☘️ Happy St. Patrick's Day! ☘️
On January 15, 2024, ‪@jerrymartin79‬ and I were being musical tourists in and around Galway, Ireland, and both got to play the organ at Galway Cathedral. Since Jerry is a native of Ireland and had played there before, his friend and fellow organist, Mark Keane, introduced me to the instrument there for the first time, and after a bit of my own improvisation on an Irish hymn and some film music, it was decided that I would play the Irish pub/folk song, "Galway Girl," and simultaneously get us kicked out of this Catholic cathedral for such blatant sacrilege. What happened instead was a spontaneous captive audience of other tourists wandering around in the cathedral stopping to listen, and even applauding, to our surprise!
The beginning also features a candid moment caught on my Zoom audio recorder of the three of us discussing what will happen when we play this pub song in church, and we accept the fate that I would get us kicked out.
This video is a true "trifecta" of Galway, possibly even the first time "Galway Girl" has been played on the organ in Galway Cathedral in Galway, Ireland, and because I'm a hockey fan, this is now an official pipe organ HAT TRICK -- 3 points in one game by the same player, or in this case, 3 Galways at once -- and we were all so lucky that lightning did not strike us down for this blasphemy!!
