GameBoy Advance Fluorescevision - What?

Ойындар

What on earth is Fluorescevision? Joytech found a solution to the GameBoy Advance's terrible screen back in the early 2000's and I had never heard of it! Until now.

  • @Aeduo

Neat. It has a little fluorescent bulb inside. Which means a potentially fairly high voltage supply inside, which would account for a lot of its size in addition to the batteries. Shame the lens came in kinda poor shape out of the box though, and it would've had some pretty poor battery life. Also, mercury.

For the OG Gameboy there was a similar officially licensed product called a Handy Boy, it was the early 90s, so that was a lot less awkward. But it was a really pretty useful magnifier, a screen light, fold out nacels that had stereo speakers, and clip on arcade buttons that made the A and B buttons very large and turned the d pad into a joy stick. It was awesome. It devoured batteries and i owned one for a time.

Looks like a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp to me, similar to those used in flatbed scanners of the era. There will be some electronic components in that enormous back section, as they need to turn the DC battery power into high-voltage (usually around 200v) AC.

I actually had this one as a kid and I can confirm the battery pack did work at one point. The screenlight was also definitely better than any of the wormlight things I remember trying but the magnifier itself got pretty scratched up so it became kinda unusable after a time, also yes it was heavy and big so it wouldn't fit comfortably in your pocket or anything.

Is there a consensus on the best backlit screens and battery packs for something comparable to the GBA shown at the start? The only battery mods I've seen compromise in some way or are only available in the US, and every time the Funnyplaying IPS 2 comes up I've seen people saying how much better they think the AGS 101 is, even if it's much more expensive.
