TRANSCRIPT: ALEX: Hello! I'm at Gallaudet University! For what? Bison Tank! Convo and GIEI, Gallaudet Innovation & Entrepreneurship Institute partnered up to make this competition happen! What is this competition all about? Many different student teams come up with new business ideas that they pitch to a group of judges. The judges will evaluate and screen the best ideas and appoint a winner! ALEX: You know hair is important but you don't always to go to the salon. I wish there was an app for it. FEMALE: I get that totally! I am working on it and developing an app that brings me to you to deliver a blow-out that is done in 20 minutes! Anywhere, wherever you are! Nifty, huh? ALEX: Oooh, nice! What a great idea. Want to see her story? Here you go: BLOW OUT TOGO: Growing up, I had white hair streak in the front. People, children have made fun of me. I recall my stylist, Carl, once told me your white streak is what makes you, you. I thought everyone is beautiful. So, I decided to establish a small salon. I love what I do. Every single day, I get to blow dry, cut and color hair. One day, a woman needed help with styling her hair on a Saturday. So, I went to her home and styled her hair. It took me only 20 minutes. Aha. Why not I do this via mobile? Any place, any time. Long day? Going on a date? Know what? Pick up your phone, and click. ALEX: You know how Gallaudet has its Freshman traditions such as Bald Day? Before you shave, you usually color your hair. Right? But, the dorms at Gallaudet do not allow coloring hair. What does that mean? Where can you dye your hair? BISON SALON & SPA: I want to establish Bison Salon & Spa. It can provide on-campus place where you can color and cut your hair or your nails done. These services will be offered to our students, faculty, and staff. ALEX: Nice. See more of her story here: BISON SALON & SPA: Last year while I was driving, a car crashed into my car. After that, I was confused. I entered Gallaudet and still struggled with extreme pain and anxiety. Where was a place where I could relax and take care of myself? There are none. I thought to myself... there are other people here who also experience stress and anxiety with their classwork and more. That's why I wanted to establish Salon & Spa here at Gallaudet University! So that we can all take care of ourselves. ALEX: Plenty of room in my pockets, right?! SUPERPOCKETS: Does everyone all have that? We have a solution! Super Pockets! ALEX: Cool! Super Pockets! See more about that here: SUPERPOCKETS: I was born in Colombia and moved to Long Island, NY at 4 years old. I was born and raised in Dominican Republic and moved to New York at 9 years old. My mother and her mother were both single and met each other by chance. They both realized that they had deaf daughters. That was us. We have always brainstormed ideas. Remember one time, we had an idea about pockets. See the Pop-socket on the phone? Women's pockets tend to be small and things don't fit. So we decided to change that. ALEX: I'm here on Gallaudet campus doing things...and I'm hungry...and want to drink coffee. Where can I go and support student-run business? Where can I find it? DREAM CAFE: Come visit Dream Cafe! It's a student-run business to be established at LLRH6 (Living and Learning Residence Hall 6) a new dorm here on campus. Gallaudet Food Services provides only one place. Where else can you find? We want to establish a healthy food place which provide options such as vegan and gluten-free, made from scratch. ALEX: Nice! Wow. Curious to learn more information about that? See here: DREAM CAFE: Growing up, my mom always told me that she dreamed to open her own bakery. For 5 years, I've worked in the food industry. Students come into Gallaudet thinking there are many food options, only to find one option, Bon Appetit. Only one? We need more! With the food options, where is the student-run place? That's why we want to establish a student-run place for students to study, socialize, and hang out. Now, we have an opportunity to reach our dreams. ALEX: My house is deprived of artwork. I want to hang up Deaf art, but where is the information about Deaf artists? Where can I buy? FEEL: FEEL Expressions is a multimedia company incorporating a magazine spotlighting Deaf artists and an online marketplace where you can buy and support Deaf artists' work. ALEX: Nice! Let's learn more about this: FEEL: When I came to Gallaudet, I noticed that the art department and theater department were on the opposite sides of the campus not working together lacking funding and resources. In the center of culture is art. How do we bring together the Deaf community? Through art. Here on campus, is art respected, valued, and appreciated? Not at all. Chuck Baird, a famous Deaf artist, has passed away and won't be making art again. Is that how we respect and value his work? Now, it's time to set-up a magazine spotlighting Deaf art. People who read it will appreciate and understand the diverse experiences within the Deaf community through art. ALEX: I'm hungry and I live on the eighth floor of Clerc Dorm. I have 100 credit on my meal plan, what can I do? MUNXE: I have a solution for you and everyone else, too. You can order via MunXe. What's that? It's almost like Uber Eats, but with perk of accepting (Gallaudet’s) meal plan. ALEX: Nice! Learn more about that: MUNXE: I was born in northern Minnesota. I was born in the south of Minnesota. I'm a second generation business owner. I'm a third-generation business owner. We have known each other since we were 2 years old. Our parents met at a camp for deaf kids with hearing families. Looking back, during my freshman year I had a situation where I felt conflicted. I was doing homework late until around 11:30p. Rathskellar closes at midnight. Unsure if you should go to Rathskellar or finish your essay? What to do? I used to be a student-athlete playing on the basketball team. I often find myself really hungry. Having conflicts in my schedule which was not flexible. Finding myself really hungry. All students need to eat. I want to order pizza. Hmm. Chicken. That's how we come up with that idea. What if someone brought food to you? An on-campus food delivery service never done before! Thus, MunXe is initiating that. ALEX: Now what? Bison Tank is starting now in Ole Jim. Everyone is mingling. Many of Gallaudet's staff, professors, plus many different deaf business owners. They are here to network, mingle, and enjoy refreshments and drinks. Also, to see which student has the best pitch. The best business idea. I gotta show you a really cool cake. See here, there are different logos concepts. The students developed them with Convo's Creative team's consultation finalizing in those logos. Nice, beautiful logos. Of course! Deaf people must have extra bass with the music. I can feel it. This is DJ Pulse. His name is Henry. Our esteemed judges will score the contestants based on their ability to pitch and present their ideas. [Scenes of Bison Tank shows] Hey! Do this with me. Yes, that has been a journey. We give options of ordering through meal plan. We also focus on on-campus delivery. CEO of Feel magazine. Feel Expressions. That spark. What is that pain... Click. Show up, get a blowout in 20-30 minutes. That's all. I have a very simple question, too. How often do you do Bobbi's hair? How often? Humbling. Before and after. Got it. The new dorm on campus has a lot of space. What to do with space there? See? Do you know of a place where you can go to relax and take care of yourself? Stuck. You don't have enough massage therapists to do work for you. ALEX: That was six different business pitches trying to win. The judges asked tough questions. Plus, they (judges) gave them good feedbacks. Now It's judgment time. All the judges went to sum up all the final scores. The top winner who will receive $2,500 prize. There will be $500 for fans' favorite along with prizes for second and third places. We shall see what happens. Ready? Get ready. First, there is the Crowd's Favorite. Then, the third place and the second place. First place will be revealed after. I have to emphasize it was close. Yes. ALEX: Now, they just revealed the fans' favorite: MunXe is the fan's favorite! ALEX: The third place goes to... Feel Expressions. $1,000. $1,000. Thank you! ALEX: Blowout to go nabs the second place. $1,500 for the second place prize. ALEX: First place....... The first place goes to the Dream Cafe! I have dreamt about opening a coffee shop for a long time. Now, I'm considering a minor in Business Administration. So, that’s nice! JARROD: My heart. I have a big heart and truly want to contribute back to single mothers. I'd like to give an award to one thousand dollars to give back to Super Pockets. Please come over, Super Pockets. JARROD: You two have an amazing idea. But, don’t stop here. Yes, you are right. BOBBI: President's Community Experience Award. ALEX: Dream Cafe won another award: President's Community Award given to who they felt has the most positive impact on Gallaudet's community. They have selected Dream Cafe to win another $1,500 in addition to what they have won. Wow! Such a big honor for them. BOBBI: They brought their vision to a space that we already have and wasn't being used well. ALEX: That was the Bison Tank competition! It was truly great to see us come together to socialize, watch students present about their innovations. Having the judges evaluate and appoint the winners. In sum, it was truly a great job done by Convo and Gallaudet Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institution. It was their partnership that made this event happen. The community indeed benefited from this. Now, we look forward to seeing some business being established out there. Maybe you will become their customers someday!

Really loved this... and writing incensed today (I readily admit) at a Pterror-Dactalyst Un-Precedented Administration which, not two weeks after threatening to cut Federal funding for colleges which supposedly inhibit the speech of his college conservative supporters, has decided to cut the FULL Federal funding for Gallaudet, our country’s premier University for the Deaf - and an example of education that has inspired communities all over the world - on the grounds, apparently, that the Deaf have no speech or communication OF ANY SORT, whatsoever, political or not, worth supporting. As Ms Betsy DeVos told Congress today - her own family personally benefiting from tax breaks well exceeding what Gallaudet would annually receive - “it was a difficult decision.” Have you ever seen Ms DeVos on your campus? You should invite her to have a “say so” in person. I’m still digesting this, and I am angry... and I have difficulty (to date) writing about my own speech issue diagnosed as selective mutism (classified as an “anxiety disorder” but not related to hearing loss, in my particular case) and the whirlwind of associations I have with Gallaudet, going back to 1990 when I lived in DC and ever-present since. I’ve only a poem. “A sketch...” The best I can do waiting for a ride and smoking an angry cigarette.. but I know people will, in the fullness of time, read this comment. But this is an administrative and Presidential disgrace that needs to to be seeing it, as the saying goes, with their own lionize 🦁 It’s just business, cutting budgets.... especially for people who don’t cry out loud? I beg to differ. Watch this Bison, bo’suns.... mark it well... ⛩ BISOU ཁ་ཁུ་སིམ་པོ། NDOG ⛩ Gallaudet, of Corsair course ! I would not write another (hoarse For making recommends, but mine To say now, friends: “your blind To shut now, ‘gainst the Tom You must have shut your om- Nivarious eyes to”) rec musical .. Guy can sign, too.. Lhassa-Ab -Sacked Expressionist, Sensical, Doctor... if at times, Abstreussical...
