David Phelps is the best tenor singer ever. Bill and Gloria Gaither have written hundreds of gospel songs and hymns. Bill started a group called the Gaither vocal band (GVB) and has many of the best gospel singers in his group over the years, including David Phelps. The "choir" behind David are some of the greatest Southern Gospel voices an Anthony Burger was one of the greatest gospel pianist. He dies some tears ago. David now does mostly solo work and has his own Christmas albums. The guy with his mouth open is George Younce in my opinion has the greatest Bass voice in gospel and sang with the Cathedrals a southern Gospel quartet. He went to voice school at Baylor and is renowned as one of the greatest Tenors in the world. The piano player is Anthony Burger who unfortunately passed away at the age of 44 while having a massive heart attack while playing in the middle of one of these concerts. Thanks for doing my request on Christmas morning! I think David's O Holy Night is the best one ever and there are some great ones. Anthony Burger is the guy playing the piano (RIP). Bill and Gloria Gaither are songwriters/singers/promoters of Southern Gospel Music. This is one of their "Homecoming" concerts. Bill is a founding member of the Gaither Vocal Band. David was a member of the GVB for quite a few years and now is solo with his family. If you want some other songs by David to react to, try "No More Night" and "We Shall Behold Him". David has a Masters in musical performance from Baylor University. He chose to use his gift of singing to spread the Gosple. He started with the Gaither Vocal Band, which was created by Bill Gaither. Bill and Gloria are legends literally in the Gosple music world . They have written many famous songs. If you two are familiar at all with music of the church, you would recognize songs such as Because He Lives, and He Touched Me, Sinner Saved By Grace. Elvis Presley actually recorded He Touched Me. It was one of the very few times his manager Col Parker didn't manage to steal the songs rights and royalties from the writer, but Elvis recorded it anyway. David has children.who are also musically gifted but his Daughter Maggie Beth is probably the most talented singer. She and David do a song live called Water, which is one you definitely check out.

This video is at least 20 years old I think. David Phelps can still belt them out like this at age 53. He does have opera training but chose the gospel singer route. He is considered by many to be one of the BEST tenors singing today. Bill and Gloria Gaither have had, for decades, a renowned gospel show and David Phelps started as part of it. The man who pulled him forward when he stopped singing was Bill Gaither. One of the men sitting in choir behind David as he sang was Mark Lowrey. Mark wrote 'Mary Did You Know'.... which has become one of the most beloved Christmas songs. David is a devout Christian and when he sings these songs he is presenting his soul to God. He means EVERY word he sings here and that is part of why so many feel a rush of spirit when they listen to his songs (testimony.) So many who are truly non-religious still truly appreciate and are 'renewed in spirit' by David's singing.

This performance was in the year 2000 at the Alabama Theater in Birmingham, Alabama. The pianist was Anthony Berger. David Phelps is a classically trained tenor. His teacher tried to get him to sing opera, but David wanted to sing gospel.He studied at Baylor University. He got his start with Bill Gather's Gather Vocal Band. The performance was part of the Bill and Gloria Gather concert series.

David Phelps is from another planet! This is the only version I like a little more than Home Free's...and I'm a huge Home Fry. You've got to listen to his version of Whitney's "I Have Nothing." It will blow you away. David Phelps is another fun rabbit hole to go down. Merry CHRISTmas...!!

I totally agree with you, Home Fry to the core and go to as many concerts as I can get my husband to… David Phelps is my very favorite singer and he does not do anything that I don’t think is amazing! My best friend and I go to a Gaither’s Homecoming Event once a year. Sure wish David would be at one. And FYI, Bill and Gloria Gaither have written over 700 Gospel songs. God has surely blessed many people on that stage.

I have seen David live 11 times live now, met him and his family several times and have been to his home twice for Barn Bash events. In my opinion he is the best male vocalist on the planet and has been for the the past 25 years. And actually....it is not even close.

I never get tired of hearing this version of "O Holy Night!!" Bill and Gloria Gaither and their organization were a strong force in the Gospel venue the last 40-50 years, responsible for many writings and recording of Gospel songs and artists. They annually had these large gatherings of various Gospel musicians to celebrate Christian music. This was one of those many gatherings, I believe. Bill is the one who brings David forward at the end during the applause wearing the dark suit and deep burgundy shirt at the 5:55 mark, and Gloria is the blonde in the front row with the multi-colored striped sweater just off David's left elbow at the 4:08 mark; also the one right in front with her arm reaching across her body at 4:50 mark, and finally at 5:26. There are many other excellenct performances by David Phelps. You should definitely check out his buddy Mark Lowry in the red shirt right behind David during the applause. Ok, you asked for a background on David Phelps-here goes. David’s father wanted him to be a lawyer; but, David wanted to study music. David won his father over when he sang a solo at his school and got a standing ovation. David got that music degree and moved to Nashville. Bill and (his wife) Gloria Gaither have co-written thousands of classic Gospel songs. They formed a trio with a tenor singer back in the ’70’s. In the ’80’s Bill got three other men together and formed a contemporary Christian group called Gaither Vocal Band. In the ’90’s Bill wanted to have a “homecoming” for all the Southern Gospel groups who were famous in the ‘50’s, ‘60’s and ’70’s; so he gathered together many groups who had stopped singing and had a concert that was recorded. The VHS videos of this concert were very successful and the Gaither Homecoming has been a tradition ever since. Because of the Homecomings, the Gaither Vocal Band shifted from the Contemporary Christian genre to Southern Gospel. In 1997, Bill needed a tenor for the Gaither Vocal Band and David auditioned-the rest is history. This video is during a Gaither Homecoming Christmas concert.

I highly recommend you react to “Let Freedom Ring” with the GVB group that consists of David, Guy Penrod, Russ Taff and Bill Gaither. In my opinion that was the BEST GVB group in the history of the Vocal Band. Guy and Russ are both amazing singers in their own right. The combination of those three under Bill’s leadership was mind blowing! Note: Gaither Vocal Band has had a revolving membership since its inception. There are some 30-40 alumni who have been part of the group throughout the last three decades. After spending time in GVB, often members would move on to their own music careers. In that way, Bill Gaither has been a king maker in Christian music.

Do yourselves a favor and delve into David Phelps music!! I absolutely love his voice, his passion and his technical ability! He blesses me with each and every song that I have ever heard of his, and they are many!!! He is no doubt, one of the greatest tenors and artists in the world today!!!

You should check out David's Whitney Houston's cover song, "I Have Nothing" at age 54 and still got it. I read Whitney was a huge fan of his and wanted to do something with him, but never got the chance. He did the cover because he was a huge fan of hers as well. I don't think David has ever disappoint in any song he does. He is awesome.

The pianist was Anthony Berger. He was a great piano player of gospel music. He played for the Gaither Vocal Band for a while. He died on a cruise right after playing the piano at a concert. Bill Gaither was the man who took David's arm after the song.

David Phelps was born with his gifts of perfect pitch and his capacity for enormous breath control, and fine-tuning from Classical voice instruction. I hope your Channel might see fit to give your listeners more of David's music. He has a whole catalogue of both Christian and secular performances to choose from, many of them "Live". Bill and Gloria Gaither are gospel music legends. They host these "Homecoming" events in which lots of gospel singers some and take turns singing. Bill was the man who pulled David out during the applause. Gloria is the lady in a black, red, and gold striped top with both hands in the air near the end of the song. Bill and Gloria have written hundreds of beautiful songs that are still sung in churches worldwide. David was part of the Gaither Vocal Band, a quartet for many years. That's how he got his start. He trained for classical music in college, but then decided he wanted to sing for Lord. So he trained himself to sing conversationally to get the message across. Try more of his songs. His dad wanted him to be a doctor. He told his dad he wanted to be a singer. So his dad said ok. Then he went to college and trained as a classical singer. The people behind him were all people individual or small groups of the Gaither Vocal Band. Sadly the man who is playing the piano died suddenly of a heart attack while he was playing the piano. He was a talented pianist! I think David is the best and now I have been to several of his solo concerts !

David does have a good voice, but for this song, I prefer the Home Free version - not so much grandstanding with the piano, not so much "look at me". The beginning was lovely, aside from the piano, and perhaps I shouldn't hold that against the singer, but it is his chosen accompaniment. And if I don't watch him, I appreciate his voice more. But it just seems more like a 'performance' than the HF one does.

Considering the age of the video and the recording tech then it would likely sound different live. I can assure you hearing him in person is amazing. His sister accompanied him in other songs and has performed duets with his daughter. Lotsa his videos on KZread
