I bought this 50 years old Rockwell hardness tester for cheap and in this video I present you the months long process of getting it back to working order.
This machine is awesome. It weights like an anvil, over 80kg (176lbs) and the way it works is fascinating, with mirrors, translucent scales and old style light bulbs to amplify the distance the diamond cone is pushed into the material and enable down to 0.1 HRC measurements.
This being a well known tool I was able to find manuals:
drive.google.com/file/d/1kSXL...
And useful guides about the calibration process:
capodieciivo.blogspot.com/201...
Special tanks to Ivo, who wrote the blog above and suggested where to find replacement parts.
Although this restoration wasn't cheap considering all parts and tools I had to order at the end it still was way cheaper than buying a new one. Less than half the price of a modern Grizzly hardness tester.
Find some stuff I use for my projects in this amazon storefront:

Ciao grandissimo bel video non vedo l'ora di sapere la durezza dei tuoi coltelli. Anche io ne ho uno ma non lo so usare molto bene proprio per questo ti volevo chiedere un tuo contatto così che se avevi tempo magari ci potevamo confrontare. Io non so di dove sei se passi per Ancona ti offro un pranzo 😂

This is an absolute gem to have. congrats on everything going smooth with the restoration and calibration.
What an amazing restoration! And, you now can accurately test the hardness of your builds. You did a wonderful job bringing an old machine back to life and giving it a chance to help you. You are truly gifted and I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos. Thank you for posting this one and have a Blessed weekend.
again, one of the most talented people on the internet.... blackbeard, just brilliant...i have no clue what you did but your videos are always so well produced and your restorations are amazing....
Love your passion to restore these machines to their formal glory. Thank you for sharing and educating us how to approach these fun projects. Deep respect! ✊🏼🙌🏼😊
I know it's not the popular opinion regarding restoration videos, but I wish you would speak more often. I love the sound of your voice.
I Have watched you add equipment piece by piece over the years. I really enjoy these restoration’s.
What a cool machine! I hear a lot about Rockwell scales but seeing it in practice is really something else - that light-up analog display is Impeccable. Well done on the restoration!

I've seen similar ones in old machine shop vids here on yt but yeah this was awesome
I appreciate how you always break down your videos with descriptions on each segment. Very nice touch
I love when you make videos. It's so fun to watch! I love your new hardness tester! You did an excellent job restoring it! ☺️
Your restoration videos fascinate me for the simple fact that you can take these machines completely apart and actually get them back together again! LoL. I'd have parts everywhere. Great video!
It was good seeing a Rockwell testing machine and the overview of how it works. Thanks for the video on this neat piece of shop kit!
Absolutely interesting to watch you restore this machine. Happy for your success in getting it ready for your future projects 👍
Amazing job restoring the hardness tester and calibrating it for accuracy. Great work.
That tester wasn't as complicated as I thought it would be good job 👍
Awesome tool. Enjoy and congrats!
Very beautiful restore! I also really enjoy restoring old tools
wow good restore😯👍
I really wish this video was a lot longer. I feel like I missed most of the restoration of this piece. Great video either way!
Another great restoration/video! Turned it amazing add always! Thanks again for sharing!
So you are from Italia !! ;) Love your old tools restauration vidéos. Amazing machines i didn't expect to exist ^^
That's a nice thing to have, was wondering that you didn't get such tester earlier, for all your knife-making! Great job! 👍
Oh man. I would absolutely love to find one of these for cheap, so I could fix it up. Making knives, and not having a hardness tester makes it so much more difficult It adds much more guess work than I'd like.
cool we are studying this in the technical course of mechanics, (Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Santa Catarina), and it is interesting to know how to restore sophisticated equipment
Great restoration but just a little short for me as I like to see your work. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
...LOOKIN' GOOD, NICE WORK...
I googled the company from here in the states and no joke, those look top notch. Great work as always.
You do like your challenges, interesting project,I’ve never seen one myself, you know what to do and how to do it.just carry on and keep doing what your thinking.👍👍👍😎😎😎
Awesome. I would love to have one of these. *adds yet another piece of equipment to his wish list*...

Fine work!
That was fun and informative thank you
Really enjoy your videos. I always learn something new
I had the same problem. I bought Rockwell Tester for a very good price but without weight. In fact after service and with this missing weight it cost me almost the same price as a new one (lol).. However I've heard that the new Rockwell Testers are not as well made as the old one. Nice work Bud! And it's very cool you calibrate it by yourself!
Would love to see you test some blades and stuff you have lying around!
Galileo. Magnifico.
Another great restoration, professional work,i just think than you need a sandblasting machine in your shop,is gonna make much more easy on your projects,👍🏻
Fantastic work! Thanks for sharing your video.
Very interesting piece of equipment. 👍🏻👍🏻
Great Job Sir. Very nice.
Finally. Don't understand at all how someone can make a knives for years testing blades on glass bottles
🇧🇷 great. you seem difficult to keep up with. so many meaningful projects going on. Thanks
Very nice work !! This will become a very useful tool in your shop as well !! EXCELLENT work !!
Love to see your videos. Regards from Bolivia
beautiful!
Love this!!
Amazing video :)
Cane carino. Mi piace questo canale. Grazie
Useful tool
Wow great restoration! I've been waiting for a video like this. I'm in the States and purchased one of these a few years ago, only to see there was very little literature on the machine to be found, much less instructions on its uses. It appears the link to the manual in the description no longer works. Where did you find the manual for this machine? So awesome. Here in the State the Wilson Rockwell Hardness Tester seems to be the most common. Thank you for sharing this project and knowledge.
This is amazing. This machine is just awesome !!! I wish i could get one one day ! I was wondering when you would finally get a way to test your blades in a very accurate way... Files are good, but they can be very inaccurate if dull or not used properly. That's a great machine you found. I wonder how much it did cost you, but i can easily understand that you don't want to say the price

there are two of them on ebay right now, one is $1000 and another is $1500, not including the shipping.
Meus Parabéns !
Awesome, have fun with your new toy! :)
If ever a guy needed a specific tool it's him and this.
That machine is useful in the morning
Super. 😊
Any shorts coming about testing hardness of random objects? :v Cool machine!
Bravissimo
Nice!
Very nice. The stand looks kinda top heavy.
Like the cane 🐕 for reference
pretty freakin cool 👍
Amazing timing, I just bought a 2nd hand tester yesterday! The diamond indenter is missing with mine. Could you tell me where you bought your indenter (and maybe also the calibration discs)? I'm wondering if those affordable ones on amazon are any good. Thanks voor the intresting video. Cheers

Hi frm Brazil. Congratulations for your restoration work os a Italian machine. I have an old CST bench milling machine working very fine, a jewel. How do you get the instruction manual depicted on the video? Regards.
Meglio di tanti durometri moderni
