Gambling is such a sad problem for Australia. My dad has had a gambling addiction for as long as I remember. He’s lost a lot of money on it. His drinking and gambling have caused us a lot of pain.
As a rugby league fan, I have been saying for years that we will look at sports betting agencies sponsorship of the NRL with the same disdain as we do with Winfield sponsoring the NRL in the 80’s .

A good number of people still smoke and cigs are still on the shelves. Why? Federal govt revenue. Even if they clean up the advertising, this issue will not go away, because there's even more money in it than coffin nails. Have a look at what is happening to Troy Stolz in Vic after trying to blow the whistle on money laundering via the casino/pokies - he now has cancer and they are literally trying to tie him up in court (and suffer the expense of that) until he dies. Govt should be protecting the people from corporations that do not act in their interests, yet all they ever do is accept large campaign donations from them in return for friendly legislation.
Time to regulate it like cigarettes. Ban gambling advertising. Pokie machines must be olive drab, no graphics, no music/chimes. Machine becomes unusable for a period of 5 mins per 30mins of use. All pokie machines must be in a bright-lit room.
What a great show, thanks so much John.
It's not just a tax on the stupid, gamblers are addicts whose families suffer with them, governments know this and shouldn't be running their states on gambling taxes.
I’m a gambling addict who is always broke I bet on sports I’m now closing all my accounts and focusing on 2023 try and make it a good year no point in crying about what I done jusr move forward I also play pokies and can tell you they are awful always lose if you play these

The biggest mistake that was ever made in gambling was allowing people to do it via an APP by entering your CC and set up an account. This is only the beginning of the end for some people. Horrible idea.

Great show.
The most insidious thing about pokies has to be their 85% or better payout rate, at first that seems good for punters, they can't lose too much too quickly, but it means people *feel* like they're winning while they allow themselves to be slowly drained of cash.

I don’t give a damn about the job losses- A they can find another and B not sure how great the job would be considering you would be witnessing pure misery everyday at work. Any form of gambling should only be allowed at casinos. A they are harder to get to whilst all clubs and pubs are specially located in sweet suburbia. I hope that anyone who profits on the misery of others (I do not agree with the notion of you’re an adult make better choices. Considering how they make the pokies, to get you as addicted as they can) that these sickos pay every bit of karma possible, might have to wait till death but it will come for them. Finally good luck to anyone suffering, please get help and self exclude.
If sirens went off every time people lost money on Slot Machines (Pokies)... You'd be too terrified to ever leave your cellars. No one is going alter the marketing of these machines for the good of the consumer.

4:12 "But that includes people who don't lose anything because they don't gamble at all." Anyone with any knowledge of stats whatsoever will be annoyed by such a ridiculous statement/measure. If you want to know the average losses of gamblers, you do not, for some bizarre reason, include non-losses from non-gamblers. That would only be included if you were asking about losses for the entire population, which would be a stupid thing to measure when you can look at the proportion who gamble and then what gamblers lose.
I want the pokies limited to the casinos alone.
They need to cap them at one dollar per spin would help a lot of people and can't lose so much so quickly unfortunately the the clubs lobby and the government wouldn't have a bar if it they would lose too much revenue greedy buggers
I work in he Bar/Gaming attendant industry for 25 years + , In my experience You can't just pull all pokies from Australia, So much money for the government and a lot of people will lose there job's. there is a few way's it can be limited. 1.Wlimit 2. Is the government has to take over, Which is a loss of privacy, People that want to play the pokies have to apply like a passport, the government has to go thru all your in and out going money ( like a home loan ) and devise a credit card ( like the credit card doll payments ) with a amount which is deposable income and set up a credit card that can be used for buying acholic , cigarettes and Pokies (like a set amount weekly, fortnightly or monthly) the big down fall of all this Australia will be a nanny country, we can be monitored 24/7 ( now this will work but there is a lot that can go wrong and in my experience people will not stand for it )

There's stuff all jobs in this "industry" unless you count the organised crime that uses them for money laundering.
@PinataOblongata

You don't need an apostrophe to pluralise something. It's just jobs and ways, not job's and way's. You only use an apostrophe for ownership or contraction. Also, there shouldn't be any jobs in this industry, just like there shouldn't be any jobs in coal or gas or making cigarettes or any other obvious social ill that is continually allowed on bs "jobs" excuses. No one needs it, it's only bad for people, except a tiny few making mega profits of people's misery at the top. The idea the state needs the revenue and can't replace it with something else, such as adequate taxation of the rich and multi-nationals, is laughable.

You can just pull all the pokies. Money that was destined for the pokies would now go into the economy generating new jobs elsewhere. Less domestic violence, more productive society, harder to launder money. It's kinda like saying illicit drug use employees thousands of drug dealers. It's a crazy argument.
Ponies and gambling is getting worse, my mother and her friend just left this morning for the casino this morning, she has already gone through 2 million dollars from her inheratence
I have a better idea just ban pokies in all pubs and hotels and just confine them to dedicated gambling spaces i.e. casinos . All these so called experts solutions like cashless, less jackpots are all a Band-Aid approach. Unfortunately they won’t because of the amount of tax revenue generated by state governments and the wealthy lobbyists pretending to try and reverse the problems they created in the first place.
I've been learning how to gamble for a number of years, it is an essential life skill because it is fundamentally to participate in an event over time with high degree of uncertainty and try to walk away with a positive pay off. So this applies to marriages, careers, and investment decision making. The first part of the answer is to have a stop loss. If you play you will lose, how much is up to the stop loss you set. It's a lot more complicated than that of course, but it's a good start
40% and 31% of men and women gamble?
Gambling is more volatile then any substance abuse when it comes to funds.

Meanwhile they banned legal regulated online poker (actual poker) with the Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill. Upside-down gambling agendas supported by the Australian government and backed by the gambling/gaming/pokies industry. Of all forms of gambling, pokies have always been the worst, most depressing, and directly target "problem gamblers", this is hardly news.
This information was available 12 years ago in America and before hand Cherokee Chief isn't MANKILLER AND 30 ACRES OF YELLOW CAKE URANIUM IS HER ONLY LAGIT LEGACY FOR CASINO GAMES THAT TAKE 80 TO 90..... DRUG LAUNDERING OR ENERGY MANIPULATION?

Pokie machines are a joke, boring. I never found the appeal. You might as well substitute it for online gaming...you can definitely find your addiction here...and at least it won’t rob you bank account.

They do not misunderstand their chances of winning. The machines should be paying around $48K per day. $47K if you are unlucky.

@@Michelle_Emm i wouldn't consider $50k over the median "just a bit above" it basically a third persons wages, that being said i think even $136k at the median income is more than most couples would make assuming they both work full-time id say $110k is alot more realistic, of corse alot of people do infact earn $182k and above which is why the median income of $136k is often quite a bit higher than what most people earn at $110k
