Please note that these kits are NOT compatible with the funnyplaying laminated housings! The mounting mechanisms are completely different and not at all compatible.

Yes, bring desaturation filter finally! Exactly my thoughts. As always great in-depth review. Thanks!
Thanks for the tips on cutting for fitting the V5 into an OEM shell I'll be doing that next week.
There are so many backlit screens to choose from I don't even know what would be the best for me...

Unless you want a specific feature or look, they all do pretty much the same thing in pretty much the same way. I have a wiki linked in the description that summarizes these kits.

For some certain games I like playing on my GBA which has the Funnyplaying ITA screen but for the majority of games I prefer this one in the video, maybe due to the higher resolution. Using the pixel grid option you will have to bump up the brightness to balance things out, which in return impacts the battery life but even so from all the screens I've tried this one is currently number 1. But it's all subjective tbh
This is awesome, really hard now to choose between this and the laminated ITA.
Great work Makho!
i’m glad you mentioned that frm can make your game 1-2 frames off, because for things like rng manipulation in pokémon that’s vital information

All these kits use frame buffers so that's gonna be an additional 1 or 2 frames on top of whatever frames the kit is already behind on.
I installed two of these kits recently. The top touch sensor never works when stuck inside the shell, only the bottom sensor works. I just cut both of them off and use button controls. Also one of my screens came with a dead pixel out of the box. Other than that the installation is much better than the FP laminated kit. The FP kit does have a better DMG color palette option than this one.
ong, cant believe you modded a space world AGB
does the artifacts are also produce with FRM on? or only with shadow objects if FRM is off?
Love you Makho ❤
Hey Makho, my R shoulder button wasn't working properly. Light presses worked every now and then. I tried with a q-tip soaked with IPA, pressed the button a bit and it worked since the shoulder button was responsive. But it lasted just a couple of days. I then tried to put more IPA inside with a syringe at the sides of the button but somehow it made it even worse and now it's working only if I hard press the R button. Should I just buy a replacement trigger or is there a way to actually clean it? For example for the DS Lite there's a way to do so (by bending the metal shield and cleaning the metal inside) and it actually worked on mine. Thank you!

If opening the button and cleaning it doesn't work, buy a pair of tacts and replace both imo (so they match, not because you can only replace the one).
Watching you hold the shell and cut like that made me nervous lol
do you know if this kit is leaves more room on the inside than funnyplaying’s laminated kit? i saw you managed to cream funnyplayings laminated kit with that usb c hdmi dock thing, and was wondering if it would be possible with this

There's no bracket behind the screen here but the LCD assembly is very thick. I'd wager they are about the same but with fewer moving pieces, this one is still gonna be a lot easier to wrangle.
this kit looks like the screen is slightly pushed back so some angles end up having edges cut off, i was wondering if the funny playing laminated kit also has that or if it doesn’t have any of the screen cut off reguardless of the angle
@makho
Жыл бұрын
Nah so with these screens, the LCD is laminated to a small piece of glass the size of the view window and then the glass spacer is laminated to the glass lens. This pushes the screen back (enough to clear the edges of the shell and allow this to work without cutting more of the shell out) but also kinda messes with the viewing angles since the LCD is so inset. FP laminates their LCDs directly to the lens and the result is more in line with what most people expect.
hey Makho, think its possible to trim the funnyplaying GBA IPS/ITA Custom Shells that fit the funnyplaying 3.2 inch IPS LCD for this mod kit? It looks similar to this shell you used but has some posts I would need to get rid of in addition to the trim
@makho

It should already fit that kit. The posts were oriented in such a way that you gotta clip one or two depending on the kit you're using anyway.

@@makho I am trying to find the best kit for an OEM shell. I read your wiki and im still confused lol. I just want it to look the best possible. Still want your recommendation!
How strong is the adhesive in these laminated kits? I was wondering how hard it would be to swap the shell if you decided to do a different build.
@makho

You should consider it permanent.
Out of curiosity, Whats in that syringe? I would grab this kit if it wasnt so power hungry.. Have to wait funnyplaying one that is integer scaled

What features would you recommend getting if trying to upgrade a stock gba screen without cutting the shell? I just want a backlight but maybe there's features worth investing in?
@makho

Backlight kits make bad investments with how often newer iterations come out with new features. Get a kit you want for the build you want. A lot of the better kits require cutting your shell or purchasing a modified shell.

@makho gotcha, appreciate the info. Will probably just get any drop in kit and hope I'm satisfied
I desoldered the touch pads, because I hate them lol other than that, I loved this backlight kit
I have a feeling you are the type to respond to comments… i have a gba that i recently did a laminated 3.0. I dont remember it doing this before the mod but since i have had to work the power switch multiple times before it will turn on. I have replaced the battery, reflowed the power switch and cleaned the power switch thoroughly… any recommendations?
@makho

The symptoms you describe are most commonly due to a dirty power switch. How did you clean it?
Do you think this ips display will fit with the HDMI Docking kit?
@makho

Yeah, probably
What is the difference between this and the 3.0 one?

Lots of little things. I make these videos and maintain a wiki that my site links to (linked in the description) to cover these sorts of questions. Do you have a specific concern?
Hey Makho this may be a stupid question, but since this queation has always bothered me here goes. Since some screen mods use phone screens or the ds lite screen why not use the touch screen to implement/control the brightness on this original launch model gba? Seems to me it would save on soldering and make mods truly drop in. I mean u are already using an adapter board to make those screen work for the gba wouldn't make more sense to add a few extra components to make the touch work?

These kits might have the front digitizer removed
@7991rellik
Жыл бұрын
@@Miroslawkrynda6477 they are removed. the dsi one is already a really tight fit as is. so, I couldn't imagine making that thicker with a digitizer and a larger board. then you would also not be able to have it laminated unless you had a custom front capacitive digitizer. but that gets into the too expensive and too much work for something that has already been solved with touch sensor/soldering to test pads.
@E-Box
Жыл бұрын
The digitizer is a separate assembly with a separate cable and would also require a dedicated controller circuit to handle all the functionality, in addition to the fact that digitizers are typically of a proprietary design specifically for the phones they were designed for, I don't know if it would be all that feasible to design and produce a brand new digitizer to retrofit an existing LCD. If you were to go that far, it may make more sense to design an entirely new LCD, though I can't say the high costs and redundancy would be worth it for a bit of functionality on a drop-in replacement that is already achieved with an insanely easy skill. If you can undo a few screws and completely reassemble a GBA, you can surely solder a few wires. Of course, I won't try to discourage you or anybody else from creating such a product and bringing it to market! 👍
Nice❤🎉
Does this kit works with the original shell?

I don't even remember what I said but if that's the case, I must have misspoke since CGS doesn't make kits that aren't integer scaled.
