GALLAGHER BLIMP
Ғылым және технология
This pedal powered helium blimp was built for the comedian Gallagher way back in the 70's or 80's. He used to fly it inside huge arenas. A friend of mine and balloon enthusiast, Bill Arras, located it and bought it, so we went out to fly it one day.

Have you ever thought about adding a 10-speed gearbox so the pilot would not have to pedal as hard?
My great grandfather had a patent on the same thing back in 1888. It was filled with hydrogen then, not helium. Nobody knew what happened to it, except back then, his enemies tried to destroy his attempts.

Do you have any paperwork or pictures still?

No. Aside from a few newspaper articles from the era, everything was destroyed. We can't even find out where he's buried. @@connordoody1812
I want one!
Wow, a little larger with a balloonette to control buoyancy and 20 or 30 hp and I would want one..
you would think gallagher would have a watermellon themed blimp, rather than just a generic white one
That actually looks like a lot of fun! Though I would imagine the helium would start to get expensive...
Wonderful. Take good care of it.
Yuk Yuk! I’m a proud Level IV Fart Master!
what an excercise, looks worth the thrill.
Mmmm, I am imagining a lawn chair, a bunch of balloons, a good pellet gun, and one of those RC thruster motors.
Hah. That is Gallagher's old balloon ship. Apparently, it did not work that great. Must have been too windy.

Inside a giant stadium, where there was no wind to contend with, it was a different beast altogether.
Solar panel, electric motor and rigid ( carbon fiber) envelope shaped as an airfoil and you’ve got something.
i wonder if you attached a preheater to it you could just bypass the need for any kind of vertical controls, or ballast tanks.
Pretty cool way to get around town. Also very safe.

It is not safe. Winds are dangerous and buoyancy errors might suck somebody in the sky.
Wonderful....I need one for me like this...can you help me to prepare one
How about adding a heated air balloon section - a small gas camping ring might do for ascents
Awsome
any more videos on this?
Very slow and very tiring but beautiful.
A lithium battery and an ebike pedal motor and you’re cruising.
It looks to be over built. Is all that structure really needed to support one person?
Payload?
You could add some gas propulsion, too. Beans and pea soup.
I thought Gallagher's blimp was painted like a watermelon.
Nice to see the old ship back in action, suspect they'd even turn the HVAC off indoors to find calm air. Good work!
Why not add a light weight gearbox to reduce effort for the pilot?
what about electric motor to propel it?

The whole idea was to make a pedal powered blimp...
Although with a little motor in addition
That propeller is doing absolutely nothing.
IS THIS THE SAME HUMAN-POWERED BLIMP I SAW ON THE PLAYA AT "BURNING MAN 2011" ??
too much weight the propeller isn't going at a fast enough rate to make the balloon go higher it needs a motor or more helium
Helium in this one? A hydrogen blimp would be half the size. Less cross section. With all the air vacuumed out of the cell the hydrogen wont explode just burn.
Leo Gallagher did not have a blimp but his younger brother Ron Gallagher did. Now Leo does have the sledge-o-matic and both of them are comedians this younger brother was billed as Gallagher Too or two. Leo stopped him with a lawyer because just think someone get hit by a something at your brother’s show and sues you for it. Leo has payed out hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages from his own shows he doesn’t need is brother helping.
My trike has electric pedals, try that on this blimp and it may truly work \(°•°)\
Hi
Now that's cool! Too bad there's no way to smash watermelons and ketchup bottles while riding.
An air bike
"?" Where does GALLAGHER COME IN? ???
I want one!!
