I like that you could interpret the flashback as the woman not actually being his mother but just a very sweet nurse who helped him cope after he lost his hands as a kid, and his faulty memory just kind of blends the two together. Neal truly has the power to weave GG bits into lore like some kind of muppety rumplestiltskin

The hook hands is such an inspired choice, I dunno why it works so well. Edit: Rewatched the series and realized I totally forgot the Grumps actually made the character have the hook hands as part of the gag.I do love that he's cranberry coloured though.
