Gaia Project Review - Space Me Baby One More Time

Ойындар

Terra Mystica is but Efka's first board game love. The follow up, Gaia Project, could be a spectacular improvement or a Hollywood sequel style disaster. Or maybe it's a bit of both?

    I know this is not a rules video, but I believe you do not just get the advanced technology tile when you reach the top of your track

    Argh! This is what we get when we don't follow the script to the letter. We didn't mean to imply that, slip of the tongue.

    I actually find it creatively stimulating that the game communicates the ideas behind each race through their unique mechanics and lets you fill in the blanks with your imagination without telling you anything outright... but that's just me, I guess.

    Yeah my one complaint about Gaia Project is the lack of even a sentence of flavour about each of the races. But having played half a dozen 2p games (First 4p tomorrow yey!) we have felt each race played sufficiently different to be distinct. But seriously how hard to include just one or two lines? A motto or slogan, a quote from a leader? Still Terra Mystica was (is !) great at more than 2 (ok maybe merely very good at 3) but poor at 2. Gaia is very engaging 2p. And that technology track board is so much better than the cult track. It is so much more central to the game. We both keep looking at it, coveting the advances on *every* track. Great review of a great game

    Great review!! My wife and I bought Gaia Project in January 2018. Since then we played it five times and I lost. BUT we love this game. We still have a look at the rule book from time to time which is ok. There is just one advice I can give and I try to teach myself. You will not win when you do not play with your chosen race.

    Your conclusion summed it up perfectly; this game certainly not for everyone. Scoring the solo game right up there with doing your own taxes. Trying to get over that initial hurdle after one game, but it is tough.

    With all this corona situation gamers bought out all the good games. And localized Gaia in Russia is out of stock. I thought of buying it as my birthday present. I want to try some 4x civ game that isn't much ugly for 2 players. Some days ago this game were in stock. But not today. I will have to buy Gloomhaven, I eagerly want to try it too, but im afraid my wife won't appreciate it. Because its complex and dark. Anyway, thanks for your emotional videos, you two are so creative and fun! Just wanted to share this minor "tragedy" of my own :)

    Great review. This is one of the best first game experiences I've had in a long time, just an amazing game. I had never played Terra Mystica and only lost by two to a guy that had played Terra Mystica "many times", so I don't think it's too punishing or complex. Third place was one point behind me, and he had played TM once. The 4th player... well, I think we broke him. I'm really looking forward to playing it again - I really tried not to buy it, as several people in my normal group already own it; my copy will be arriving next week. Looking forward to trying several of the races solo.

    Also played it for the first time recently and had never played TM. A guy from my regular group borrowed it from someone in one of his other groups and really enjoyed it. I want to see the other races and scoring conditions and am also tempted to get a copy for my regular group.

    Caverna was my Terra Mystica. I had an affair with A Feast for Odin while we were separated, and then I got remarried to Agricola. My friend an I have played Gaia about 10 to 15 times. It a huge box of mind tickling good Euro times. I agree with you about the tech tracks in comparison to cult tracks. The amount of points that players can get for pursuing those tracks over level 2 can still swing a game to victory, they're just not as essential of a source of points as they are in Terra, where you can get boxed out by priests, which draws the image of a bunch of robbed priests playing basketball, boxing each other out of the paint with elbows in basketball.

    Resource track that can be knocked out of place or mucked up? Not bits that cannot? That's enough to keep me leaning toward Terra Mystica...

  • @Trinketorium

    @Trinketorium

    6 жыл бұрын

    Graeme Knuckey what do you mean? Yes the board can be knocked, like every boardgame, and yes if you do there’s a fair chance bits will move, like every game. Like Terra mystica. Unless you buy an overlay. Like Terra mystica.

  • @graemek7658

    @graemek7658

    6 жыл бұрын

    Trinketorium Your own personal board is always easier to knock than a main board and TM only had two big things to correct if you did, rather than everything. Presumably it's got a decent friction but when I think about it, it's more that a sliding token is what you use to save space on a tiny pocket sized game, just an odd choice in my view...

  • @Trinketorium

    @Trinketorium

    6 жыл бұрын

    Graeme Knuckey why is it a tiny pocket sized game? The tech tree in Gaia is huge, half the size of the main board in TM. It’s equivalent to saying you won’t buy board games because someone might knock the board. You have a small counter in a big space - even if it was knocked it would have to be pretty hard to move it out the entire space.

  • @graemek7658

    @graemek7658

    6 жыл бұрын

    Trinketorium it's how you solve the problem of resources in a pocket size game like Tiny Epic Western, whereas Gaia is clearly not a small game so why scrimp on components? And again, it's just a little thing that makes me prefer Terra Mystica, not to discount all the merits of Gaia.

  • @Trinketorium

    @Trinketorium

    Graeme Knuckey what do you mean “scrimp on components”? It’s a really nice high quality board. Sorry, just really confused by your view and trying to understand it - hope I don’t come across as too argumentative :)

    I think GO still beats both of these, even though there's only two races. And no terraforming. Or citybuilding. It's got lovely wooden bowls though. And the stones go clickety clack.

  • @user-ik2ps1fu5e
    @user-ik2ps1fu5e6 ай бұрын

    Why do people talk about the research tracks like it's something new and amazing. It's already available in TM! Terraforming and range is on the faction boards. More income is on the favor tiles. And more knowledge income is basically priests. GP has less interaction and are more forgiving. And you can't learn the best strategies for the factions as the map always changing. It should pay of to play the same game over and over. So no thanks, i stick with TM.
