It goes against a lot of common opinions but I really did love the scene with her and Aries. And even more so the scene where she said she wanted Xena to hurt and she was jealous because Xena loved another woman. That was absolutely genius writing on the parts of all the writers in the show. They dipped their foot in uncharted territory with the Xena and Gabrielle relationship storyline. Gabrielle felt how lots of people do when jealousy takes over.....and then she felt bad when she realized that it almost got Xena killed and that was when she attacked Aries for acting on her vulnerable state. Simply amazing.

I agree and the late great Kevin Smith was also a great actor. I know people talk about the chemistry between Lawless and O'Connor, and rightfully so, but it seems everyone in that great cast had chemistry with each other, it was the great writing that would let that play out!!

I know it's hardly original, but when I was a kid, this was the first time I'd ever storytelling like this - were you returend to an earlier scene and saw it from another perspective. The flashback with the extra shot of Ares standing there blew my mind the first time I saw it.

When xena came out I was like 14 I think. I was waiting every week to watch the episodes and then discuss it with my friends. Even my Grandma enjoyed watching it. Lol. I enjoyed it for more reasons than her of course. But a great friendship can become a great relationship and those two were soulmates. For better and for worse. If only we could get to see them on screen again playing their respective characters

What a really great episode - it's all in the dialogue. The root reason G betrayed X - "I wanted to betray her! I gave Her Everything (her love? Her heart?) and it meant nothing to her! I hated her for loving someone else." (Suggesting Monogamous relationship where G loves X exclusively, and wants it in return. Also showing Gabrielle as jealous of Lao Ma and any Love X feels for her. "You "owe" someone so much...you would just throw away these last few years..." Switch "owe" for "love".

EXACTLY!!!!! When Xena said yes and walked away that's all it took for Gabby. She became seethingly jealous. The yin and yang. She has her good, but def a decent amount of bad in her too. Had she let the good win, she would have accepted it, cried, sulked, and been miserable hoping for Xena to come back.

Lmao who would trust Ares who pops up outa nowhere

Her expression @ 0:53 & screams in the fire afterwards are top-notch blood curdling, and especially noticeable on a show known for its frequently fabulously campy nature. Her voice really did sound full of both the burning pain of emotional turmoil and betrayal, and also the incredible physical pain of literally burning alive.

You know... Just gals being pals 🤣

Even though Gabrielle KNEW of Xena's previous life she assumed ALL of it was evil. Even though, Xena didn't purposefully keep Lao Ma's existence from Gabrielle she didn't deem it necessary to share. Gabrielle FELT that she was the ONLY one who KNEW Xena intimately as a person. Her friendship and support no longer appeared exclusive in her eyes. I mean, Xena was willing down to go the path of vengeance for Lao Ma. There was some self doubt as to whether she (Gabby) would someday only be a story to tell for Xena.

In all fairness, when Gabrielle said she was going to leave Xena for Perdicas she basically indicated that Perdicas meant more to her than Xena did so yeah that excuse kind of falls apart. Also, Xena let Gabrielle go willingly because it was Gabrielle's happiness that mattered. Gabrielle got petty because she realized she wasn't the source of Xena's goodness alone. That someone before her had nurtured it..in fact two people did. Lao Ma and M'Lila. So yeah Gabby got petty and because of that...HOPE lol.

The classic "My Best Friend is Mine Alone!" It's so easy to place the blame on Gabrielle and then you realize she did what a lot of people think about doing but never have the guts to. Nothing hurts more than realizes that your BFF had a more important BFF before you. Gabrielle lashed out in the heat of the moment and regretted it. She definitely did not come out of all this unscathed.

I completely agree and you said that very well. Oftentimes when a character gets jealous and feels replaced after someone they love develops a bond with someone else, we see that character as weak and even pathetic. But I think that's unfair We're social creatures who thrive on connection. It's natural to be hurt and resentful when we feel a wedge has been driven between us and someone we love.

First, we need to accept the past of the people we have in our lives, our spouses, our friends. Second, if we try to isolate our loved ones from also having other people they care about it s possessiveness and toxicity, not a healthy and authentic feeling of love. It s actually what abusers do. Gabrielle was very jealous of every living creature that came in contact with Xena, except maybe Joxer.

I think we all know whenever she says *best friend* it was because they couldn’t say girlfriend in the 90’s on tv … ugh

I grew up in DIC Sailormoon. and Amara and Michelle (Haruka and Michiru) were always weirdly close. so when I looked at the original anime and learned they weren't cousins it made total sense and I always kinda suspected. but with Xena and Gabrielle I didn't see it till much much later like when i was in my twenties

On one hand a limited series with thr original actresses, fine long as it over don just to ackownledge it exsistse. A reboot that would take away from the original series. But Xena's death felt forced to me, so i'm onboard fixing that 100%. I hates show just character just because they can, Game of thrones and 24 come to mind good examples.

Nothing beats good cinematography on film for me. It has a texture that digital will never have and is able to create mood through lighting choices and other natural means.

rant: This is about the Bitter Suite episodes, at the end when Gabrielle crossed over and Xena couldn't. My problem is Gabby shouldn't have been able to cross over either. she held a major secret too, which was reveled in this episode. I angers my mother and I til this day. Listen to words she used, her reasoning's alone should have stopped her from going through that water without being burned. Yes i know Xena killed that guy and lied about it, but he was a bad that killed her own mother, get with it Gabs. She said so herself, her hatred and jealousy nearly destroyed her best friend, almost got her killed. because, reasons.

It's technically not a secret though. She and Xena acknowledged part of this in the episode with the Green Dragon. While the full issue wasn't addressed it also wasn't consciously hidden from Xena. Gabrielle herself didn't fully realize the depth of her feelings as 'jealousy' only that the taking of an 'innocent life' was something she would not stand for. That's why this episode was necessary.

I think Gabrielle crossed over because at that time she felt liberated. She hadn't realized back then the very root of the problem that was mostly subconsciously hidden to the point where not only she didn't acknowledge it but she didn't even realize it. In her mind she did it to save Xena and her intentions had been good. Xena on the other hand at that point felt the guilt profoundly. She hadn't been fooling herself and her mentality wasn't playing tricks on her. It is like when you go to the therapist and you try to find the root of the problem but it is not always easy because you can't identify it yourself since it is too deeply ingrained in parts of your soul you can't reach or are at a place you don't even know they exist. That can create phobias and become a source of crippling emotional problems which later on happened with Gabrielle that had to go to the temple and go through all those trials to get the epiphany and understand what she truly felt and what really motivated her. She had been lying to herself without realizing it. Like a placebo effect. But I believe that when she crossed over the barrier in Bitter Suite she really felt as if she had cleansed herself and that belief got her through. It is not so much as the objective fact as it was the subjective way of feeling over a fact. This is why Xena couldn't pass until she let go of that burden that she had acknowledged before she got to that point but chose to keep it a secret for her own reasons.

1:47 only on the DVD set that I notice this. Gabrielle ( Renee O'Connor) or a stunt double appears nude from the full backside for a second. On TV when it first aired the second went by so fast and because it was using CGI with the fire effects, no one noticed. Everyone wants to know why this was done? What was the point? It was weird and gratuitous. We don't even know if that is a male or female nude from behind because the hair is very short similar to the later seasons Gabrielle with short hair but the fit/athletic sinewy body looks like it might be male and so it could be that the stunt double was male. Who knows. Very strange. There's no reason or point to this.

@@ginay8800 He wasn't filming a movie actually he was at a studio lot in China waiting for a ride and decided to climb a prop wall for a movie that was being filmed there (he was not in the movie), there were no safety measures in place and he ended up falling 3 stories and died from his injuries later in hospital.
