It's usually the humans fault. Christian religion is the best example. How many where killed and also burned at the stake, in the name of GOD. So that fits pretty much any religion, when it is taken to the FANATIC extreme.

@@eiyu-okuroryokan2634if God made everything, including what is good and bad, then by what standard can we measure God's goodness apart from the morality he supposedly instituted? If God made the rules, whatever he does is good by default, even if it was to kill a kid. Or a dozen of them. Doesn't matter. On the other hand, if God is good not because he made it so but because we can measure it, then there must be some things God didn't make such as morality. Melisandre subscribes to the former. Ser Davos subscribes to the latter.

I love how Jon never met Shireen, never seen her burned alive, but the gravity of Davos’ words and the fact he is an honest man made Jon side with him. Lord Snow knows who to trust.

Those shared journeys -- across land or through repeated scenes and dialogue -- in the earlier seasons made the show what it was. It fleshed out the characters and made them rounded, genuinely people with understandable motivations and coherent actions. The condensed final few seasons did away with that and tainted everything.

Shireen's death was heartbreaking. She was some of the few truly benevolent souls in Got. Perhaps it is fitting that the gods revived Jon when Shireen was sacrificed, one good soul for another. But it is also fitting that Stannis and everyone who allowed Shireen's death to happen met their end when they sacrificed her.

Also, it's worth adding that Melisandre's goal had always been to kill the White Walkers. She had the absolute best intentions when it came to Stannis and Shireen here, but ultimately her fanaticism to protect from evil misguided her into killing an innocent in vain. It's really tragic, in a way.

This is one of the greatest dangers of religion. Mel believed so strongly that she was right, that her god was telling her what had to be done to fulfill destiny, that she was willing to do something unspeakably awful. Obviously she feels remorse, she’s not outright evil, but she also didn’t question anything until that point. Aemon said “Love is the death of duty.” I’m starting to wonder if belief isn’t the death of reason.

How does anyone want to live after going through that? This is what religious fanaticism leads to when taken to its utmost extreme. Troops need morale before going into battle. This had the polar opposite effect.

He's a great character, and great actor. But in this scene, we are one sided morally against Mellisandre where I see her as acting to push things "forwards" in a more "by any means necessary" sort of way. In a sense, she didn't specifically need Shireen, but rather royal blood and Shireen was the only one shy of Stannis himself*. Stannis and his wife both served Shireen up so it was far more morally their failings than Mellisandre's and Mellisandre would have accepted using anyone -- Renly or another of Robert's bastards. Also, in the same vein that she willingly used Shireen, she also voluntarily saved Jon Snow. * Serious fantasy plot hole: if Stannis' daugher was royal blood, then it's because of Stannis himself. The show clearly established with Renly that they don't need to kill the royal person for the effect to take hold. In fact, it seems pretty dumb to kill such a person at all if they could just have an endless supply of it from a living person who produces royal blood. The only "rule" that would make sense to kill is if the bigger the ask, the more blood is needed at the same time, essentially requiring death if it's too much blood. But 3 tiny leeches killing (fate twisting) three potential kings in war was huge. Surely they didn't need Shireen to die just to melt some damn snow to have a chance at a battle with Roose Bolton?

Totally agree, season 6 had some of the last big hurrahs the show had left to give, it's just a shame it was brought lower by a lot of really terrible writing. This scene's great but we have to put up with Davos and Melisandre just kinda lounging around for an entire season because the writers were too scared to have them do anything else that might not give them the perfect setup for this one scene. I mean we don't even get a conversation between the 2 about Stannis, the man both had dedicated their lives purpose to beyond 'oh yeah, he died'.
