    You are spot on , I have received my renewal notice for my BMW I4 M50 and it is £852.17 with the AA, I paid £353.09 last year. Compere the Market came up with best price of £720 with Admiral who I won't use and will probably use SAGA for £762.25. I already have a Saab convertible insured with them and will ask for a discount. My insurance for a Mercedes A45 is due on the 16th November and I only paid £281.91 with L.V. last year . I will try quote zone. Thanks Alan.

    When I got our first car in March 2022 after passing my test in 11/2021 aged 53 for a £3k 2003 2.0 petrol auto Honda CR-V insurance group 28 it cost me £949 fully comp (with elephant) This year after comparing the market I got it this year for £830 with 1 year no claims with Aviva Zero (inc RAC National breakdown where it takes you home and drops your car off at designated garage anywhere in U.K.) This year has been very hectic and we racked up a lot of miles (only put down 10k on the policy) so we rung Aviva up and asked how much for an extra 2k miles and they said £13. Wow, I was half expecting a three figure sum 😂 But we’re looking at a newer car like the Lexus CT200 mainly because of the great MPG and £0 road tax, but on completing a quote it said £1,400 was the cheapest. Think I’ll try again closer to my renewal but it does seem anything like a EV or Hybrid insurance companies are banging the prices up or is it the cost of the car?

How can that ever be justified?! By some magic stroke of luck I kept checking every day and when the time came I needed to bite the bullet I got it for £1700. But i'm still at a loss as to how a 186% increase can be justified.

    Be careful with multi car policies. Be aware that usually if one of the cars is involved in a fault claim then all the cars are clobbered with a premium weighting. My wife's car was hit by a driver coming round a bend over the centre white line and they did not stop. So as annoying as it was that's a fault claim but we had a multi car policy and they loaded the premium for the policy across all the cars we had, upon renewal premium quoted. So I terminated and insured each car separately to stop this should such a circumstance occur in the future. So a multi car policy discount of 5 or 10% sounds good but can backfire.

    100% mate, it's a catch 22, people drive uninsured as they cant afford it (despite often being able to afford fags and beer etc) and that puts everyone else's car insurance up. I bet at least 10-15% of your premium is due to uninsured drivers.

    Yes, point taken - but I see no justification for insurance premiums being increased by over 50% on petrol/diesel cars in one year, other than to partly subsidize the costs to repair EVs in the event of an accident. Despite the fact my NC was supposedly "protected". I went to another insurer and went back to something in the region of what my Admiral quote had previously been. Really informative video Jim. I wonder if you have any advice for my 18 year old son. He had one “accident” which was his fault resulting in his car being written off. He subsequently got rear ended in his replacement car resulting in that being written off for, in my opinion, repairable damage (but that’s another story). This incident was not his fault (he was stopped at a red traffic light) and the other driver admitted liability and a claim was made against her insurance company. I’m concerned this non fault accident will be taken into consideration when he comes to renew which seems very unfair. Is it because insurance companies will think he’s a greater risk?

  • @DefinitelyNotAGuru

    As long as his insurers made a recovery from the third party the non-fault accident won’t go against him unfortunately the fault claim combined with his age very much will. I’d say look at telematics policies, get a group 1 car (Citroen C1/Toyota Aygo); has he done pass plus?

Incorrect, it went down by £5 a year - I think it is just the likes of JLR and Tesla that skew the information - Tesla are considerably more expensive to repair than a regular EV, and JLR are just expensive to repair even if it’s a run of the mill component. For reference I use LV - might be worth a call as the girl on the phone said ‘we are getting a lot of people thinking their renewals will be higher’

  • @davidpaterson2309

    @davidpaterson2309

    8 ай бұрын

    @@DefinitelyNotAGuruAnd that has actually increased some renewal quotes. Why? Well, unfair though it may have been, when companies were able to “inertia sell” big price increases to their least-price-sensitive (the company’s interpretation of “loyal”!) customers, it meant that they spread their overall price increase objective unevenly across their customer base. So some customers - those judged “most-price-sensitive” (most likely to switch) got a lower increase. Because they can no longer do that, their marketing people will focus more on “customer churn rate” - ie what is the impact of an overall price increase on the rate of new-customer gains vs. existing-customer losses. They will also test overall market sensitivity through research - ie it’s just a fact of life that companies know that consumers experiencing higher inflation are more likely to accept higher price increases without switching, so they will push price as far as they think they can. That’s how inflation works - price rises snowballing, wages snowballing to chase them etc.

Their customer service leaves a lot to be desired in my experience. Also, an Admiral customer reversed into my wife’s car last year. Simple claim, all recorded on dashcam, and we didn’t ask for any more than the car to be repaired. Admiral took over 6 months to settle the claim. LV also offer multi-cover discount, a higher level of cover, and customer service is in a completely different class.

    Interesting topic Jim. There is a grey area regarding annual mileage. I might do an average of lets say 6000 miles pa, so i insure my car up to 8000 pa, however my friend drives my car on a regular basis but drives it on his own insurance for example, so between us we cover an average of 14000 miles per annum. So can you tell me.... As my car has an annual mileage this year for example of circ 14000 miles but i have only covered 6000 miles, is my car still insured after it has covered the 8000 miles allowance on my policy? This is the grey area i am talking about here. 🤔

  • @DefinitelyNotAGuru

    @DefinitelyNotAGuru

    You 100% need to insure for the annual mileage of the car, not just for you. You’re aware that your friend only has third party cover whilst driving your car I assume? It may be wise to just name your friend as a driver.

    No it isn't a motor trade policy. Adrian Flux offer a policy from a third party to run a long side your fully comprehensive policy which allows you to drive other vehicles fully comprehensive up to the value of 20k. You can still drive other vehicles above the 20k valuation but should the worst happen, the most they will pay out is 20k. Obviously the usual rules apply where that vehicle must be insured to be on a road also. The cost to add this cover for me was only £24 which is a no brainer. Unfortunately very few insurance companies offer this additional policy. Everyday is a school day. 😉

    Jim, I don’t agree with your comment that insurers have valid reasons for increasing premiums up and above of 100%! There are many variables used by insurance companies to determine insurance costs and one is postcode. I live in a city so my premium is high even though I have over 30+ years NCB, no endorsements and am in my late fifties. I am semi retired, drive less than 5,000 miles a year and have an off road drive and use a recommended Disklok steering wheel lock. However, my premium is just as high and in some cases higher than a typical driver who lives across the road in another postcode, who leaves his car parked on the road and has no steering lock security!…….the insurance industry is an utter scam and needs regulating correctly so that careful drivers are not subsidising the illegitimate and inexperienced/poor ones who frequent our roads! There appears no regulation and is a licence to print money just as it is for utility companies and large food retailers. Is it any wonder there is so much reported fraud within the industry?

  • @DefinitelyNotAGuru

    @DefinitelyNotAGuru

    8 ай бұрын

    There’s is massive regulation which is part of the reason for the price rise (the cost of jumping through the regulatory hoops is huge). Several insurers have even exited car insurance as they see no way of running profitably. The long andthe short is that they are paying out far more than they’re brining in, just like Wilkinson, Debenhams and numerous retailers were needed to charge more or leave the market in many cases. It’s an inconvenient truth I know but if you pay out £2 for every £1 you take in you either need to put up your prices or exit (many have exited).
