Form Analysis of 2:38 marathoner and RunnersConnect Coach @run4acozz
One of the things we often do at our retreats is a gait analysis. With this we analyze running form to dig out potential causes for injury or simple inefficiencies.
Most runners dread this, worried that their form is going to be dreadful but often it’s better than they think!
So how does one of our coaches compare to yours? Let’s break it down!
In the first video, running straight forward, we see an inefficiency in the left arm swing. With this arm swing we also see the left foot landing a little left of center.
While these are slight imbalances, in a fatigued state, the arm swing and left foot placement all become worse.
In moving to the next video we see a slight hip drop when the right leg touches down. Seeing this, the arm swing and left foot placement are likely a counterbalance to weakness in the right hip. The right hip is dropping because the stabilizers are weak.
Without addressing the strength imbalance for the hip drop, injury is a concern, but generally these imbalances are fairly minor in this case.
The last minor form inefficiency is a slightly underwhelming hip extension on the right side. Hip extension helps us to get our power and is generally less developed when running easy so that could be the case here. Still something to work on!
So what about the good?
We have a good forward lean which we want in order to stay over our center of gravity.
We also see a mid foot strike and land with a bent knee which helps distribute force through the body properly - we want to avoid landing with the leg straight or in an overstriding position.
Besides the left arm swing out and across the body a little too much, the arm carriage is generally good.
How does your form compare?
In the coming weeks we will be starting a series of posts on form, addressing the most common form issues we see in runners. Stay tuned!
