Hi, Just BRILLIANT and well presented. I’ve always avoided this type of insurance over the last 40 yrs but having just purchased a Jaguar i-pace, many questions/suggestions have sprung up .? I think that's the key to everything shop around not just for price but for quality of cover etc too.

Cheers Jim. While watching this a question popped into my head. How would GAP insurance work when the value of your new car rises after purchase? These are crazy times where a premium is being paid to negate long lead times.

I had heard of this type of cover but to be honest I had no clue what it was about. I’ll seriously consider this next time I buy or lease a car, thank you Jim.

Interesting to hear they recommend getting the cover as soon after purchase as possible as don’t insurance companies payout the new vehicle price for cars less than a year old? Appreciate this doesn’t apply for those buying older vehicles.

Most insurance companies (around 95%)do new for old car replacement within the first year but there are usually caveats around mileage / usage etc in many policies. The mitigated risk to the Gap provider in year one of a new car's life would be factored into the premium - as you see in the video it was £147 to insurance a car for 3 years so it's not overly expensive. Gap cover just removes the element of doubt for those who want peace of mind. You need to buy it quickly as otherwise it might be purchased "after the event" if you see what I mean, making it far more open to fraud.

Interesting… it’s worth considering based on my experience of having my Escort van written off. That was a major headache, as my cash flow had tanked at the time 🙁.

I mate of mine had his car written off in the summer and had to put a few grand on top of the write off amount to basically buy the same car again.

I've never heard of this type of insurance before! Great video 🙂 It just seems ridiculous that you pay such high insurance premium to be fully insured and yet when you need to claim they can settle on a much lower value than your car is worth ? How is that even fair? Is this the case with all insurance companies?

There’s a difference between value and cost. All insurers settle on book value (unless you have an agreed value classic car policy). What someone pays retail for something is different to its intrinsic value. 👍

Good advice, I've been looking at this myself. Self employed..it's easy to Off set against tax anyway

I’m pretty sure it’s the whole amount including your deposit. Car2Cover (Tom & Elaine) will be able to give you the definitive answer!

I need to sort this for my new lease.. what I'm confused about, when they ask for car value... Do they mean the full car price? Or what the lease is going to cost me over the lease contract?? Thanks for the video.

Hi Paul, it will always mean the value of the car (as in P11D value - thats the total RRP including any extras such as metallic paint etc). You'll see in the quote I do in the video that they also ask how much my lease payments are. Hope that helps.

Just spec it up on the Kia website and it will show you the price. It should be the full RRP.

Insurance companies will be chancing their arms just now and trying to pay out as little as possible so protect their shareholders dividends. Despite the fact that second hand cars are at an all time high. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask.

In my experience after my car was stolen few years ago it’s an absolute nightmare trying to get the gap insurance company & the car insurance to sort out the finance to be refunded. I ended up doing all the work myself for both parties. Endless calls: wasted time hanging on the phone. Shocking experience

Didn’t use these. It was all organised through bmw. I’m in such a pickle. I want to get a new/used car - hybrid. I drive a Range Rover at present but want something more economical. I have no idea where to start. I’m swaying towards leasing a vehicle though

That’s a shame. Have you gone back to BMW to complain? They sold you the product so you’d be well advised to lodge a formal complaint. For the new car maybe look at what Lexus has on offer 👍

If you buy a new like I did I bought gap insurance lucky for me prices are higher when I smashed my car up the gap insurance even paid me back what was left on the gap always always consider gap insurance
