Mahatma Gandhi was not the commander of armies nor a ruler of vast lands. He could not boast any scientific achievement or artistic gift. Yet men governments, dignitaries from all over the world have joined hands today to pay homage to this little brown man in the loincloth who led his country to freedom. In the words of General George C. Marshall the American secretary of state Mahatma Gandhi has become the spokesman for the conscience of all mankind. He was a man who made humility and simple truth more powerful than empires. And Albert Einstein added: Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.

There seems to be a disconnect between people who knew a lot about Gandhi's history (maybe even experienced it first hand) and those who just saw this as a film. You can include me as one of the people who laughed ; there's something inept about the way his death is handled in screen. The way he causally says "Oh God" after taking several shots to the chest, is what makes it seem so comical to people. It doesn't help that this is at the beginning of the film and we as an audience haven't had any time with Ghandi yet, so this scene feels odd out of the blue.

He couldn't come up with a reasonable reply. I said, “Maybe you should read a few books on Indian History, colonization and contemporary world history, a few books on political theory and a bit about sociology perhaps” Most people who hate Gandhi are clueless about Indian History or they have read one-sided history or they were brainwashed by some kind of extreme views or they simply need someone who they can hate!

Gandhi was a great and honest man and titled his auto biography “The story of my experiments with truth.” It is a book of over 500 pages and he went to great length to describe every incident in great detail. One would have hoped that Richard Attenborough would have stayed with the truth from the Autobiography when he produced this movie. However, Attenborough decided to replace it with his own version, specifically in that now famous train compartment scene. That scene even disagrees with the well documented history of the South African Railways. The name printed on the side of the rail cars is “Central South African Railways” (CSAR). CSAR was operated by the two ex boer republics and that name was only used from 1902 onwards, 9 years of this scene. In addition, since the railroad between the Transvaal and British Colony of Natal was only connected in 1895, there could have been no train from the Transvaal in Durban. The correct name on the side of the cars should have been Natal Government Railways. Why did Attenborough choose to use the future name of the railways of the two boer republics? I have also noted the following discrepancies between the Gandhi’s writing and the Attenborough production (1) There is no evidence in the book of that discussion about Hell neither was there a discussion with the attendant or the conductor on how he purchased the ticket (3) There is no mention in the book that he ordered the ticket over the post. The biography states it was booked for him, likely by his contact Abdullah Seth, and the person that booked it would have known if there were any race related rules. Seth stated though that Gandhi should buy the bedding ticket to avoid any problems. Gandhi admitted in his book that he was too stingy and stubborn to buy the bedding ticket. (4) There were no derogatory terms used by the conductor (4) There was no discussion on attorneys of colour in South Africa (5) There is no mention that the conductor had a “boer” accent (played by an Afrikaans actor by the name of Marius Weyers). Since this scene took place in the British Colony of Natal, it is not impossible, but unlikely that the conductor would have been a boer. The boers were farmers and mostly resided in the two boer republics. (5) Gandhi was taken by the hand and pushed of the train by a police constable, not by the conductor (6) There is no mention in his book that he was pushed with such a force that he fell on the elevated platform. Gandhi went further in the book and stated that he was allowed to continue his train journey the following day, in first class and after he bought the bedding ticket, by all indications the root cause of what let to this incident. Why did Attenborough left this part out of the movie? I know that movies are movies but the problem is that movie lies become folklore and I have even seen journalist quoting the events as depicted in this scene, as the true reflection of what happened in that train. For some reason they believe Attenborough’s version above what Gandhi himself wrote. If I can point to at least 8 falsehoods in a 3 minute scene, how much of the details in the rest of the movie can be believed? Or was it just Richard Attenborough’s British hatred for South Africans that broke through in this scene?
