It seems they agree but Greg keeps it simple due to his target audience. This just breaks it down further with more detail. I've always understood maingaining to be finding one's maintenance level and then adjusting it up or down by 100-300 calories (up to 500 depending on your situation) based on goals/circumstances. This video basically described it how I've always understood it but calls it it a semi-myth.

As much as I like Greg, I must agree with Mike on this matter. There are cases where gaintaining isn’t going to be conducive to one’s goals of getting bigger and “jacked”. There was no way I could be 185lbs lean now if I continued to “maingain” at 152lbs. As soon as I ate at even a slight surplus I finally made progress. I also like how he’s open to both sides of the argument and supports maingaining under certain conditions instead of just flat out yelling “THERE IS NO NEED TO BULK EVER!!” Greg’s advice seems to apply mainly to those predisposed to being at a higher bodyfat and weight. Doesn’t work so well for guys who are naturally lean and skinny that are tired of being small.

If your already pretty lean say 15% body fat then you don't need to recomp and to try and do so would be difficult but at 15% you don't need to be bulking either your better of trying to stay in that range of body fat going up a % or 2 isn't a big deal but going up to much just give you more to loose later on which just means your probably also going to loose any extra muscle you may have gained as a result of "bulking"

Heck, this after the gaining weight while eating less video, I remember a time when I started working out more seriously with an intent to get muscles so went through most of the muscles in training multiple times a week and also doing running. The size and amount of the meals became massive, I had never eaten that much and especially on a daily basis. The training hunger was the type of having to eat a horse right after training. And the silly thing is I had gained weight from maybe 71 kg to 78 kg over a couple of years and not really muscle, so my weight was staying the same, muscles were growing and I was losing soft extra despite eating so a ton more. It was the dream. The other side of the coin was that the moment I wasn't training, had to recover for a week or two, eating more than little was such a chore. The daily activity level just wasn't enough to provoke proper hunger before blood sugar levels dropping. In general my body has always been somewhat lean and gaining even normal weight has been difficult, always been on the low end until recent years. Which also made it difficult to gain strength and muscularity. The ability to eat and hunger just hasn't been there for more than maintenance. Body for a runner more like. +5% without junk food in 3-6 months sounds crazy to me, 2 lbs in 9 months is much more realistic.

I think it's important we realize that "maingaining" or "gaintaining" is probably a good approach for MOST lifters cause let's be real, the vast majority of men are >15% BF and vast majority of women are >23% BF. Bulking is still fine if you're not fat but it's not absolutely necessary. However the best results for people who are already lean especially very lean or ripped is to gain some weight, especially since cutting the fat off will be quick and easy anyway. I like looking at it as giving yourself room for error in terms of ensuring you'll always have enough energy reserves to progressively overload over time.

Yeah, I assume that’s why the title specifies gaintaining “for best results”. Gaintaining is fine within a certain range, but it does have its limitations. Those limitations may not matter to the general population*, but they do to RP’s target audience of coaches and dedicated athletes. * Take an average Joe, help him lean out to 12% bodyfat, get him his newbie gains, and then tell him he can maintain that by eating reasonably well and working out 2-3 hours a week. You’re a miracle worker.

Maingaining is probably a decent approach for most people cos they're already 15+% body fat but cutting to get leaner and then bulking will be a better approach. Building muscle is a lot harder and slower process than losing fat. When you're in a muscle gaining phase and training hard you really want to maximize your results and not sell yourself short by eating barely above maintanence.

By the end of a 6-month gain phase I have to eat 800-1,000 Calories over my normal maintenance to gain a fraction of a pound per week. I just don’t have the hunger cues to eat a reasonably healthy 3,700 kcals. (For what it’s worth, it happens on the way down too, and it suuucks.)

I have been gaining weight very slowly, about a pound a a month. It's been intentional to minimize fat gain but I have definitely gotten to the point where it's uncomfortable to eat at times. You are right about setting your mind in a goal and pursuing it even when it's not fun. All the best to you!

It simply mean you don’t do dedicated bulking and cutting cycles. They’re not necessary for optimal gains. It’s only a problem if individuals are focused on staying very lean all the time and are afraid to gain weight. You can stay at 12-15 percent and make great gains and look good without worrying about it. It’s far more common for beginners to mess crap up with a dreamer bulk

I think maingaining is my only option. Because of the steroids, I gain fat very fast (all in my midsection, yeh), and it's extremely difficult to lose. What can one expect if they're overweight, never ate at a proper maintenance or bulk, never hit their newb gains, and try maingaining? I'm 27% body fat, formerly 31% body fat from recomping. Been off and on my fitness journey to where my strength is still at beginner levels, was always either in a purposeful cut or neglecting my nutrition entirely (lost and regained the same pounds of fat for years). Can I still expect decent fat loss and muscle gain? Or just more of one than the other since I'm over weight? Or can I by some miracle somehow expect accelerated muscle gain as if I was bulking since I have an excess of stored calories from fat and (maybe plenty) of newb gains to still reap from never eating at maintenance or a surplus?
