    Roman archaeologist here. You did really good! But I noticed a few small sins of your own. If you need me to cite sources, please let me know! Romans did have the technological capacity to make large moving stone doors. In the Domus Aurea, Nero’s palace, there’s actually an entire dining room that would rotate as the day went on. There actually is an account of an amphibian assault on barbarians in Caesar’s Bellum Gallicum. Reportedly, several ships loaded with troops came near the shore, but then the men all jumped out and swam (yes, swam) the rest of the way into the beach. Racism would’ve made sense in this game. Romans believed themselves to be superior. Technically, olive oil was prominent in Rome, and was able to burn if ignited, though obviously not explode. I wouldn’t cite Commodus in gladiatior if I were you. That movie is almost equally filled with historical innacuracies. Orcus would’ve been a bit more commonly used as a Roman term for the underworld than Pluto. It actually would’ve made sense for Marius’ house to come with a fully equipped forge. Wealthy Roman estates, or villas, almost always had an industrial purpose to them. Not just for living and/or relaxation. Stripper to customer ratio would’ve made sense. Romans had a lotta brothels. The colosseum couldn’t transform as depicted in the game, but there are reports that it could be filled with water in an extremely short amount of time. They would use this to have naval battles. Athena and Ares? I think you mean Minerva and Mars. Caligula came BEFORE Nero.

    The Romans did have technology to make elevators and such, but it wasn't that complex. It was used to send animals into gladiator fights to make it look like they appeared out of nowhere, or for rigging theaters to make actors and sets move and fly. They even flooded the Coliseum for ship battles. But moving stones like this? Nah, I don't think so.

  • @chrisa3289

    @chrisa3289

    That moving atone is simple engineering, especially for that day. It could easily be set with a rope and pulley system, Nero when he turns the vault could be cutting a rope lowering the stone, they could likewise have a setup to make the stone close back and seal entrance, this was in the emperors palace BTW

    @@gustavfrye2736 as far as I can recall (I'm not at uni anymore so don't have access to a lot of the papers now) the argument was based on the fact that there were so many entrances (80 for the Colosseum) and the underground area below the arena would have made it very difficult to hold in enough water, so essentially they doubt it because of the architecture of the Colosseum itself. Sorry I don't have any of the actual papers with the discussion, but I'll try and find some

    @@guilhermehank4938 The Byzantine Empire - or Eastern Roman Empire - is more or less a direct continuation of the Roman Empire that reigned from Constantinople until only 570 years ago. And even by the time the Byzantine Empire fell, there were some pretty substantial cultural, political, social, religious, and military changes from Nero's time. A few examples I can reference by memory are: 1. Religious shift from Roman Paganism to Christianity. 2. The common language shifted from Latin to Greek. 3. The Roman armies famously used legions, and the Byzantine armies did not. 4. The Eastern Roman Empire - as the name suggests - had a far more eastern style to it than the Western Empire; from architecture to fashion; which had Turkish, Arab, Chinese, and Balkan influence. And after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, western influence would have come from factions like the Lombards and Goths.

    Also, Nero was only 30 when he died. As for Hades/Pluto, since Roman culture was so heavily influenced by Greek culture, a term like Hades would have been common, especially among the literate upper classes; it might even have been the preferred term in polite company, much as it was preferred to "Hell" in polite 19th century English-speaking society. And man, that is probably the most tired plot of any Roman-based story: a good emperor or general is just about to "return Rome to the people" but is betrayed by some villainous usurper. The Republic was no people's paradise either, it was just as dominated by the rich and militarily powerful, and just as corrupt and brutal. The change to empire had more to do with the consolidation of power in the hands of one person at the expense of the Senate than with any change in the standard of living among the vast majority of people. If anything, the common inhabitants of Rome itself benefited tremendously from imperialism.

    Small correction, Caligula came before Nero, not after (37-41 AD for the former, 54-68 AD for the later). Nero was succeeded by a series of minor names as they all vied for the title of emperor each ruling for only a few months before being deposed, until finally being secured by Vespasian and then his son, Titus, returning from exile and victories in the east, including famously sacking Jerusalem and destroying the Temple of Solomon after rebellion arose there.

I'm not immune to it either; for some reason I'd just like to make them scream my name and be completely devoted to my sheer manly manliness. The odd part about it is because I don't feel that way about other women; with them, I still want them to scream, but I want it to be based on.....love, I guess? Like, there's more to sex than just the physical aspect for me; I am able to channel my emotions towards that person into physical action, and likewise for her, and it's as close to true oneness as human beings can get. but it's like I, and many others, simply want feminists to be their sexual slaves or something, "worshipping the cock" or whatever. But I'm just like "Wtf?! WHY?" I just don't understand. *I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND.*

    The whole Queen's Latin thing has been chuckled at since the 50s if not before. I've even seen a couple of comments on Roman empire-based movies complaining that some of the actors had "inauthentic" American accents. Thing is though, since we ultimately don't know what Classical Latin sounded like -- we have some pretty educated guesses, but short of actual recordings, no definitive proof -- any attempt to do a game or movie in Latin would end up being just as inauthentic as using modern languages. It isn't just a matter of knowing how each letter or word is pronounced; every language has its own melody created by things like intonation and stress. Look at Italian: somebody who's never heard of Italian could read each word perfectly phonetically, and even be understood, but it wouldn't sound anything like real Italian as spoken by actual Italians.

    As long as you're pointing out historical inacuracies, here are a few more. 1. Nero looks to be at least 60 despite dying at 30. 2. No aqueducts (or at least anything resembling Pont du Gard) existed in Britain at the time. 3. The Iceni at the time were ruled by Boudica's husband Prasutagus, not her father. 4. Neither Hadrian's wall nor Antonine wall (the only walls Oswald could be referring to) existed during the 1st century. 5. Their exists no archaeological or historical evidence apart from the claims of Caesar and Strabo that any barbarian tribes used wicker man for human sacrifice, and it was an accusation they leveled at the Druids of Gaul, not the tribes of Caledonia.

    Honestly, I kind of feel he sinned it wrong at times and misinterpreted the game as a whole. He tried to take it as historical game, who's context should line up with actual Roman history. When in actuality it was never meant to be historically accurate or play to the actual timeline of events that real characters were in. Such as Nero, Commodus, etc. I also feel he criticized literary features such as "PUNCTUATED!FOR!EMPHASIS!" incorrectly. Like, I'm sorry, would you rather have Marius recite his line in the speed of 'Rap God?' But, overall, just my opinion. I'm a mega fan of the game and have a huge interest in Roman History. So it's fair to say I'm a little biased.
