Gambling Addiction

With the advent of casinos in most major centres, and the relatively recent phenomenon of online gambling, a quietly insidious poison is edging its way into the psyches of an increasing number of families: problem gambling. Family courts are seeing more and more cases where a spouse's gambling addiction has led to the financial and emotional ruin of the family unit. Why do some people develop addictive personalities? How do gambling addictions develop, and what can be done to prevent and treat them?
Guests:
Dr. Richard Wood - Psychologist
Dr Richard Wood is a psychologist who, for the last 18 years, has been studying the causes of problem gambling and how it can be prevented. Dr Wood also developed, and now manages, GamTalk a free online support service for people with gambling related issues, to get information and discuss their problems anonymously with others who are going through the same experiences.
Chris Parlow - Gambling Addiction Story
Chris Parlow is a pathological gambling addict whose illness is in remission. Chris now speaks on the illness of gambling addiction and the possibilities for treatment and recovery. The former president of the United Steelworkers Union in Manitoba, Chris struggled with his compulsive gambling and depression for over twenty years in secret. As his compulsion intensified, he began to have trouble paying his bills, eventually declaring bankruptcy, losing all of his possessions and severing all his relationship ties. This culminated when he bet and lost the last eighteen dollars he had and attempted to commit suicide. After this failed suicide attempt, Chris began his recovery at the Parkwood Treatment Centre run by the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba.
Chris has been published in and interviewed by newspapers such as the New Westminster Leader, the Winnipeg Free Press and the Thompson Citizen about his struggle with gambling addiction, and continues to speak to media on the need to reduce the stigma, consequences and risks associated with the illness.

One time I won $800 at the casino. I knew I should go home. However I told myself " hey let me play just $100 of this. Who knows, maybe I'll turn a good night into a great night. If I lose, who cares, I can then leave with a really good $700. However after losing the $100, now I say to myself " ehhh I couldddd try just $100 more. If I lose that I'll leave with that remaining $600. Still a heckuva day right? " Well next thing I know I'm down to $300 and my thought process changes to " omg I can't leave with a measley $300 when I had a really nice $800 three hours ago!!! I absolutely HAVE to get that $500 back!!! Then I'll be back to $800 and THIS TIME I'll leave ( supposedly ) " Down to $200, down to $100, down to $20. Need gas but say screw it, down to $0. Now I want to puke and/or kick myself in the nuts. Mentally exhausted, stressed out, sickening feeling as I have a walk of shame to my car 😢😭😡🤬🤮

Then I scrounge for coins in my pocket and car and stop at a gas station or convenience store to purchase a 1 or 2$ scratch ticket . Thanks for sharing .

You know, a gambling addict would never realize WHY a casino can stay in business. They don’t draw money up out of thin air… it’s made from the blood sweat and tears of addicts. And a true addict does not realize that the longer you stay in a casino, the more you will lose over time.

When I was a child, my dad ( gambling addict ) took me and my brothers to casinos, bingo halls, etc. We had to stand outside of the rope, where the gambling machines were. At bingo, he even let me dob the cards as a 10 - 11 year old. It was a different time back then and I think he knew the owner. So they let me do that. Anyway, putting a naive, impressionable, easily manipulated child in that environment is hideous. Two of us three brothers became massive gambling addicts, as soon as we were of age. Not a coincidence obviously. I have a ton of debt right now and it makes me sick. Wish he had waited for mom to come home from work, then go gamble by himself. Leave us kids out of it. What a horrible addiction. Absolutely financial obliterating, stressful, depressing, life destroying illness 😭

Gambling starts like most minor bad habits. Its severity happens slow. Like just drinking beers with friends and then someday find yourself drinking alone one time and you just dont take much notice. Months years later you drinking regularly byyourself to cope with things like anxiety and looneliness. Gambling seems harmless first and for most it is. But I wanted to find a system rhat works in time. I was after getting an edge and winning longterm. There is so many videos and forums about different systems and those with gambling problems surely already now. THERE IS NO LONGTERM UNBREAKABLE SYSTEM THAT GIVES YOU WINNING FOREVER. The games are created to make gamblers loose. The deeper you dig into this and the more experience and knowledge you get the more dangerous it can be when you think you are UNIQUE and can get an edge. THERE IS NO SYSTEM THAT WORKS FOREVER. Forget about an lasting edge.

Quitting gambling is hard. I’d say the gambling addict needs to have all access to money taken away Indefinitely. And given a small allowance every week or month to spend on necessities. They can slowly over the years be given more access to their money, but supervised to make sure they don’t gamble it. At the first sight of them gambling it you start from square one of no access. This only works if they want to do it. If they don’t then they don’t want to quit gambling and you should leave them. I don’t think a gambling addiction can be cured. Just like I don’t think a drug addiction can be cured. Just controlled. This is an extreme solution. But you need an extreme solution for an extreme addiction.
