GameBoy Advance Fluorescevision - What?
Ойындар
What on earth is Fluorescevision? Joytech found a solution to the GameBoy Advance's terrible screen back in the early 2000's and I had never heard of it! Until now.

Remember the IPS screen is bigger So if the images match it does work just not 40% bigger
I never got to see any of the wild accessories for the Game Boy in stores or on TV, but getting to see them now makes me remember a different time when kids could be easily swayed by those kind of things.
Tbh, if I was a kid, I would've loved to have it. I remember having to play with the light turned on and being annoyed at not getting the perfect angle.
"You're not getting a better experience with this." Well, yeah, but you didn't have to wait twenty years for it!
Hey Elliot, just stopping by the comments to say thanks for getting me addicted to the weird and wonderful world of Game Boy accessories, as well as reinvigorating my drive to collect and repair. The crown jewel is a Madcatz rechargeable battery grip for the GBA and the matching Madcatz magnifier/light to go with it. You're awesome and you keep on doing what you do best!
Neat. It has a little fluorescent bulb inside. Which means a potentially fairly high voltage supply inside, which would account for a lot of its size in addition to the batteries. Shame the lens came in kinda poor shape out of the box though, and it would've had some pretty poor battery life. Also, mercury.
I love these type of videos in which you look into old accessories for Nintendo devices

congratulations on 300k!
300K woop, woop. Congrats man, you are awesome.
For the OG Gameboy there was a similar officially licensed product called a Handy Boy, it was the early 90s, so that was a lot less awkward. But it was a really pretty useful magnifier, a screen light, fold out nacels that had stereo speakers, and clip on arcade buttons that made the A and B buttons very large and turned the d pad into a joy stick. It was awesome. It devoured batteries and i owned one for a time.
Congrats on 300k
You just got 300K subscribers. Congratulations Eliot

I have this. I just bought it from a flea market. It is in basically perfect condition. No scratches on the lens and no yellowing plastic. And I must say that I'm quite impressed at how good the light is. I recommend this
Had one of these with my GBA in the early 2000s, was a godsend on motorway journeys at night when I was younger, better than only being able to play when you drive under a street light.

I LOVE your GBA dedicated videos !! 😍
This video 'brightened' up my day! ;)
“Joy Tech is Purple!” Wow that was neat to see an actual working light for those non backlit screens!
You should try your hand at making your own light for the GBA. I know there are all sorts of lighting solutions for the GBA screen but perhaps using one of your old crappy light adapters you can cobble together something that actually works better than this one.
Honestly with good rechargeable AAs the GBA lasts ages, and you can carry as many spares as you need
Love your videos, keep it up
This channel super cool and intersesting thank you for this
I remember having a magnifier for my purple GBA. That thing was pretty much unusable no matter what in the dark.
i did have one of these (not this one but very similar) and having a batteri is so awesome and bac in the day it was the ultimate flex to pull on the AA Peasants, mine used gba's power from the top conector instead of a second AA slot on the light
@4:22 White LED's weren't readily available when this was made, in the early 00's everyone was still busy being amazed by blue LEDs :) I suspect the name gives away that this is using a small cold cathode fluorescent tube.
I used to have something like that for my Gameboy Color. The magnifying glass was horrible, but I loved the light it came with.
This reminds me of playing on my original Gameboy when I was a kid, with the screen light, which was not where near as good as that Joytech one.
I used to have a worm light and this seems way better. Way bigger as well, yet better.
Love your vids
I remember having some monster of a magnifier for the original gameboy that seemed to work quite well. But never had a light that was as good as that, that’s truly impressive.
My brother and I had one of these for the gameboy color. Also had the worm light. Our older cousin always told us what new accessories were worth buying haha
Woah! This looks so cool! Used to have one
Besides an actual backlight, the best light was the bendy one that came out with the gbc. It plugged into the port that you used for the link cable and worked on gba too.
man, i remember having that type of concept to a screen lighting device aw, good times
i got one of these, back in the days, when i got my GBA dir Christmas 👍🏻 and i Loved it❤️
Sorry I was asleep I couldn’t get to see your content earlier
My uncle use to have a gameboy advanced and the magnifier. I remember i use to play super mario world on it whenever he'd bring over his gameboy advance cause that was like my favorite game when i was 3 lol. It feels so nostalgic watching these gameboy advance videos lol
I had such a thing. Worked as a workaround for dark night car drives home from relatives. Thanks GBA, for illuminating my childhood.
YEESSSSS Sorry i missed some of your vids soooo busy studying
Looks like a cold-cathode fluorescent lamp to me, similar to those used in flatbed scanners of the era. There will be some electronic components in that enormous back section, as they need to turn the DC battery power into high-voltage (usually around 200v) AC.
i had something very similar which had LEDs around the edge of the magnifying lens kind of thing, it even came with a rechargeable battery pack. It was really good cause u didn't get a refection from the LEDS the light just went through the sides of the acrylic lens
I actually had this one as a kid and I can confirm the battery pack did work at one point. The screenlight was also definitely better than any of the wormlight things I remember trying but the magnifier itself got pretty scratched up so it became kinda unusable after a time, also yes it was heavy and big so it wouldn't fit comfortably in your pocket or anything.
Very cool. I was fairly skeptical myself at first, but nope- this thing works just as sure as joytech is purple. Very cool. Definitely something I wish I had had for myself back in the day.
Is there a consensus on the best backlit screens and battery packs for something comparable to the GBA shown at the start? The only battery mods I've seen compromise in some way or are only available in the US, and every time the Funnyplaying IPS 2 comes up I've seen people saying how much better they think the AGS 101 is, even if it's much more expensive.
We need a gba screen dimmer, an attachment for the micro that makes it unusable unless the lighting is just right. Also need a gba sp that runs off of double A batteries.

My brother and I actually had this! Used it quite a bit when I was younger
You should make the Gameboy horror for spooktember
what video did he cover that custom retro future style gameboy with the Type C connector? I remember seeing that in the tv capture video too
I have a couple of power packs for the pocket and colour which actually still work great. I think it's because they use the round batteries instead of the flat ones?
I had that exact same thing. Used to play lots of Gameboy games at night before the sp came out
300k that's crazy, well done tho. (Joy Tech is purple)
I'm surprised that it did anything at all. Even more that it worked so good.
Busting out the fleece! Feeling a bit chilly Elliot?
I had this accessory. I don't miss it.
I love these add-ons that turn a GameBoy into a GameMan
From the name I thought this was going to be one of those external frontlights that came out after the afterburner became a thing.
From the days when magazine reviewers were beholden to the word “Behold”
I just purchased a GBA yesterday. I'm definitely thinking of getting the IPS v2 screen upgrade from RetroModding. My question is, do I need the rechargeable battery mod to help this run as well? I have seen that yes, the form factor of USB-C charging is nice, but it doesn't seem necessary compared to alkaline rechargeable batteries
@ToxoRetro
3 жыл бұрын
I've IPS modded without a rechargeable battery. On alkaline batteries and on minimum brightness, it's about as efficient as the stock screen whilst obviously being clear.
Joytech is purple. Congrats on 300K subs! You deserve it Elliot! -Brendan
I had one of those. Not sure if it was the same brand but had the magnifying and light part. I can’t remember having a rechargeable battery but I also don’t remember not having one.

Never mind, mine didn’t have the over head light. The lights were under the glass around its frame. That thing was godsend for those long roads trips at night. I remember having the gameboy color and would play my game as we past street lights.
It is hard to believe that with the exception of the Japanese only game boy light it took until the game boy SP to get a truly backlit or lit display in a game boy. These days we take things like back lit displays and rechargeable batteries for granted. the next time I stumble across one of my old broken Gameboys I'm going to try to fix it and upgrade it. For my younger self
JoyTech is purple. Pretty awesome that it worked
Hey question. I wanted to buy parts from handheld legends yet was going to mix and match colors for all my buttons ybitbit seems to expensive and they said I can't pick out special colors would you happen to know a place I could do that?

Getting proper Goldie vibes from that fleece pal haha
The packaging on that thing is unreal.
The time of no backlit screens was actually pretty short it was only 18 months from the original GameBoy till the Sega Game Gear came out. (And only 6 months between the EU release dates) Oh the number of AA batteries I murdered to power that thing though.
I owned the Nintendo GameBoy Advance rechargeable battery pack for my GBA, but it of course had a proprietary cable for it.
The real OG one you got from blockbuster or another gameing store back in day was best, as it was not locked fully to frame of gameboy so you could just use the light instead, also was more slim and had a big ass light bar that floated above screen.
this is one way to make eliiot happy 😆
I got one of those Afterburner lights inside my GBA. Likely the rarest console I own, technically.
