Gallium would be even better if it wasn't so messy.

You should try the singing crystal experiment, make some gallium crystals then out them in how water and you will here screeching as the Crystal structure breaks down.

Nobody seems to be mentioning another liquid metal which is an alloy of two reactive alkali metals called NaK (sodium-potassium) which is highly reactive towards water!

Tom! How/what do you store your mildly radioactive stuff in? I'm asking because I'd like to get into collecting radioactive stuff but I'm having troubles finding proper shielding for stuff like tritium and orange Fiestaware.

I love gallium except for the fact that it oxidizes very quickly to this really ugly gray and black crust.

Did you try adding a little bit of dilute sulfuric acid? The sulfuric acid will make the gallium bead up. Also, you can add a small amount of aluminum foil and then add water. Then the aluminum gets amalgamated by the gallium and reacts with water to get aluminum hydroxide and hydrogen. The cleaner gallium falls on the bottom.

I alloyed gallium and indium to make a liquid alloy with a melting point of 15 degrees Celsius(59 degrees Fahrenheit). I can't unalloy it. I might get more gallium in the future. I wish I could get a whole laboratory.

Me 10 years in the future: 6 kg of galinstan and 10 kg of gallium. An entire laboratory. other person: It's so heavy. Metal so hheavvvy.. Me: Do you even lift?! XD hahahaha! It's funny. It's funny because it's heavy even though it's a tiny volume of metal(barely a few liters).

Nope, actually he got the "Lecoq" right, pronounciation wise. But "de" is pronounced more like "duh" than "day", the french "e" is usually pronounced like the u in butter, but with the lips more closed (not sure I'm being clear) [except when it's at the end of a word, where it's "silent"]. The last part of his name would be "Bwahbowdran" with the final "an" pronounced like in the word anger. Source : I'm French.

    Is Gallium a mineral?

  • @Anti-proton

Nope, it's metal. It is always found (naturally) in minerals, however. It is created as a byproduct of mining other things.

To answer your question: Wood's metal is an alloy comprised of: bismuth, lead, tin, and cadmium Field's metal is an alloy comprised of: bismuth, indium, and tin Wood's metal is definitely the one to avoid, as it has both lead and cadmium. Field's metal is much safer as bismuth, indium, and tin are all pretty nontoxic. Galinstan is another good one, made of gallium, indium, and tin. It is both safe to play with, and is liquid at room temperature.

I wonder if field's metal can alloy with gallium. It would make galinstan + bismuth. Galinstanbiz(gallium indium tin bismuth alloy, GaInSnBi).
