Game of Thrones and the War of the Roses

The Wars of the Roses, a series of civil wars fought between 1455 and 1487 by English nobles seeking to control the crown, was one of the inspirations for the fictional wars in the source novels for HBO’s popular “Game of Thrones” series. John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place will recount a brief history of the actual Wars of the Roses and draw lessons they may yet have for our own time.

    The word dolphin comes from the greek word for womb, as does the greek word for brother (like Philadelphia). Womb feels like an appropriate word for an heir.

    You guys should a lecture on LOTR stuff and how Tokien ties everything to the world building and myth building and the epic poems they were based off of. Especially since Tokien was devoutly Catholic so the questions of souls and if some evil beings are ever redeemable. The elves' immortality and the Gift of Men (death) seems like it would make a cool topic. The new Amazon show is starting up so it's good timing. The mythos is an interesting fusion of the monotheism (Eru Illuvatar) and polytheism (The ainurs).

    Listening to John's Centre Place video on the old saxon genesis (which influenced Milton's poem paradise lost) it is easy to see that Melkor and Sauron are based on the Christian devil. LOTR seems to be based on Christian heresy from Sagas and Fey that didn't get incorporated to Gnostic and anti-Trinitarian stuff that didn't make the cut at the Council of Nicaea. He talks about some of this during different different topics but I agree, a topic video timed with an Amazon ad campaign would blow up the channel and give NERDs like you what ya want ;)

    Guigues IV, Count of Vienne, had a dolphin on his coat of arms and was nicknamed le Dauphin. The title of Dauphin de Viennois descended in his family until 1349, when Humbert II sold his seigneury, called the Dauphiné, to King Philippe VI on condition that the heir of France assume the title of le Dauphin. The first French prince called _le Dauphin_ was Charles the Wise, later ascending to the throne as Charles V of France, 1364-1380. {:-:-:}

    Richard lll should have never rode into the middle of an invading army. Like Henry V,Richard lll should have taken a defensive position with his archers & then cannons to take off the invading army's charge & then send in infantry to pin em. So the calvary could mop up. The invading army has to attack because their time is limited. And they have to kill the reigning monarch. Richard lll delivered himself right into their mist. That said i acknowledge Richards llls army was not very cohesive & he had portions probably defecting. Very difficult battle for Richard to control effectively.the boar died, so the dragon could rise!

    Okay, so the title says 'The Wars of the Roses', but when the actual events of the title are finally coming up in this lecture after about an hour! of going into detail about the backstory that lead to this dispute (which I appreciate) and completely ridiculous and repeated comparisons to Game of Thrones (which thoroughly annoyed me!), it's so compressed, with many important details, events and people left out, that this lecture turns pretty embarrassing and renders the title kind of misleading. It's such a pity, because the lecturer is obviously good at what he's doing, knows his stuff and how to talk in an engaging manner. But by constantly referring to a fantasy show loosely based on this time period, he's really selling himself under value. A short reference at the beginning and the end would've been more than sufficient, as would've been starting his lecture with Edward III instead of King John. It simply used up too much time and consequently, we see little of how the actual Wars of the Roses started, get no explanation as to why Richard of York initially got upset with the king (and the queen and her faction, in particular), how it went back and forth and eventually escalated into open battles between the two sides. And then on top of that, Henry VI son is frequently referred to as Edmund, when his name was Edward. Sorry Sir, but I know you can do better! P.S.: Edward IV's children were not declared illegitimate because the marriage to their mother had been conducted in secrecy, but because the bishop of Bath and Wells came out with the information, that Edward had already been married to another woman when he married Elizabeth Woodville, and that this woman had still been alive when the second marriage took place. This made this marriage a bigamous one and as such nil and void, with all children stemming from it being born out of wedlock, hence being illegitimate. Furthermore, Bishop Stillington claimed to have conducted the first marriage when he was still only a priest, which he would've been. He was also part of the court already at that point, so this could actually be true. So, I'm at 1:11:07 at the moment and I'll leave it at that. After not even ten minutes of covering the actual period of the Wars of the Roses, the supposed topic of this video, and already having arrived at Richard III's reign with more GoT references lurking around the corner, I've had enough.
