A lot of people don't realize what Robb really did. He didn't let him go out of mercy , he purposely let him go so that the spy can tell Tywin 20,000 soldier is coming for him at his camp but instead, Robb attacked riverrun and easily won since all the soldiers were baited to defend Tywin's camp. While at riverrun, they captured Jaime Lannister.

The thing is, they never really went into detail about it in the series. You only knew what happened after Tywin mentioned that they were tricked, and when the camera showed Robb was successful in his campaign and captured Jaime.

I still think it's a shame Robb and Tywin never met, the conversation would've been epic

Not many people understand this scene. There's a reason Robb let the scout go. Robb told the scout to tell Tywin that he's coming. The next episode he sent two thousand men to distract Tywin while Robb went straight for Jamie and his army and caught him by surprise. Jamie's army was finished and Jamie himself was captured. Brilliant move and military man Robb was. Just not too smart making choices like getting married when he should not have.

You don't have to like someone to respect them. Tywin did come to respect Robb as an adversary. It is precisely why he got the Freys (and in turn the Boltons too) to betray Robb and murder him at his uncle's wedding. In the show, I remember Tywin reasoning that he did it to cut the head off the snake and end the war rather than have it drag on and thousands more die. Tywin respected that Robb was a good commander and realised that continuing to fight out a war with him would be so costly that if he did win (which was not assured), his victory would be Pyrrhic. I liken this to the scene when Robb captures Jaime and Jaime challenges Robb to a duel. Robb declines the challenge saying that if he did that, he'd lose. He respects Jaime as a good swordsman and appreciated how good he is at it, which is why he declined the challenge because he recognised that he is a better swordsman than he is. So similarly, (in both instances: Tywin to Robb; and Robb to Jaime), they respect the ability of their adversary, even if they despise them.

Even until today, he still is my favorite character.

If he hadn’t killed Karstark, then he still would’ve had his big army. But by choosing to marry Talisa instead of the Frey girl, he disrespected the Freys. He gained Walder’s ire and he should’ve expected that.

@@crazyhercules9442 Agreed, between his mother freeing Jaime, him getting married to Talisa and him killing one of his biggest allies while at war he was actually destined for failure. He's still one of my favorite characters tho.

Robb was pretty smart for someone as young and inexperienced as he was. He was able to defeat the "clever", "cunning" and "experienced" Tywin Lannister thrice. But, as Maester Aemon said, love is the death of duty and the moment Robb forgot his duty in a war against the "clever", "cunning" and "experienced" Tywin Lannister, it was all over for him. Still, I will say that if it weren't for Cat's stupidity or the Karstark's betrayal/desertion, Robb would still be alive and kicking Tywin's ass. Robb always had his doubts about the Boltons and knew never to trust his bannermen with Jaime Lannister, and he was right on both of those counts too.

Monkey D. Uchiha I agree with this. Robb was young and kind of thrust into warfare; and everyone knows that when it comes to war, everyone has something to lose and/or gain. It's hard to trust your bannermen when you've captured an enemy that belongs to one of the richest families in the world. Robb had to worry about that; then, he had to worry about his best friend betraying him, having untrustworthy/sketchy allies...even his own mother betrayed him by letting his most needed captive go. I can understand why he decided to marry Jeyne/Talisa. He had no one to turn to and he was still young and in that place where he yearned for his own happiness. It was a dumb decision, but it's something anyone of us would've done, given the chance.

Robb won every battle. His failure was when he married Talisa, he became more sloppy and took his eye off the prize. Like how he neglected to inform Edmure of his plan to lure Tywin West deeper into the Riverlands. Edmure ended up pushing the Lannisters forces back into King's Landing so they were able to regroup with the Tyrells and stop Stannis at Battle of Blackwater. Robb blamed Edmure but Robb was just as much at fault. His honor also was in the way when he beheaded Lord Karstark to exact justice for the two Lannisters Lord Karstark killed, thus eliminating half of his army as the Karstark forces marched home. TL:DR - Robb was a good military commander but shit at politics.

sumit dalal I think one of the biggest problems with marrying Talisa is that she just brought nothing to the table that Robb needed. Walder's Frey daughter offered Robb 4,000 extra soldiers to his cause, equipment to keep him well-supplied, and access to the Twins crossing. That's HUGE. Talisa was just some hot medic from a family from Volantis that offered Robb nothing. No wealth, no power, no soldiers, etc. Nothing.

Robb was a genius when he thought with the head on his shoulders rather than the one between his legs.

Robb had to be more tactical because he had less men and it shows how smart he was compared to the later generals. The battle of the bastards didn’t really have any cgi bullshit Jon was just too proud and attacked head on

I think Sun Tzu said that if you capture enemy scouts, you should give them false information. As someone pointed out in the comments below, he told the scout to tell Tywin that the entire Northern army was coming straight for him and so the Lannister army would then muster around Tywin, leaving Jamie relatively undefended. Very smart move

Robb stark is a genius. He manage to plan such critical strategy within a minute after knowing the lanister scout. Who would have thought he would use the scout against tywinn by moving his army on a differen path and capture jaime lannister... truly remarkable commander and ruler no doubt

Robb was by far the best Stark there was he only lost because he got betrayed.

Robb Stark is a genius. He made Tywin believe that he is gonna charge at him like some war hungry 16 year old. Instead he attacked Jaime.

Robb and Arya stark is the son and daughter Tywin always wanted but never got. It's a shame Tywin n Robb never met. Some of the convos between Tywin N Arya in the show are pure gold.

Robb was my favorite character in the first 3 seasons because most of the decisions and mistakes he made were something real people would do or make and it just added a certain level of realism to his character, and the acting was on point as a bonus.

If you want something done, let your enemy do it for you. Well done Robb.

I started being easier on the decision of Robb, Sansa, Jon, even Theon when I began learning more of the back story of these characters. These are children...forced into circumstances where they are making choices with drastic life or death implications. I think Robb began getting caught up in the "Young Wolf" persona he was earning. If I was a mid-teen Im damn near certain I would have been feelin' it a little myself.

Maybe? So? he won all the battles.... without being betrayed it wouldn't have been a problem. Hell, even betrayals happen... but the Red Wedding was something unheard of in the history of Westeros. You never break guest rights, NEVER!!

Cat ruined it for Robb, they had the upper hand with taking Riverrun and capturing Jaime.

Lightning Snow Well, technically, he sent 2,000 Northerners to die here, against Tywin. So if we want to throw about technicalities, he did lose this battle to Tywin (even if he did win a more significant battle at the Whispering Wood)

Unpopular Opinion : Cat has always been the foolish one in the family. She was the one who asked Ned to trust Littlefinger. She was the one who captured Tyrion Lannister just because Littlefinger told her he was the one who wanted Bran died (which started the rivalry between the houses officially and resulted in death of the Stark guards in capital and Ned losing his leg). She freed Jamie Lannister in the hopes of him returning her daughters. Also, if it weren't for Edmure, Rob would have captured Gregor Cleagane too. So except for Balckfish (who played a very crucial role in the Battle of Whispering Woods), the Tullys have been the downfall of Starks

Yes Cat is an idiot, she basically single handedly started the war of the 5 kings and inadvertedly killed half her family. That being said tho, Rob screwing over Walder Frey was arguably a more stupid move.

She did not. The war was inevitable. It started the moment Jon Arryn was murdered and the Lannister's were blamed. Ned should not have trusted Littlefinger, but he killed himself confronting Cersei and giving her time to leave as an out. None of them really knew how truly untrustworthy and disgusting these other house's could be. The only one she did call out and was ignored, was Walder Frey.

Wyman Manderly, Galbart Glover, The Greatjon, Mors Umber, Hother Umber, Lady Dustin, Bran, Rickon, Jon, Arya, Sansa, all of the Northern hill clans, Howland Reed, Davos Seaworth, Stannis Baratheon. Lannisters have it coming Jaime and Cersei are next and they deserve to die. Lannisters lost a battle commander and the glue of te lannisters- Tywin Lannisters lost their one man army -Jaime Lannisters lost their brains and balls- Tyrion Tommen is the king Targaryen backed by the Unsullied and 3 large Dragons as well as red what ever they are called warriors Martells who are willing to make Dany queen and give her a large army. Martells want to kill the lannisters for the murder and rape of elia martell and her children and oberyn So all of Dorne The Greyjoys wanted to secede but the lannisters and starks thwarted them. And then the boltons are fucking with them So the Iron Islands Baratheons. Stannis the Mannis. Once he liberates the north and gains their support he is comin for the throne North- Once the boltons/greyjoys are fucked they are coming back Tullys Brotherhood without Banners The vale- Littlefinger is like lord regent of the vale and since he orchestrated the murders of jon arryn and joffrey and as well as lysa he was started the war of five kings and later the death of oberyn, the mountain, and tywin. and caused tyrion to flee as well as varys Tyrells- Loras can still fuck the lannisters if he wanted to because of renly's death which was technically stannis but still So tl'dr Unsullied Dragons Dorne North Riverlands Iron Isles Baratheon army Wildling Army there is more but yeah

Basically that’s what they did when they fought with Jon Snow. Because Jon’s side was the only one that would legitimize their presence south of the wall, they agreed to fight with that side.

Robb was the best character in GoT.

I miss Robb, the rest of the Starks in s7 are just weird tbh...

only in the show tho ... in the books, he send 18000 infantry against tywin. cause 2000 wouldn't be able to do shit. not even bait out a battle. He let Lord Bolten lead them, since he was a cold strategist and experienced. So he would be able to fight and stall Tywin, without loosing too much. And himself he just took 2000 cavalry and ambush tactics to destroy the whole Lannister Army under Jaime and lift the Siege of Riverrun. Even better if u ask me :D

"How high did you get?" is a pretty badass question.

This is a scene when I smile. A lot. Imagine Robb as the commander in Roberts rebellion. Robert smashing morale hand to hand, Ned lifting it and Robb planning the moves. Not even the Targaryrens win that fight.

Dude, U have no idea what u r talking about. These Guys are good and even great also. But the Targaryens are on whole other bro... They were like Gods in certain period lol... Just imagine, What would have happened if they rebelled during the Dragon Age, or even leave the Dragons out of it... Just think of any competent ruler in the Throne instead of Aerys, let's just say Bloodraven for example... I assure U, the Rebel forces would have killed atleast twice or thrice lmao. Hell, for all his fault and madness, the Mad King's era litetally had a chance at winning the War even after making a million mistakes from their End lol...

Rob outsmarted even the audience, few noticed rob sent the scout to make tywin believe he was marching south in full force when actually he was crossing the twins to go for jaime

This scene next to the battle of the bastards and Season 8 clearly shows that Robb was the better strategist than Jon. Robb was always thinking ahead and predicting his enemies movements and decsisions

That’s insane that back in the old days, the only way to find out how large the enemies army was, you had to send a scout to individually count the men. *Insane.*

I love the way Robb put Cat in her place. It's like that scene in the Godfathers when sonny speaks out opposing Vito during the drug meeting.

And Trusting boltons who are known for killing Kings in the Norths a house who betrayed him long before the Red Wedding 3.Killing the Karstark instead of taking him as a hostage. *Honor* in this game is nothing but a title. some may respect you and admire you for it. some may even trust you because of it. but when surrounded by enemies camouflaged as allies , you'll have to throw away honor and be ready for betrayals.

+Doctor Kiryuu You forgot a big #4. Sending Theon home. Somehow Robb forgot the whole purpose of Theon being with him was to keep the Iron Islands in check. Roose betrayed Robb the moment Balon attacked the North. He saw early on the kind of mistakes Robb was going to make and turned as soon as it looked like he was making them. He didn't understand the politics of the war and thought just winning the battles was enough. Tywin lost most of his army during the war, but won it with a few pen strokes because he understood how to play the game.
