    I remember Gabrielle saying long ago, before she knew who she was... whenever she would be in a room with other beautiful women she would feel so insecure. That shocked me because she is one of the MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMEN IN THIS WORLD!!! Look at her now! So open, honest, confident, beautiful and royal. She’s freaking amazing.

    Honestly back in those days when that movie was made, blacks an whites didn’t betray or belittle each other . It was Hollywood making movies like bring it on that sparked the hatred again after 30 years of being at peace But you know since then people have been raised to be victims in a society that’s literally for them an no one else

The fear of inferior people who know the time of the free ride is close to being over. And they know if the playing field is level and equality reigns, most of them can't compete.

    I like Gabrielle Union a lot as an actress, but the regret about her portrayal of Isis in “Bring It On” makes no sense to me. I listened to her reflection on this show and read her letter to Isis from her new memoir “You Got Anything Stronger?” As I did both, I had a strong feeling that she was being completely unfair to herself and, not to be dismissive of her emotions, but overly dramatic in writing to black girls and women that “I failed you and myself.” Of course I realize that our perspectives are different, but it’s as if she’d watched some other movie from the one I saw. For those who haven’t seen the film, when we meet Isis in “Bring It On,” she and her fed up inner city Clovers teammates confront Kirsten Dunst and Eliza Dushku’s characters, Torrance and Missy, respectively. Missy has just joined cheerleading captain Torrance’s suburban team, the Toros, and during practice, she has recognized one of their routines and the accompanying chants as copies of the inner city Clovers’ work. After a Clovers performance at a football game, where Missy has taken Torrance to show her proof of the plagiarism. Isis and fellow members of their cheer team spot them and demand that they hand over the tape they falsely - but reasonably, based on history - think the two white girls had just made. Isis quotes a stolen Toros chant with a uniquely black cultural origin and says, “I know you don’t think a white girl made that s--- up.” She goes on to state her exasperation with whites “putting some blonde hair on it (whatever “it” may be) and calling it something different.” What more did Isis need to do in order to satisfy Union’s desire for her to have railed against the history of theft? Isis’ dialogue on the issue is perfectly direct as is. It’s worth noting that during the above exchange, another Clovers member, Jenelope, expresses her desire to skip the talking and “just beat these Buffys down.” The way I’ve always seen it, that character, played by the late Natina Reed, represents a raw and visceral reaction to the routine stealing, which the story does need for a sense of realism. In Reed’s capable hands, that part of the movie, which is a comedy after all, provides comic relief. And that’s necessary to avoid an awkwardly tense moment in an otherwise more lighthearted film. This is where I think the beauty of Union’s choices as an actor portraying Isis seem to be lost on her in retrospect. As team captain, Isis is understandably more tempered than the hotheaded Jenelope. And that level of maturity is every bit as necessary and authentic as Jenelope’s attitude. Effective leaders know that cooler heads must prevail whenever possible. They also encourage those whom they lead to think the same way and refrain from popping off recklessly. I’ve always liked the way Isis showed great leadership abilities while keeping her eyes on the proverbial prize. As for the end of the movie - spoiler alert, in case you haven’t seen the entire film or all of this interview - Union and Dunst’s character Torrance share a laugh as they BOTH acknowledge that Isis’ team deservedly won the big competition. To me, it’s unfortunate that the studio audience encouraged Union’s comment that Isis should’ve been combative in that scene. Torrance had approached Isis to congratulate her, so for Isis to take out her anger over centuries of racial oppression on Torrance in THAT moment would’ve been misdirected anger. And given the tone of the movie, again a comedy, that would’ve been very amateurish filmmaking. And what on earth would that have accomplished? Actually, from the moment that a shocked and appalled Torrance finds out about the history of cheer theft, she insists that her team use only original material. So it’s clear that she’s not the enemy. If Isis wants to give someone a piece of her mind, she needs to find out who’s been doing the videotaping and copying of the inner city teams’ routines and let THEM have it. So I hope Union can rest assured that the wokeness police won’t be coming for her anytime soon.

    I'm usually not a Michelle Obama, high road kind of person, but I think Isis was great just as she was. She was clearly angry at the theft and she expressed it in the movie. At the end when Torrance says Isis and her crew were better, Isis agrees. Not in the tone Union used on this talk show, but I don't think that tone would have been appropriate in that moment. The point of racism is to distract you from your work. It's to exhaust you. Isis was mad about the theft and had every right to be, but she was also a new captain, determined to get her squad to heights it hadn't reached before. After accomplishing her goal, she chose to relish her victory with her squad rather than rail about the racism and theft at Torrance, who she knew wasn't responsible for the plagiarism in the first place. She chose to celebrate her win instead of taunting the Toros over their loss. That's not muzzling the character and that's not taking the high road. That's just focusing on what actually matters.

    As a black woman I agree to disagree because Isis was plenty angry. She was angry for most of the movie and needed to chill the heck out. But its interesting to hear her speak on it nonetheless

    SUCH AN INTELLIGENT WOMAN! Side note: Why she still look like she just finished filming Bring It On! 😂 Black is BEAUTIFUL baaaby. 🙌🏾👸🏾

  • @Shae_3
    @Shae_32 жыл бұрын

    Her character in Bring It On was the way it should have been. The level of growth she has now at her age was not the same when she did the movie. You only know what you know in that moment. If every lesson is a blessing why reflect with regret on something you didn’t say when you didn’t even know to say it. But to some they’ll say she is sounding deep but it’s full of crap! Gab you had no issue taking those parts back in the day being the popular mean girl. That’s the past learn from it and grow but at least take some freaking ownership, you chose to act that way with that character. Not sure who she showing out for or trying to convince she’s black but………they know, we know.

    4:30 the young people & teens had The character on "Bring It On" that famous .. I bet they all would be wondering now what to regret ... Her "saying" shoulda stuck we with our routine than "we could have done that" Prepared for ultimate domination ... Because we doesn't sees the Clovers in school 🏫... and they bf ... Guest what I have never thought that of Toror Shipment but now ... Lol, that's funny she probably did thought they was doing a routine by a well known popular dance & step instructor ... Lol he wrong for that ... Y'all them looked as if they was just in the race competing for nationals as Cheerleaders ... God or something made it fun for them ... Lol, Look out now Oprah little Sister ... Tamron brought up that the movie wasn't what they had us thinking it was ... They & Them it was all they ... Then, them saying but that's our cheers oh, we going to nationals this year and we never ever been ... Otha ... Oprah wants to hear her say and explain all that ... Now ... Right Now ...

I'm 67 and I fell in love with you when I saw Deliver us from Eva .you were great and that was a funny movie. My 29 yr old Granddaughter bought it for me years ago..lol. glad you were honest about the age difference. It's like men get stronger. Anyway I enjoyed you Gabby. Never ghetto loud talking cussing or acting a fool. Always down to Earth with class. Thank God no big ass or tits..you can capture a man without all the surgery.Tamara cam learn from you
