Gain-match multiple amps IDENTICALLY - With no meter or scope!?

Ойын-сауық

This method will yield you perfect results every time, and you dont even have to use a multimeter or a scope if you dont want to. It just uses splitting of the available coils in a uniform way plus simple phase inversion.

This is similar to how ac generators are phase matched when hanging up or connecting to the grid except you just use a bulb across each phase. Different way of wiring it but the ideas the same, you "tune" for a no bulb. Just as you are for no movement. Novel and simple nice one.

The only thing I've noticed by doing this is that the amps tend to run a bit hotter for some reason. So if you have them in an area that doesn't have good air flow then might not be a good idea. First off I have to say that you are absolutely brilliant sir! I have two questions though. First, do you think the Hantek PC based oscilloscope would be a good budget friendly tool to do this? It's an 2 Channel oscilloscope under $100. Secondly, is it the same process for gain matching 2 amps without the phase flip option that each power one Subwoofer? And lastly is more of a request. I know this is a bit of a lengthy explanation, but do you think it's at all possible to do a step by step tutorial? I feel like the straight forward step by step tutorial would be a great addition to your videos, and this current video can be used to reference back on for explanations. But all in all you get a solid 20 on a scale of 1-10 brother! You definitely hit the nail on the head and the ball out the park! BASS ON!!

  • @barevids

    @barevids

Enrique Lomeli Thank you for the kind words sir! Perhaps I will look to do a step by step. I also have a video planned to show people how to set clipping point without a scope of DD1. Hopefully that should be useful as well. For two amps each running one subwoofer, yes, simply wire one of each coils to one amp, and the other two coils to the other amp, so that each amp is powering both subs, but only one coil from each. Find your clip point the normal way, then flip phase on amp 2, play low volume 20hz sine, and tweak gain of amp 2 until cones are dead still. That scope would do the trick for sure, I am not often a fan of software based scopes due to lag and how they're kinda stuttery to work with. For reference, my HP scope here was £150 used and maybe the best investment I ever made!

I had a question about this!!! Very very good information I loved it! But after you match the subs and then switch the positive and negative back do you then set the gain? Or have all the gains set and then turn the volume down and then use a low voltage to phase and all that like forwards the end of the video?? I would love how to do this perfectly because then I would rather gain match rather then strapping

Thank you for sharing this. I am currently using 2 amps on 4 Subs just like you've shown in this video and I have the inputs configured as master / slave but each amplifier is individually running its own pair of subs rather than strapping the outputs together. I just assumed the amps would be pretty closely matched this way but it looks like I'm probably wrong. I will definitely try what you've shown in this video. Update: I haven't rewired the subs yet but I did check the output voltages and found a significant difference between the output of the master verses the slave amplifier. I forget exactly what it measued, but basically the slave amp always had less output than the master even when I tried swapping them around. I ended up setting the amp gains independently as close as possible and that alone made a noticeable difference.

barevids I was hoping I could still strap these amps to effectively drop the ohm load occasionally for burps, then go back to 1 ohm per amp for daily use, do you know if there's any way I could correct the issue of the slave amp running lower than the master? The controls do nothing on the slave amp so there's no way to turn the gain up or anything. It doesn't seem to matter which amp is used as master and which one is the slave, it always has lower output voltage on the slave amp. Is there anything internal that I could tweak?

Hi there. I have just finished setting up the system in my 2011 E90. The source unit is a DEH 80PRS and the amplifier is a JBL GTR 7535. There is a dilemma I have run into. When testing for max volume at the headunit, depending on where I connect, it clips at different volumes, so for the sake of argument, on the front channels it clips at 59 out of 62 on the rear it clips at 60 out of 62 and on the sub it clips at 58 out of 62. This part is fine, I just stick to 57 and plug the RCA's into the amplifier. When I hook my mini oscope to the speaker output channels, even before touching the gains, I have to turn the volume down at the headunit to 50 in order to get a clean signal. There is a switch on the amplifier that says "Low, HI1,HI2" and the manual says to use the setting at Low if using line level signal. Now the thing is on the sub channel, I don't need to touch the gain at all and the other two I need to slightly. Is the amp underpowered? Is there something I am missing? Thanks

Just a quick one, sam mentions using one amp to adjust the gain and the phase, however if the phase knob adjustment makes the movement worse straight away you need to tweak the phase on the other amp, gain is in the middle, phase is at one end of the scale so in theory you can adjust gain up or down, but the phase may need to move back or forward, so you need to use one amp for back, and the other for forward and see which works best 👍🏼

This is a great method, but with one amp per coil with a small phase difference in each coil this small difference between the coil increase the voice coil heat. So always match perfect the gain with multimeter :P Sorry for my bad english.

Barevids, absolutely love the videos! I have a question myself. Currently running 3 dvc d4 subs at .67 getting split on strapped 5ks and obv my amp protects near my max volume bcuz of how low my ohm load .....I've also tried to run 3 coils per amp, but got crazy impedence rise. I tried multiple different ways to wire these none of which Im happy with. Seems the most I can clamp from two 5ks is 3100w, which doesn't seem right to me. Rn all my coils are wired individually with 12g all ran to the same box terminal then my strapped amps attach to the box.....I was wondering what would happen if I unstrapped them, and ran both amps to a distro block and ran my speaker wires to the distro?

I have a question, you say in one video that you should set gains with subs connected to amp for proper load on amplifier... but if I'm running 2 amps, 2 dvc subs split down the middle, i.e. left coils on amp 1 and right coils an amp 2, how would I properly set the gains on each amp with speakers hooked up and not hurt the speakers? I do have a o-scope and multimeter, so I assume I wouldn't have the speakers connected to set gains, just check the phase after I set the gains.... hope I'm asking this right.

So I can do exactly the same with two 1 ohm DVC subs and two amps? (Gladen RC 3200c1 which run stable on 0,5 ohms) ? That's amazing!

Did it seem better with 2 amplifiers? I'm planning on doing the same. Got 2 Kicker KXA1600.1 for one sub.

@BassHead253 it depends on the subwoofer ohm rating .

yo! this video is very clever! nice work. I have a stereo amplifier (which you sold me woop,) is the phase generally more reliable in a stereo amp? Also if you bridge a stereo amp to mono driving 2 subwoofers can you eradicate these issues?

Any properly designed and built stereo amplifier will have both its channels in perfect phase :) If driving subwoofers with a stereo amp, yes you should generally always bridge it so that the woofers both see a uniform mono source. What amp was it exactly buddy?

lanzar opti 500x2 ;) and perfect, mono is how I've done it. Isobaric 2 15" Hertz subs. Am over the moon with it. Are you into home audio amplifiers? Hifi in particular. i've heard you mention Linn before and I got to see some guts yesterday

Makes complete sense, GREAT TIP!! It may be a wacky question, but could you do this with two different brand amps if you did things this way?

Alright I went ahead and gain matched one coil per sub wired to each amp. I must say it was fun doing this. I will be doing a video response to your video as well as a barevids shout out on my channel. Peace and Bass

Great video I know what I'm doing tomorrow! I have 2 JBL club A monoblocks strapped on my American bass VFL18...I'm going to run 1 amp per coil! Cause I know they are not putting out what they should be strapped!

What if your subs are in 2 separate boxes, will you still have the same problems and if so will this solution still work?
