Got an S8 off a friend in 2019, replaced Screen and set it up as my main phone. Actually went back to my iPhone 8 because of the stuttery performance in apps and now got myself a Zenfone 9. I still got the S8 in the corner and marvel at it from time to time. Things like the notification led, iris scanner, 3d touch and SD slot got lost in time. The OLED is still superior to the Zf9 but system performance has come a long way since. I heard LineageOS supports it under Android 13 but the battery life is bad. Maybe I try it out for myself when I have time for it.

Coming off an S9+, it's still a contender and in some ways, better than the S23 Ultra. Expandable storage is the biggest feature I'll miss moving forward.

s20 is a far better choice imo. I did iphone 5 to s6 edge to s7 edge to s9 plus, to s20 ultra. And from my point of view the s9 plus is horrible as it slows down alot. the s20 still has expandable storage so that is the last generation with it.

@StayBlur Expandable storage, headphone jack, Iris scanner, and you can actually switch between cameras when recording at 4K 60FPS (S23 Ultra can do it at 4K 30FPS though). Not to say the S9 is entirely better than the S23 Ultra, but it does have notable features that some people will miss.

7:51 the S9+ has fast charging, or at least by name. When I connect mine to my Samsung wireless charger, it shows fast charging on the screen.

I’m back on the Galaxy S9 Plus coming back from the iPhone 14 Pro Max the camera on the 14 pro max disappointed me I was definitely expecting more from the iPhone, but sadly it just sucked. I’m more than happy being back on the S9 plus and wish I didn’t spend so much for the switch to begin with. S9 Plus still rocks even in 2023 compared to similar priced phones now.

I feel the same way. I’m on the 13 pro max and I regret it. The camera is nice until I zoom in then everything looks grainy and out of focus. I was thinking on saving up for the s9 plus or note 9 to replace it, even though it may be older, I’ll still enjoy it

As someone who only retired my S9 three days ago: hell no. I didn't realize just how slow it is until I got my Flip5 and within minutes thought "holy crap, is this how things are supposed to load?" I'm talking a factor of 10, in some cases. Take my banking app, for instance. Startup time to the login on the Flip5 is between 1 and 2 seconds. I just turned on the S9 and measured that to 21 seconds. That's a ridiculous difference. I turned off automatic app updates long ago, because they took so long and slowed the phone down so much that it was very annoying to pick the phone up and try to use it only to discover it was in the middle of updating yet another app. Instead, I would manually go start updates when putting the phone down after using it. It can't possibly be just the CPU, I'm guessing storage speed has a lot to do with it. Especially since once an app is loaded it still feels fine to use. It might still be good value compared to today's low end phones, I suppose. But it's also worth bearing in mind that it doesn't even get security updates anymore. My reason for swapping it out was that the battery is pretty much gone. At 30% the phone couldn't take more than a few minutes worth of high load before dropping to 0%. I didn't realize the perfomance issues were as bad as they were, until I experienced the new phone.

  • @danteerskine7678

@@Karlenk0 I have nothing against cheap plastic as long as they have textured back panels. With glass back, you have to slap a case on the S9 , another negative point, battery removal, if you don't have any patience, you'll end up breaking the fragile back panel. This is not a problem on polycarbonate plastic back panels There are phones with wireless charging which has plastic back panel (Nokia XR 20, Samsung Galaxy s20fe) and they're not ugly devices. However, I don't buy flagships as I prefer mid range and entry level phones and I would prefer largely a micro SD card slot instead of an in display fingerprint sensor. Entry level phones have become better for basic use and due to their low powered chipsets, they have better battery life too. I'm a basic user, so a 100 $ Android phone or a Kai os feature phone will largely cover my daily needs

Don't understand people who recommend to get phones that are not getting any updates anymore, and are not supported. Most of the people are using phones to make payments, banking etc. Personally I wouldn't buy a phone that is not supported for at least 1+ year after I get it. With means for Samsung phones anything older than S21 series don't have any sense since S20 series are on last year of security updates and won't get any android update and anything older than S20 series not getting any updates anymore, or maybe once per 6 months.

  • @hoboholer

lol if you think those secutity updates actually do much of anything in preventing things like banking apps from being spyed on, youre sadly mistaken. These phones are way better than any other device at the price point its at ~$100... Just cus youre scared of random scammers doesnt mean everyone else should be paranoid. Never been hacked and have had used phones with limited update support for years. Get off your high horse and realize people can make informed decisions to purchase a phone that is better in almost every aspect than some budget phone with maybe a year or 2 support in terms of updates.
