You missed one. Since you mentioned "Waters become wormwood and bitter". In the Ioka village, (prehistoric) there is a hut, where your HP/MP is restored, by a chick offering you "sweet water". After Lavos enters the scene, she says. "No more sweet water".

Guys... Chrono is not God... Chrono is Goku. Look at dragonball, goku beats up dinosaurs What is chrono doing originally, he is finding time rifts (dragonballs) with the help of Lucca (Bulma) who luckily has the gate key (dragonball radar) which is able of opening the rifts. Next, Magus is Vegeta, prince of a foreign race that attempts to eliminate humanity but in reality is trying to defeat the monster destroying the universe, Lavos (Freeza). Magus is defeated by a swordsman who is very out of place, Frog. (Yajirobe) Ayla = Yamcha because wolf fang fist and he helped goku way back in dragon ball when goku was fighting dinosaurs. Robo = Trunks, a defeated character from the future who has experienced the extinction of humanity and their slavery under ROBOTS!! Lastly, the person Chrono marries at the end, Marle! Guess who Marle is! She's ChiChi, the daughter of a king. (Chichi is the daughter of the Ox King.) The Mammoth Machine represents who Freeza was. The final form was the time traveling android that was influenced by everybody's powers Cell! Cell is the final form of Lavos. PS: Gaspar is Kami and where the God of War is, that's the hyperbolic time chamber. It's why you got so strong in a few minutes real time. Chrono Trigger is Dragon Ball through DragonBall Z!!!

But Chrono Trigger Is Still Based On Bible. Plus, It Was Made By SquareSoft. They Always Make Games Based On Religions (F.F. 1 - F.F. 12, Except F.F 8).

Before Lavos falls you can talk to a girl in Ayla's village. She gives you some sacred water which heals you. After Lavos falls she no longer gives you this boon and tells you that it's gone. I believe another villager mentions that the water has gone bad or doesn't taste right. The passage that Matpat read says that Wyrmwood, our parallel for Lavos here, poisoned the water. Something that minute and specific is very hard to claim as coincidence. It just strikes me as odd because most other Square RPGs are firmly anti-religion, using Christ imagery in the role of villain and ending with you killing god.

I believe after Lavos arrives on Earth, the sweet water that you can drink in Ayla's village to replenish your HP/MP is no longer available as well, much like the biblical reference. However, a major dispute of difference is that you can actually finish CT without Chronos being revived.

Kyle Oppenheimer Lol. Glad I gave you 545 lines worth of laughter :) I mean, just look at the comments section. So many people either threatening Matpat or promoting atheism. It's like geez, separation of church and state much? I belive in God and all but unchangeable ideas are not worth fighting over.

Realistically,I don't know why.90% of all people have a belief in deity, and somehow on KZread you can't find them anywhere. Most of the comments related to the religion are the hate ones.I guess the fools always stand out.I am pretty much disappointed how many atheists know nothing about world biggest religions,at least for general culture.BTW, Amen is translated to ,,that's how it is'' or something similar.

B1gB4d _W0Lf_ Yea,it presents a big part in human history, not only for christians, but also literature and history wise. There are lot of stories which have good point and can help in life.I don't understand hate between two religions, they just believe in what they think is right.I read Kuran and holy books from couple of other religions because I'm interested in what other people believe, and also for learning other cultures. You are one of the small amount of people which don't insult other religions or the principle of religion.Congratulations and have a good life

***** All due respect, but to me, I believe in the entire Bible, and take it all literally because I feel that's how it's intended to be read. I don't like to pick and choose. This kind of comment is a bit insulting. He says that he wants to read it so let him read and choose for himself what he wishes to believe. It isn't right to tell him what to, and what not to believe. Let him read and enjoy himself :)

***** incorrect, that is just your interpretation of it. Many religious people take their own interpretations of what the divine truth is and make it coincide with what the bible says. Or Quran. Or Book of Gilgamesh. Some chistians believe its supposed to all be taken literally, which imo is the most insane view of the bible. Some pick and choose which parts to take figuratively and literally, depending on the individual. So who is telling the TRUTH? We'll never know. Bible is bullshit anyways.

Well, couple of interesting facts. Crono feeding soldiers on the bridge may sound pretty unconvincing. But remember - in 2300 A.D. Crono found a colony of people, starving to death, and retrieved for them some seeds to grow. And that was referred to as a miracle. Yep. Another one. In prehistoric times one of Ayla's tribesman can heal you for free using "Sweet Water". But try to visit him after Lavos' fall and he will mention that there is "no more Sweet Water". See the connection to the Bible with this water becoming bitter?

most of these are easily explained through english names and tranlastions from japanese...like the jerky. the plot stuff is all vague nonsense from revelations with the sole purpose of being able to connect it to anything. lavos, the queen, the time gates, all of it is deeply explained in the texts of the game. lavos is not anything like any biblical demon. zeal is unlike any biblical queen. lavos is an alien parasite that reproduces asexually with the energy it absorbs from dying planets. during the absorbtion process, it releases energy into the planet as well, altering, or intelligently controlling the evolution of that planet. hence magic exists, and the powers of the red rocks from his shell also exist. when he absorbs enough energy, he releases it. destroying the planet, and spawning baby lavos, which will fly into space when the planet is fully obliterated, continuing the process. this is all facts from dialouge in the game itself...not vague interpretations from ancient glorified poets. talk to the gurus, find the hidden areas of zeal, beat the game with every character in your party, do the forest sidequest, its all there. not the bible.

Very awesome theory, I want to add something to the bit especially about Lavos and Revelation. In the dialogue at the beginning of Lavos' final form, depending on who is in your party, it is heavily suggested that Lavos is in fact the hyperintelligent creator of the in-game universe, and did so not for any great purpose, but only for its own selfish exploitation. This reminds me a lot of the démiurge of Gnostic Christians, a group largely wiped out by the mainstream church in the middle ages but having a small revival today. They believe that the demiurge is a deaf-blind crafter spirit/angel who physically pieced the universe together, and thinks himself Supreme God. The Gnostics identified the demiurge with the Old Testament God. Jesus on the other hand, they believed was the incarnation of the Highest God, not the one who built things and made rules, but the God of Eternal Love, the source of all energy including that of the demiurge. Gnostic Christianity was very dualistic, and believed that the inherently wicked (or just false) material world of the demiurge and the spiritual world of the real God were constantly at odds, just like Lavos and Cronos.

So, obviously this video started "debates" on religious beliefs. But for those of you willing to give an honest (and hopefully kind response) I have a question: Is it strange that I believe in evolution and such, but also believe in an afterlife? I wouldn't necessarily say I believe in a God, but I want to think SOMETHING happens to us, or our spiritual selves when we die. But on the other hand, after learning about the big bang and evolution and such, and seeing the evidence that supports those theories, I strongly believe in and support them. I also get sort of uncomfortable when I hear other people mentioning religion. What I mean is if some one says to me "Hey, Jesus loves you" or, "God has taken them up to his kingdom" I get uncomfortable. Because I think something happens when we die, but I also support the science that disproves this. Just thought I would add my thoughts to this. Thanks for commenting in advance.

HCG Kyle If it helps at all, I struggled with such thoughts many years ago. Now I simply don't worry about it. Think of it this way - death isn't some abnormal state. It's actually a regular part of the life cycle for everything. Once you really begin to realize and accept that, you see that the fear and uncertainty of it all comes from our built in biological imperatives to survive, nothing more.

Ohyoupokedme As someone who made the transition from irreligious to Atheist mostly because of the internet and the information I found on it, I agree that there are a goodly amount of Atheists essentially 'trolling' religious videos, and it always pisses me off when that happens. I can also say, however, that I've seen a great deal *more* religious people actively search out the videos of Atheists specifically to laugh at and make fun of (or damn to Hell) the Atheist who made the video, or the viewers; Atheist or not. I've been called so many different names by religious people trolling KZread I literally can't recall half of them. Also: 1) Calling the Bible a 'story book' is offensive only to fundamentalists or overly sensitive persons, as the majority of Christians understand that the tales within are not literal, historical accounts of what happened, and 2) No more so than any other religion in the world. Telling people to watch what they say for fear of possibly offending someone is ludicrous, especially since you just said that The Atheist Experience channel is "dedicated to downgrading Christianity. The Atheist Experience, basically throwing all other beliefs on the ground and stomping on them, then making themselves the "Master Religion'" which is not only extremely offensive to *anyone* involved in, or fond of, the show; but it's also patently and absurdly false. The show is based in Texas, which is overwhelmingly Christian, hence the focus therein, and the vast majority of callers are Christians, ergo the focus there. Even a large number of the hosts and co-hosts are ex-Christian, making it their specialty. Don't tell someone to be careful what they say after already insulting not just one person, but an entire demographic based on religious bias. You're free to believe whatever you want, and until such time as you are *forbidden* to do so, you have no right to claim such absurdities as"making themselves the Master Religion".

Ohyoupokedme Well first of all, I am a big fan of The Atheist Experience. People call in and they debunk their claims. If people don't want a discussion, they don't have to call. Second, atheism is not a religion. It is a lack thereof. Atheism is a religion like not collecting stamps is a hobby. Third, I know I have seen a few immature atheists who go to videos and spout nonsense about magical sky daddies, but you and Megasoniczone need to stop acting like they are the majority.

First, I have to say, I thought I was on to something when you mentioned "Betrayed by a friend" and then I realized that when you go to the dinosaur era for the first time and party with the locals, you are in fact, betrayed by Ayla's closest tribemate whom takes your belongings and allows the Reptites to invade/pillage the village. Well done, sir. Your video is, as I'm finally willing to admit.. As flawless as Chrono Trigger itself.

pretty well reasoned argument, it's entirely possible that the game was written to reflect certain biblical events, although the wise men were never actually named in the Bible, and we can't be certain for sure how many of them there were, as the Bible doesn't say anything about their numbers either, other than speaking of them in the plural form, which means it had to have been at least two the idea of three wise men most likely came from the three gifts, because back when the idea came about, people probably didn't really give more than one thing as a gift

The problem is, Christ is modeled off a handful of messiahs in other religions. For all we know, Chrono Trigger could have been modeled off Egypt's Book of the Dead, for example. Further to that, the story of a messiah isn't the only allegory contained in Chrono Trigger. Zeal is Atlantis, destroyed by its own zeal (great work on the subtlety, Nintendo!).

CursedTrinz Actually it's true. If you look at the timeline to other religions compared to Christianity, Christianity was one of the last religions to truly arise. A lot of Christ comes from the other symbols of other religions, and a lot of the devils and HIS symbols come from religions that Christians didn't like.

Purple clothing(capes) in ancient cultures especially Africa (which the Romans and Greeks copied) used that color to represent royalty. Most of the stories in Chrono Trigger come from cultures around the world. Their legends. Ayla's story comes from the movie 65 million B.C. It is mentioned (or hinted at) somewhere in the game that Chrono's father did go off as a soldier to go fight off in some distant war. Marle/Chrono's story is classic royalty sneaking off prince/princess to shrug royal responsibility. Lavo's story is based on the theory that the Earth is pregnant/living. Gaea Theory. The names of the "three wisemen" as you call them, had had their names changed like others in the game to something that "Westerners" would recognize. Saying that. Weren't they all the same guy? It's been about two years since i've played. The Masamune come directly out of Japanese samurai cultural history. Frog is out of English history, the night who failed to save the princess and cannot return until he atones. Chrono Trigger uses a lot of world cultural and mythological history and then modern day theories about what may have happened in prehistory and what may happen in the future if we continue down our path. But i don't recall anything that relates to the bibble.

Actually the Masamune is called “Grandleon” in the Japanese version, which is a more appropriate name for the legendary European-based broadsword that Frog wields. I don’t know why the Japanese version has a western name for the sword, but the Western localization changed it to a Japanese name.

Emmett Chan to that I answer, we do not need a Bible. I believe the dogma taught in the Bible is mind-binding and makes one a little less able to think for himself as a rationnal being. I do not despise religion, quite the contrary, because they are extremely rich of wisdom. I simply believe the Bible's message has been bent far to much through the ages to be representative of its true purpose: Peace.

The characters of Chrono Trigger were designed by Akira Toriyama based on sketches from the story planner Masato Kato. The development team wanted a diverse cast to reflect the various eras visited by the player; while working on the in-battle actions of the game, they decided to include a playable character that was neither human nor robot. Kato drew sketches for a cast of eight playable characters, comprising a male protagonist, the daughter of a fairy king, a tin robot, a monster man, an inventor girl, a demon king, a primitive girl, and an old sage. Pig and monkey characters were also considered. Six of the initial ideas were reworked by Toriyama, while the old sage character was scrapped and the monster man replaced with Toriyama's own frog man design. In addition to the artwork for the main cast, Toriyama designed the non-playable characters and the monsters of the game, though Hironobu Sakaguchi contributed the idea of the singing robot Gato. The development staff studied all the drawings Toriyama made for the game and tried to be as faithful to his lighthearted style as possible. In particular, humorous names were chosen for several characters. The staff noted that this kind of humor would have been impossible in the Final Fantasy series. Some of the names used in the English localization of the game were INSPIRED by Biblical characters, including Belthasar, Gaspar, Melchior, and Simon Magus. However, Kato did not especially have the Bible in mind when writing the story and was not aware of the names created by the translator Ted Woolsey. Crono’s resurrection, furthermore, does not come from his own power but by the rest of the party members. In combination with the time egg, they don’t so much “resurrect” Crono as “yank Crono out of the exact moment where Lavos causes him to disintegrate out of existence On this point, then, it’s a figurative resurrection rather than (as in the Bible) a literal one. On that note, does Jesus travel through time and space to help the Crusaders in the Crusades? Any of the Crusades? Well, no, not really. In fact, not much of anything religious happened, moreso that the fighting took precedence over genuine expressions of faith So how else can we connect Jesus to Crono? Not in many solid ways, unfortunately. Thus, Crono doesn’t carry a whole pack worth of food, merely a bag. The developers can’t waste their time devoting precious sprite art to food products (much cooler battle animations are better), so they use your brain’s ability to recognize the symbol for food as a way to make it realistic without all that extra work. The life spell and light magic hate to say but all the the protagonists in most JRPGs (I’m thinking Cecil, off the top of my head), and so can other party members (Marle comes to mind off the top of my head). In a similar way, Crono not having a father also doesn’t necessarily connect our spiky-headed friend to Jesus Christ. Again, how many protagonists in JRPGs are either 1. special magic children 2. have no parents 3. have just one parent? A lot. The trial’s fixed, sure, but other media fixate on the idea of fixed trials for innocent men, and it’s not as if Chrono Trigger never borrows from a huge well of well-known action-adventure tropes. The third angel sounded, and a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of waters. 11 The name of the star is called Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the waters, because they were made bitter. Chapter 8 describes the judgments of the seventh seal through the seven trumpets being sounded. Some destroy plant life, others destroy all sea life (through a meteor), and the third referenced above causes one third of the world’s water to become undrinkable. So what is Lavos here, and why does he not seem to fit into any of these interpretive frameworks? He’s a positive judgment, or Allah, or evil, or good, or something. All of these references make for an incredibly poor retelling of the Bible story, at the very least! It’s hard to fit Lavos into any of these, because he’s a giant amoral space parasite; “good” or “evil” are only applicable in human terms. The woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls, having in her hand a gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her immorality… Schala was not Scarlet Schala doesn’t really fit the profile of the Whore of Babylon And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness; and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast, full of blasphemous names, having seven heads and ten horns…The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sits, 10 and they are seven kings; five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; and when he comes, he must remain a little while. 11 The beast which was and is not, is himself also an eighth and is one of the seven, and he goes to destruction. 12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the beast for one hour. 13 These have one purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast a simple glance at the Official Nintendo Player’s Guide fixed the problem. In phase 1 of the Lavos final boss battle, the beast copies 9 bosses for their “temporary reigns”. Just short of the 10 we’d need to make that connection more solid Both of these verses cited are really problematic from default as the Game Theorist emphasizes the words of English translations rather than the original Koine Greek text. What a confusing morass of claims! directly the parallels do not work

There's so much more to Chrono Trigger than meets the eye. I'm doing my very first play through of it and god is this game incredible. It doesn't just parallel the bible in terms of the flooding and the mythos, and extermination of humanity, but it questions the very nature of time and destiny itself. In a scene during a sidequest they realize that something else is controlling the time gates. This brings about the question, who's really in control of time? Were your characters ever really changing or history? Or was history already written out that way? Lavos was bound to the same changes you make throughout your journey, so what is Lavos really? If its bound to these same chains of time, what greater purpose does your journey really serve if at the end all of these time lines are erased and changed and undone? Chrono Trigger is one of the few games that manages to do something few games do. It becomes bigger than itself. It becomes instead of a question about your journey, to a question of the nature of time and the role it plays and the impact we have on the world and that our actions may actually serve some greater unknown purpose far beyond what any of us comprehend. Is it one giant time paradox? If that's the case, and man was meant to eventually discover time travel, does that mean we're all one giant time paradox as well?

I think when it comes to Chrono Trigger it did one thing for me I never counted on. Otherwise they don't make any sense.

I would like to point something out. As a practicing Catholic, I understand that some people disagree with our beliefs, and as such know little about it. I would like to just say that when you address Christ's divine powers as "magical" you are blaspheming. You are, of course, not responsible for this sin, as you are acquitted due to your ignorance, but "magic" is a satanic power used to lure people into performing acts of evil. The miracles that Christ performed throughout His life are of divine nature, and as such need no illusion, or trickery, as is involved in magic. I would finally like to say that I realize that a vast majority of those reading this comment are going to be Atheist, Agnostic, Muslim, Jewish or some other faith. I respect that you have different beliefs than me, and I will not insult your religion, or lack thereof, so please do not insult mine.

It's coincidental. Back in the September 13th 2002 issue of Gamepro, there was an interview with head writer Masato Kato asking about the biblical connections. It turns out the writers were not thinking of the bible, and the references from it were fairly random; possibly suggestions from Tanaka and Takahashi, Xenogears team members who worked on the game who had much larger interests in religion. A lot of the references are not specific to the bible either, but in a wide variety of cultures and stories.

sectarians will never hear to the actual fact, they prefer to ignore and remain mindless. although nice info, Xenogears was a good game for smart people.

Japanese creators in interviews are often purposefully vague and even outright lie in order to save face for their company and avoid controversy. If Kato did use Christianity as a base for the story, you would probably never know unless you were a close family member.

This falls back to my statement on Final Fantasy hating religion. Squenix just really likes to use religious elements because they conjure the most emotion. Yup
