GameShark for Windows 95: The PC Game Enhancer

Datel released the PC Action Replay cheat device in 1998, complete with VHS tape and parallel port dongle. It was awful. Didn't stop them from bringing it to the USA in the form of the PC Game Shark!

Receiving many of the same questions like "Does the UK version work, what's inside the dongle, what does the add code button do?" etc Keep in mind that _this is a follow-up_ to the Oddware episode where I talked about the device more in-depth. Many of your questions are answered there :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/ooWipcZ9oLiXpNI.html As for the "add code" button, that's for adding code patch files from the long-dead PC GameShark web server. It is not for activating existing codes.

Ah yes, Recoton. They actually bought STD (yes, that was their name) holdings in 1995, and STD was the parent company of InterAct. The whole history of the Action Replay/Game Shark relationship and interact’s weird business dealings is really fascinating. Dude, glad to see one of these made its way to you. It’s too bad none of the codes worked. I bet it needs specific versions of the games to work. If I remember correctly, you were able to download updated codes off their site back in the day. On a side note, the music they used in those GameShark and Action Replay VHS’ is the most late 90s music possible.

Probably because they were developed by two completely different companies. InterAct made the console GameSharks; when they wanted to cash in on the PC market, it was cheaper for them to buy the US distribution rights for the Action Replay from Datel. There's also the fact that console games tended to have fewer updates and patches, so memory addresses remained relatively constant - not the case for PC games.

  • @RaenYrtham

    @RaenYrtham

Yeah, even though PC games are not region locked, they usually had US and UK/EU versions, with slight code changes, and the fact that PC games were usually patched a few times during their lifetime, can indeed break these cheat code engines.

@@HappyBeezerStudios True. But it falls apart for console games. 320x224 is a pain. 256x224 is even worse. anything which outputs 576 lines is going to be a nuisance too. Especially because the consoles that output 256x224 still output it with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Worse is the PAL ones that have even weirder aspect ratios. Still, The NTSC pixel aspect ratio for 256x224 is 7:6 (the PAL pixel aspect is 25:18) - that means if you scale the image non-uniformly you can use integer scaling and still maintain the aspect ratio. 256x7 = 1792 and 224x6 = 1344 And because of the prime number factor, you have to jump to 14x and 12x scaling... None of these numbers are particularly great. And if you have to support both PAL and NTSC aspect ratios you're looking at a lowest common multiple scaling factor of something like 175x in one direction and 108 in the other... Some of these resolutions are just... Nasty. See, if you had an actual 320x240 image you can scale that up by 3x and get 960x720, which works fine in HD. But a lot of resolutions are weirder than that. Even 320x200 is awkward. Although that PAL SNES I mentioned, with it's 25:18 pixels, actually means that 256x200 is a 16:9 resolution. Except, good luck scaling that up using an integer factor...

That's weird, I only remember Game Shark as the name of a GBA emulator and cartridge. It had the same logo. Back in middle school I was a pokémon master swiming in pokédollars as I was the only person in school who had the extremely tedious to catch Feebas. I bred and traded it to complete the pokedex. Until someone with a game shark showed up and cornered the market with cheated shiny Jirachi.

I think they key difference between US and EU version is that the EU versions usually tend to have support for multiple languages added in while US releases only really need to support English - that can make some slight differences. Nowerdays, that's thankfully not an issue anymore.

Yeah, I grew up with a gameshark for the PS1 and 2, but never knew such a thing was for the PC. ...and with what I know now, I'm scratching my head, wondering what was the point beyond a cash grab for those wanting it easier? Even with a few console cases, it wasn't necessary, depending on what the button codes were like for the game in question.

Man, for years I've been trying to track down an ancient, similar product for the PC that I remember my aunt having back when she was playing Sorcerian, when that was new and fresh. Basically allowed you to edit the memory as you were playing, tracking down your health value and freezing it, for instance, or editing your gold, XP, etc. in games that had those. I remember it having a peripheral with a single red button for actually going into memory editing mode.

I remember when this thing came out in the late 90s...pretty much garbage. Magazine writers pointed out that it didn't work right, had very few codes even for the games it WOULD work with and since cheat codes were common (IDDQD, anyone?) it was unnecessary. Curiously, I bought a later release (it was marked down to maybe 10 cents at the local Electronics Boutique), but it was in a standard jewel case and no dongle. I seem to recall it working with out the dongle, but ultimately it wouldn't work right. Still have one for the Dreamcast, since you can use that to play imports.

@@gabrielmalta1962 I never had any real problems with the console versions (other than the N64 cart version). There were two Dreamcast versions; one had a dongle that was in essence a glorified memory unit and I recall, a VHS tape :). The version I still have is the second version which was sold without a dongle or VHS, and is called a GameShark Lite because of it. You just use your own memory unit with it. There was a version for the original PlayStation that plugged into the I/O port on the back. With the last versions of the OG PS1 Sony eliminated the port (there was a device that could use that same port to create a "safer" way to use the ol' swap trick, so Sony cut it). I still have that version and it works great! There was also one for the Sega Saturn I had, but since I have a 5-in-1 that has the same functions and then some, I gave it to my nephews in the late 90s. I never tried the GameCube version of the GameShark, but I did used to have the version for the PS2. I had no problems with it. The aforementioned N64 version? I had given my nephews my old one in the early 2000s, and they tried it with Super Smash Bros. The GS crashed and I could never get it working for them again. Reports online at the time suggested that was a common occurrence. Other than that, never had any real problems with the console versions.

It's amazing how useless this thing is. I remember having the Gameshark pro for my original PlayStation and it was awesome. Being able to make your own cheats was pretty cool. Took a bit of time to learn, but once you did it changed the game.

Interesting. I had a GameShark for Gameboy, and every single code/item worked perfectly. There was no way to patch or update the ROM in a gameboy cartridge at the time, so there was only one version of machine code that they had to target for cheat codes. Not true of PC games of the era, where you'd get an update whenever. I imagine trying to keep on top of the latest patches of this and that was an unholy nightmare. All it takes is a small code change, and your compiler decides to rearrange items and that would break the patching addresses for your gameshark. Low budget and scope of the product probably turned it into a dummy project that the marketing team felt they had to sell anyway. Dongle is 100% copy protection for sure. You'd have to have pretty sophisticated hardware in it to turn it into an actual trainer, whereas everything necessary for modifying software already exists without the dongle.

had something like this for gameboy advance, i remember it had a black button you could press that would help you find memory cache for whatever you were looking for. like if i lost health with pikachu, press button, then lose health again.... repeat until one memory string was left.... then you could change it to FF for infinite health. you could also use it to change colors on pokemon and do all kinds of 'mods'

I had an old PC into the early 2000s that was an HP where the power supply died on it. It was impossible to access and fully encased. In retrospect I probably could have figured out how to open it. But I didn't. I had this weird frankenstein looking thing lying on its side with another power supply sitting on top connected to all the components, case open for years. I salvaged the supply from another old PC that broke. Good times.

I had action replays on my c64 and Amiga, they were full on hacking and pirating tools contained in a cart that wasnt just a drm dongle. They had built in dissasembler, sprite and sound rippers/editors and memory dump/disk dump pirating utilities. This Gameshark thing is an action replay in name only. Fun fact, Datel released a demo of the dreamcast action replay disk on a magazine coverdisk that contained code for circumventing all the drm in the machine in order to do its stuff, pirates modded the code and created the utopia boot disk to run cd-r`s and open the machine up for pirating. Whoops lol

Future computer historians are going to love you for going over minute details even for the most pointless and redundant software! Someone is going to write their computer PhD thesis on something incredibly niche like Computer Game Cheating in the late 20th century and will use this video as a primary source hundreds of years from now. You’re doing invaluable work!
