Games Where Your Eyes Aren't Enough

When it comes to Clarity, there's sometimes more important things than visuals.
Audio cues carry a lot of the burden of making it easy to understand what's going on in a game, and there's no better examples than Devil Daggers and Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2...

Deep Rock Galactic is a great example of audio cues. Each enemy has unique cries and sound effects that literally echo through the caves to reach you. From your teammates callouts you can tell how much ammo they have, what utility they've used, when they've thrown grenades, and when they've killed an important bug. Pings not only highlight creatures, but the dwarves callout the objects and yell the bugs weakness. From the sound of pickaxe hitting mineral you can tell what type of resources your teammates are gathering. Everything is clearly signaled by diegetic sounds. Mission control contacts you through transmissions to warn of incoming swarms and their types. Meanwhile unannounced waves are heralded by the more subtle sounds of digging bugs, distant cries and the buzzing of wings. Its brilliant and extremely clear communication. Its not uncommon for experienced players to dodge projectiles or know what enemies you'll be fighting in 15 minutes solely on the basis of sound.

Mental Checkpoint has a cool video going into the design of Devil Daggers and has a section on audio that's really neat. He points out stuff like how each enemy occupies a different band of the audio spectrum to keep each distinguishable, to the low droning coming from the four sides of the arena to keep you oriented. Overwatch's sound design is also super impressive. There's a GDC talk about it and they go into things like creating a unique sound signature for each character and mixing priority so that things like an ult callout stands out above anything else, or how more threatening DPS characters have louder footsteps than supports.

the sound in Hunt: Showdown is basically a hard to use wallhack, gotten called a cheater on more than one occasion because i used my ears

  • @Bus-In-Ass-Man

Hunt: Showdown is a great pvp example of sound design enhancing the gameplay, as half of its gameplay is basically trying to not make any noise while also paying close attention to sounds made by others. You have to figure out enemy positions and movement on a big map by listening to sounds of gunfire or environmental "sound traps", like a bunch of crows or a cage of angry dogs making a ton of noise once a player triggers them. Knowing the way each gun sounds in the game is often a matter of life and death, as knowing your opponent's loadout can stop you from making poor decisions, like attacking a heavy sniper without healing yourself to full hp, or trying to get into close quarters combat when the enemy on the other side has a fully loaded shotgun. Paying attention to sounds of enemy's footsteps can save you from being ambushed from behind, or help you kill them through a wall without ever needing to see them. After becoming more experienced in the game you can potentially know exactly what's going on even hundreds of meters away from you just by recognizing patterns of sounds that players make in different situations.

Hunt's audio is second to none! I cannot think of another game that comes close to the level of precision and realistic accuracy in how the game renders footsteps.

Doom 2016 and Eternal are both games that force you to listen. Not so much in the "required for gameplay information" sense, but more of a "you just gotta"

Was just gonna mention doom eternal. More on the equipment cooldowns side since all of them have their own sound queue when ready with the chainsaw being one of the more distinct with the sound of a fuel can being dragged around so you hear the fuel inside moving.

I know you don’t really play them but you should have brought up fighting games and how audio makes unreactable moves visually have more reactability. The sound difference between things like hitting an opponent and blocking the attack matters so much for clarity

FEZ is a platform jumping game. In the secret level Sync, it has disappearing platforms like those in Mega Man. They sync the tempo of those with background music, so players could learn when to prepare their jump attempts. Toto Temple Deluxe is a party game. There's a mode like passing a bomb to others before it explodes on you. So they use a rhythmic melody to indicate when the bomb is about to explode, which is the notes in the beginning of the Mario theme everyone knows.

There is a game I play called Zardy's Maze, which is a horror game where you go through a corn maze while being hunted down by scarecrows. The game was also made by a KZread creator who is relatively well known in the Nintendo community. Basically, sound is very important as to what enemies are near you, and you can know generally what to do if you come across them. That is why there is NO music in the game, only ambient noise.

Ok ok, i frecuently seartch for devil daggers in case a new quality video is uploaded, abd this is one, this video, is something ive been waiting a while for, becuse yes, audio ques are interesting if you think deeply about em, and especialy in devil daggers, i onse playd the game blindloded, and from audio, poitsioning, and a deep understand of enemy behavior alone, i chud survive 90 seconds, (also the luck of not being killed by stupid random SKULL II's) and heres a little fun fact for you that you most likely will never realize unless someone thold you: there are 4 sounds comming from the 4 sides of the arena, all diffrent, and they did this so that youre brain is better at positsional awareness while playing, pretty cool that they did that whit a relly subtile sound, oh and btw there caled SQUIDs not spawners, common mistake, look up the offical names if ya wanna, but i whud like to thank you gor makeing this video and uh, have a nice day

Hello, love your channel. If I may, I have a bit of (hopefully constructive) criticism to make. The tone of your voice in this video feels not well controlled. While it's clear you're trying to emphasize stuff, you end up sounding angry or condescending. It's too bad because the content is awesome. I'm not too bothered by it usually but I know that a lot of people can be very put off. This video was a bit harder to follow for me for this reason. I think you should work on it to be able to have a more chill tone, it would suit your style of content better ! Either way, very interesting video, definitely deserves more views !

Any criticism is great, don't worry. Now you mention it you might be right. It's an attempt to sound enthusiastic but maybe it does sound a bit "angry" to some lol. If the video is hard to follow, it's likely the script more than anything else. It's something I definitely want to work on getting better at and I appreciate the support on it 100%
