with Odo's brow ridges in a few spots. Still a great job, though!

@@playloud90278Yeah AI can't do anything about that, for now. If you think that's bad, Empok Nor is absolutely brutal since it's mostly darkness.
