you should have used adjustable wrenches, wrenches 13 or 1/2 to maintain the integrity of the bolts.. good video thanks.

My chain has a spring where the chain hooks up that has recently broken. I'm thinking that spring was taking care of the tension before since the chain didn't completely fall off and the opener still works but is a bit jumpy. Now I'm wondering if that spring is needed.

I over tightened my chain because I thought it was sagging too much and ended up breaking the sprocket off... Now I plan to leave it loose enough but not too loose to where it jumps off of the new sprocket.

Looks like a 1/2inch spanner would have undone those adjusting nuts, but a vice grip will do! lol. Cheers.

I love my vise grips, even though there are always better tools to do the jobs. The vise grips are easier to find in the water when I am working on the dock and drop the tool in the water hahaha.

Just got through doing this before I watch this video. All that you are adjusting is the chain to the nut he was turning back to the gear on the Motor sticking up top. You have to take the chain off the gear. Also the chain as a gear on the top front of the garage door itself. It is more involve than just doing this. But a good video if your garage door does not open or close and only hums when you push the button on your remote or the switch on the wall.

Mine jumped the track and that heavy garage door slammed down 4 feet HARD to the ground. Good thing a small child or a pet wasnt under there. Seems Craftsman could have put a safety stop in their design.

My garage door chain jumped the sprocket . How do I put the chain back on gear??

  • @FROSTYLIFE

I used to have to put the chain back on the sprocket of the bike, and you can use a screwdriver to pull tension onto the first sprocket gear and the roll it on one gear at a time.

I wish one of these garage door chain videos would show the other side of the chain. My chain rubs against the silver bracket and I'm not sure if it's supposed to do that or not. It doesn't look normal and if I tighten it enough to go above the bracket it puts way too much tension on it.

There should be some slack in the chain for sure, but not so much that the chain drags or gets derailed. One good suggestion is to find a company that gives garage door check ups or tune ups for a low price. I pay something like $40 a year for a tune up and they check things like that.

here is a rule of thumb, if ur door is very heavy to lift by hand, then either het the springs fixed, or adjust the chain to make it loose, y? becuase u will destroy the opener

I agree, the job of the spring is to make the door weight light and not overwork the openers. Like he says here, if it seems heavy, you need a spring tune-up.

Its ok, these nice old craftsmans are easy to repair, and you can pick them up for $25 all day on craigslist. Ill take my chances, keep the chain lubed and 1 inch deflection like the manual says. I have new garage door springs and a very heavy door.
