One of the MOST glaring & dissatisfying omissions of the entire film adaptation franchise. & it gives a diminished view of Gandalf. It's an epic scene, and Tolkien later states in commentary that during that nightfall till dawn battle, the witch-king himself was badly "shaken by the fire of Gandalf". Much as I loved many aspects of the movies, this is one of several things I found offensive. Even more galling is that, in the Hobbit film, when Jackson & co. finally have a chance to manage something of a redo regarding Gandalf & the Nine Nazgul.... they INSTEAD create a scene where Gandalf is the ONLY Council member present not to engage in the battle, when in the source material, he is actually the ONLY member of the Council specifically noted as having directly dueled with all of the Nazgul together.

@@TheoryoftheRings Wow, I did not see that you had replied, good sir. My apologies for not responding sooner. And, yes, totally agreed, it was a huge miss, & would have made for an EPIC scene in the movie ( & also would have prevented many of the suggestions of Gandalf not presenting with appropriate & sufficient power in his representation ). See also, they should have included some form of the scene where Gandalf & the Balrog engage in a spiritual & magical contest for control of the chamber door in Moria!! They could have done this even without prematurely showing the whole demon ( eyes & a hand would have sufficed ), & it would have gone a LONG way in emphasizing the great power of both Gandalf & of the Balrog, as well as being a MUCH better indicator of the malevolent intellect & will of the Balrog than the film managed to convey.

I thought Jackson's scene where the Witch King seems to have the beating of Gandalf the White was outrageous.

If the four Nazgul did not persue Gandalf, he may have stayed close by and would have been there to assist Aragorn and company when the wraiths attacked Frodo.

If Gandalf didn't lure the four (or was it five?) Wraiths away all Nine would have killed Aragorn and gotten the ring.

@@TheoryoftheRings & the Nine would have been stronger: even the 5 present would have been stronger and more sure. Their battle with Gandalf mere nights before had taken a lot of strength & steam out of them. Tolkien states later that even the Witch-king had been badly "shaken by the fire of Gandalf." It is very likely that, had they confronted Aragorn without having first battled Gandalf, the outcome of Aragorn's defense against them would have gone very differently.

That begs the question "What if Strider and the hobbits had waited in Bree for one more day? At that point, they would have been joined by Gandalf and Shadowfax. What happens at that point? Does Gandalf take Frodo and the Ring to Rivendell on Shadowfax, who was much faster than any of the Nazgul horses while Strider leads the other three hobbits more slowly on foot? Does Gandalf ride back and forth between Bree and Rivendell to transport the rest of the hobbits to Rivendell one by one? Do they follow a slightly modified, more coordinated and planned version of the canonical story where Gandalf rides ahead as a decoy to draw the Nazgul away from the others? Or do they all stay together, relying on the combined strength of Gandalf and Strider to withstand attacks by the Nine?

I also find your statement that the nazgul ‘let Gandalf be’ to be grossly inaccurate; he actually drove them off and Tolkien himself actually stated that the witch king was shaken by Gandalf’s fire. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it!
