I winced through Illuvatar "moves to Arda"; gritted my teeth at his being joined there by "other celestial beings like himself, called 'Anyar'"; bit my tongue at the talk of Olorin hanging around a lot in Lorien (with its many lakes?!) while showing JRRT's picture of Rivendell; and gave up watching at Gandalf's communicating through visions. Could not bring myself to watch further. This is tripe of the first order. Read the chuffing books.

OMG! I don't wish it discourage folks from making videos like this, but c'mon, learn the pronunciation!!! There are guides in the back of Return of the King and in the Silmarillion. Again, it's great to see efforts like this, but hearing the mispronunciations of Sauron, Ainur, Cirdan, etc., are just plain painful.

The Silmarillion says that Olorin "Spent much time among the Elves, and walked among them for many years unseen, or for a time taking form of one of them, and he was known as Mithrandir, but his works were unknown to them" I believe he was the "mysterious Elf lord" who took the only recovered Silmaril to Doriath (or someplace else I don't remember exactly) after Luthien died. I don't believe for a second that the Elves would trust anyone less than a Maia to do this task, seeing as virtually everybody wanted to steal it from them.

He didn't believe in himself to carry out the task intrusted to him. He chose the form of an old man to gain the trust of the people on middle earth. Imagine if he just kept his young form.

The Valor had tried to stop Melkor/Morgoth and his Leiutenant Sauron multiple times through acts of force so when they decided to send their mayar to Middle Earth from the westlands they opted to have them take the form of Old wizened men to be more relatable to the people of middle earth. The idea was that because the shows of force had always failed instead the wizards would attempt to make sure that the peoples of middle earth were where they should be when they should be there with the only two rules for them in Middle Earth was they could never use their powers to subjugate the people of middle earth or use the powers to directly conflict Sauron, hence the demoting of the white wizard Sauramon .

In case you didn't get it, Gandalf had to take Smaug out lest he ally himself with Sauron. Ditto for the Balrog, Durin's Bane. All three of them were servants of the real dark lord, Melkor. Sauron was chief among them (excepting the original Gothmog, who was his equal.) If Sauron had been able to seduce Smaug and Durin's Bane to his service, he would have been unbeatable without direct Valar intervention.

Gandalf is the saviour of Middle-Earth. He sacrificed himself to save the fellowship from the Balrog. Eru's plan had failed, the only force that could save Middle-Earth had vanquished. Saruman, the head of his order had became Saruman of many colors. Therefore Gandalf was brought back as Gandalf the White.

Gandalf wasn’t sent to save middle earth directly. He was sent with the 4 other wizards to inspire men to rise up against sauron. That’s why they were were called emissaries by Tolkien.

If I'm not mistaken, Maiar is plural and Maia is singular. So Gandalf is a Maia, not Maiar.

The fight is from the TBOFA but his death is from the final fight in ROTK.

The Istari did not age and die like mortal men. Gandalf the Grey was over 2,00 years old at the start of the Hobbit. Looks like he was ageless.

SOMEONE....like the maker of this video....needs to read THE SILMARILLION !! Gandalf and Radagast and Saruman are three of five wizards, but the only ones mentioned because the other two had no part in the War of the Ring. BALROGS and DRAGONS (as well as ORCS) were created by MORGOTH , the most powerful of the AINUR , and originally known as MELKOR before his corruption and fall. SAURON was but a lieutenant of MORGOTH. Sorry, I quit listening to this video after I realized it had been corrupted too....

There is quite a bit in this that is just wrong. Wrong in the sense that there was only surface research into a few things that lead to incorrect assumptions. Example. The Istari (wizards) were not limited as a side effect of their bodies, but as a direct interference of Iluvatar who decreed that the Maiar who took on human form would not have access to the full power of their natural Maiar form. This is expanded upon when Gandalf comes back as Gandalf the White and is "more powerful". This is also misleading. He didn't get "more powerful". Iluvatar decided to let him have a bit more access to his actual power than he previously had.

What was that one name that's really wierd I remember from the movie two towers I think. When king of Rohan was under Saromons control and he calls him Gandalf Storm Crow or something.

I always bristle when I hear someone refer to The Hobbit as a trilogy. It's a relatively short book, almost like a children's fairy tale. $$$ made Jackson stretch it out with often nonsensical filler, trying to replicate the cash cow that was the Lord of the Rings trilogy (which took some irritating liberties for fans of the original). Nonetheless, I enjoyed the LOTR movie trilogy, and actually was moved a few times (elves dying, in particular one at Helm's Deep, whose name I can't recall atm, is always tragic. These beautiful and immortal creatures being killed is such a horrible loss). And yes, the video has some painful mispronunciations of names, but overall provides a pretty good high level summary of Gandalf's life.

Cirdan. All Elvish use of the letter C is pronounced as a K, not an S. So you pronounce Cirdan as Kirdan, not Sirdan. And yes, Hard Core LOTR fans know this, because they read the appendixes.

In short: Wizard = Wise Gandalf is like an angel that helps men along their war against evil more through spiritual and intelectual aid rather than fighting himself using his powers.

This is just straight up bad, sounds like I’m listening to a man who never read the books or learned how to pronounce any of the language

Honestly if you’re going to do a video like this learn how to properly pronounce the names. J.R.R. Tolkien has guides on how to pronounce them...
