One of the shows best fight scenes. The concept of Alti’s powers is so cool and made for exceptionally innovative television. Xena is epic, hands down. Not to mention the vision incorporation in season 4 was mind blowing.

To think about it I think the show The 100 was heavily inspired by Xena Warrior Princess with the sci-fi and warrior aspects. Xena and Lexa are very similar both Brunette, blue eyed and tough warrior women. Gabrielle and Clarke both Blonde, blue eyed and healing women but become warriors themselves as time goes on throughout both shows.

Alti was Xenas most challenging enemy! Lucy Lawless acting in this show was simply brilliant! She never held back!

A show that was always ahead of it's time and still is and forever will be.

This is incredible writing and WAY before it’s time, imagine if Xena had a streaming service back when it’s was popular. Amazon, Disney or HBO could never.

I'm happy to see I wasn't the only one. I was like 11-12 years old when this episode first came out and watching Xena and Gabrielle getting beaten like this, combined with the crucifixion flashes was too much for my little 12yo self and had crying.

Alti was possibly Xena’s biggest threat. I enjoyed watching her and Xena more than Callisto.

This show took female empowerment to another level for the better. The fight sequences and storyline and actors for this show played their roles really well. How Lucy lawless did get a golden globe for her role blows my mind. These two gals made a great acting combo. 👍🏿. This scene had the emotion and etc. Also they made it believable.

I agree with everyone. This is like maybe my favorite episode and one of my favorite fight scenes of the whole show. It's so epic. Ugh. Man. It's so juicy. Great acting. All the stunts from Xena, minus the wacky comedic ones, still hold up well. Like honestly, all those CW shows could learn from the sequences on Xena. They don't make action for TV like this anymore. Just saying. But yeah, S4 as a whole is such a wonderful, emotional journey.

Alti vs. Xena is definitely my favorite showdown! All of their fights are so intense but this one tops them all! Alti really lets loose with her unique spiritual powers and I love the Xena/Gabby/Naiyima team-up with the spiritual mehndi!

When Xena summoned the spiritual chakram I whooped. That was so badass.

This was such an emotional roller-coaster episode for me when it premiered. I was like 12 years old when this first came out and beig such a big Xena fan at that age, watching Xena and Gabrielle getting beaten and tortured like this, combined with the crucifixion flashes and the blood on Gabrielle's hands and feet was too much for my little 12yo self and had crying. Still one if my favorite episodes.

Alti is SCARY AS HELL. Imagine someone with these types of powers to make you feel any sort of pain you've experienced in the past. You would need some form of spiritual powers to counteract it.

Not really. In season 5's "Them Bones, Them Bones" Yakut from the Northern Amazons covered Alti's bones with amber in order to trap her soul. I guess that means that Alti cannot reincarnate anymore.

@@Bmhtsos18 Because of the amber, Alti couldn't return in _Xena's_ proper lifetime anymore. She was trying to cheat her way back to life after being killed in Sin Trade when they sealed her in Them Bones. That's all "one" existence. Every other time we see her is a future life, like India or the present, or an alternate timeline like When Fates Collide. Those instances can be messed with, but her proper life in Xena's time is as the Siberian shaman and that's over for good.

Man, Alti was badass. I think, she was THE best enemy in the show, because she did not only have fight skills, but also spiritual mastery. Now _that's_ what a strong character is. She may be twisted and power-hungry, but she is very reflective and attuned to the spiritual world (in Xena universe; I don't believe in spirits IRL), dedicated enough to spend years on gaining that kind of power, even built some kind of philosophy on top of that. In her own way, she was the Sith Lord version of the Jedi Lao Ma, her path was not a mistake, it was just different, it worked in different ways and relied heavily on 'dark' emotions and strivings (like greed for power). She was right, actually, when she said that Lao Ma's path is not for Xena. Even though Xena has understood and mastered it, she always enjoyed the fight too much, she used the power of 'dark' emotions and strivings, she was just _built_ for Alti's ways. The difference is that Xena refused to succumb to them because she knew that kind of mindset leads to immorality and unneeded cruelty. Alti hasn't refused, and it doesn't make her wrong, she simply had different priorities. Her mindset and her philosophy were completely in tune, although it made her quite a destructive force. The whole conflict with Alti is so fucking interesting. And Xena looks even more interesting because of that. Because we have Alti who uses negative emotions and it agrees with her views and instincts, we have Lao Ma who uses clear head and passiveness (conscious surrender of will) which agrees with her views and instincts, and we have Xena who has instincts of Alti and prefers the ways of Lao Ma. A walking talking conflict on a neverending quest of redemption. I wish we had more characters like that in movies. It's all about silly romances and revenge nowdays, ugh.

at least sam raimi showed that the love between xena and gabrielle was honest, respectful and powerful and never once did the show's actors preached that men were bad and women were better

it was about time for this scene to be uploaded since it was long ago requested alti was the most underrated and powerful villan there is and my personal favorite, she had so many potentials if she had been writen differently, she could do whatever she wanted just by reminding her victims painful memories or losses by overloading them with unendurable emotions memories paralyzing their victims nothing can actually top that. i also hoped that she would use memories such as solon’s death how she cursed solon (considering xena and alti’s dark past) xena's deseasced brother or even better the pain she caused and all those unspeakable things she did as warlock and for gabrielle probably she could remind her the death of her lover, perdicas, one hell of a psychic power there is and thats what makes her so special and wonderfully terrifying such a shame that this show didn’t have enough supernatural element also such a meaningful message this episode has: help other and you never know when or how the universe will pay you back that was a chance for xena to be redeemed for her past sins, and the irony that xena represents sth good and pure the arminestra leader in a parallel universe regardless all the pain and suffering she’s put ppl throught the story about karmas never ending is that when gabrielle went to egypt after 6x22 she might met xena’s reincarnation, who knows 2:22 also what a beautiful message for every kind of haters everywhere

@@hitmanshax1200 Η Καλλιστω θεωρειται villain γιατι αν και εχει συμπαθητικο backstory σκοτωνει δεξια και αριστερα πιστευοντας οτι η Ζηνα την εκανε κακια οταν σκοτωσε την οικογενεια της. Η Καλλιστω σκοτωσε τον αντρα της Γαβριελλας, πηγε να σκοτωσει τη μανα της Ζηνας, σκοτωσε τη μανα του Ηρακλη πισω στο χρονο (ο Ιολαος το αλλαξε αυτο) και ολα αυτα μονο και μονο επειδη η Γαβριελλα και ο Ηρακλης ειναι φιλοι της Ζηνας. Ναι η Αλτι καταραστηκε το παιδι της Ζηνας αλλα η Καλλιστω βοηθησε την Ελπιδα να σκοτωσει το παιδι της Ζηνας. Επισης η Καλλιστω ειναι ισαξια της Ζηνας στη μαχη και στο στρατηγικο μυαλο αν και τρελη και αργοτερα εγινε αθανατη, θεα και δαιμονας. Μην ξεχνας επισης οτι η Καλλιστω μπορουσε να χειριστεί το Σακραμ εξισου καλα με τη Ζηνα, ενω αρχικα η Ζηνα ηταν η μονη που μπορουσε να το κανει. Η Αλτι ειναι απλα μια θνητη σαμανισα με ψυχικες δυναμεις και σχεδον καθολου μαχητικη ικανοτητα. Οχι οτι η Αλτι ηταν χαλια σαν χαρακτηρας, ισα ισα, αλλα φιλε η Καλλιστω ηταν το κατι αλλο στη σειρα. Αυτο που λες οτι η Καλλιστω σκοτωσε τους γονεις της αθελα της συνεβη στο επεισοδιο Armageddon Now του Ηρακλη και ηταν μια αλλη πραγματικοτητα που δημιουργησε η Καλλιστω οταν σκοτωσε την Αλκμηνη πριν γεννηθει ο Ηρακλης και αλλαξε ολη την ιστορια. Ο Ιολαος ξαναπηγε στο παρελθον και εσωσε την Αλκμηνη και ξαναεκανε την ιστορια σωστη, οποτε το οτι η Καλλιστω σκοτωσε τους γονεις της καταλαθος ειναι σαν να μην εγινε ποτε.

@Joke Master Το πρώτο πράγμα που κάνει η Καλλιστώ όταν την πρώτο βλέπουμε στη σειρά είναι να πιάσει το Σακραμ, κάτι που μόνο η Ζηνα μπορούσε να κάνει μέχρι τότε. Από μια τόσο απλή σκηνή καταλάβαμε όλοι, ακόμα και η ίδια η Ζηνα, πόσο πολύ απειλητική είναι η Καλλιστώ.

This was the episode for the funeral of Gabrielle's long, blonde hair. She rocked the short hair too, but man!!!! When she temporarily had the long hair with the yellow outfit from India....😍😍😍😍😍😍

Fun fact: her round weapon called a chakram is actually a real Indian weapon

Alti is the strongest foe Xena ever encountered in her adventures. Callisto isn't even close to Alti's powers.

Those creepy crucifixion sequences still give me chills up and down my spine.

The way Alti says Xena's name just sound so sinister and condescending. One of her most diabolical enemies.

That was a hell of a fight!! And an excellent scene!!👌👌

I just loved the fact that Xenas toughest foes were alll women. This show OOZED female empowerment! I would have loved to see this show made with todays Technology

@@Xhanatos What? lol. Herc was never a foe of Xena on her show and she also beat him one-on- one once on his show but she became distracted during the fight and he gained the upper hand. Ares in my eyes was also never a real foe of hers, he just wanted her for himself and lets be honest she spanked Aries in a fight every single time. Ceasar was a good foe but he didnt have the impact of Callisto & Alti.💁🏾‍♂️

WOW! I gotta say that I really enjoy the way the TV series, "Xena: Warrior Princess," had came to be! It was very fantastic and sensational all together with the best cast and crew ever assembled in having made the series in all those six or seven years!

This was Peak Xena right here. Absolute spirit writing from one of the GOAT TV shows.

One of the best scenes of the show honestly. They really tried to show some love while being as respectful as you can with a campy show that had a limited budget even for how pop it was. Another reason I will watch anything Sam Raimi's name is one :)

Could you imagine if this version of Alti survived? She'd be unstoppable. Same thing in When Fates Collide, Alti is far too dangerous.

This is my all time favorite episode and favorite battle. The past may be tremendously painful, and all people will die in the future eventually. If you know who you really are and what you want in life right here right now, you can not only just survive but surpass life's many challenges.

I know Lucy said she hated doing these fight scenes, but these actresses sell those fight scenes so well. Kudos to them and the stunt people.

This episode has stuck with me all these years.

This is one of my favorite episodes and one of my favorite scenes! :D What an amazing fighting scene! :D And great storytelling! Alti was such a great villain. Callisto, too. Both in their own way were masterpieces!

I think she looks better with her short hair, at least in this season. Next season when it started growing back she looked awful.

@@sxnder I know from an interview that Renee O'Connor had, she said that she had tried on a wig for the Epiphany/Vision scenes Gabbi saw through Alti during their fight in this episode. So to answer your question, it would have been the decision of the show and not Renee's because at the end of this episode Gabbi decides to cut her hair anyway. Usually, it's the Show (Producers, Head Writers...) that make the decisions on a character change and how/when/where the show is going to go in as season progress.

I loved Gabrielle's long hair. It was gorgeous especially in "Devi." Her short hair didn't fit the time period and looked awful in season 4. They grew it out a little so it looked better but never great. The modern cut was a bad move IMO.

@@Nepthu you can put Renee O'Connor in anything and she still LOOKS great! Actually, Renee's short hair DID suite her! Gabbi was a character who loved change. That's why you see her in different outfits throughout the seasons of Xena. Her character actually grew as the seasons progressed anyway and she was always doing something with her hair, fashion styles as well. If she had stayed the same boring Gabrielle that she was when she met Xena, her character would NEVER have grown and would've been boring all throughout the Xena seasons! I'm glad Renee added changes to Gabrielle!

Now THIS was a good fight!

Omg I love Gabrielle so much. She will give her all to protect Xena and I just love how much heart and soul they put into her character. She's the real star of the show for me

Definitely. She had a harder time with Alti than she does killing the Olympian Gods, fighting Odin and killing Mephistopheles. Alti doesn’t really have fighting skill during her time with the amazons, but her shamanistic powers kept her feared by others. Her fighting power comes from her re-incarnated form in the future who is a warrior and conqueror. The combination of the two is what we see at play here and it was pretty fierce.

@@jcb3933 when they got to the actual era they realized that much of her power came from all the evil of the world so her shamaness powers kinda upgrade her actual powers in general that's why Xena had to use her karmic power which is really different from actual power,I think if it would have not being for Najara to help them they would have died for real

@@enribelramirez9480 that is quite true about her shamanistic powers. Alti has always been such an interesting character and wish we knew more about her origins and lust for evil power. Her physical fighting abilities though come from her future reincarnated self as a warrior and conqueror.

This is only my second time watching this scene, and it's more brutal than when I 1st saw it as a kid.

Yeah. This scene rattled me during its original release (age 11). Especially the treatment of Gab. Possibly the series' most intense fight.

Definitely this is one of the greatest show ever a excellent episode with beautiful special effects! ✨✨✨

Oh my God. I so remember the Alti storyline. God it’s been years and I’m still geeking out.

For me, this was the top best fight the show had as well as the the acting. This scene gave me the most shivers of the entire series. Alti, and Callisto were two of the top baddest motherfuckers in this show. They surely knew how to be the best villans when it came to screen time.

*thank you very much for having diffused the second part of the episode the power of Alti and powerful and frightening Xena and Gabriel learned the Hindu for the interior lives to pass present and future they will always be there to fight it and Gabriel and Xena will always meet*

This was an epic fight, although I didn't enjoyed seeing Xena and Gabrielle in so much pain.

I did this too! I got it done for the Xena/Hercules convention and went all 3 days.

I just realized in the later seasons Xena started to get worked by enemies lol And I got sad when they cut Gabrielles hair Lol

The way Xena / Lucy delivered "You B****" line here. Pure gold.

I think this scene is one....if not the best of the whole series.

I love that things get tough and things get hard for her and Gabrielle Xena never gives up

Tapert was married to Lawless at the time. Maybe one of them thought Renee was looking too good with her long hair.

All im going to say is i love all of xena season also this especially this episode im not go lie Alti had them powers. were if something bad happened to you she would make u feel them again i wish i had powers like that but i would only use it for good

Alti could see Xena and Gabrielle's fate so why did she even bother trying to change it. It hasn't worked for her for several lifetimes

Also Naiyima just flung Alti like a rag doll when she tried to harm her, LOL.

Lao Ma's powers are difficult to harness and to master it requires deep meditation and immersion into a certain mindset which takes years to accomplish. Also Lao Ma's powers come and go like the wind if you don't have a good handle on it.

@@jameslyon2338 No, Alti is not more powerful than Lao ma. always when facing Xena she uses the worst Memories of Xena as a weapon. In addition she has more knowledge than Xena. but always when Alti faced someone with knowledge equal to hers, she lost it was like this with Cyane and it was like this now with Naima.

Claire Stansfield said she took Miranda Richardson 's work as an example in the TV series Merlin. Interview: " I had just seen Merlin (TV miniseries, Steve Barron, 1998), at the time, and I thought Miranda Richardson did such a wonderful job as Mab. I asked Rob Tapert if I could play Alti like Mab, with the eye makeup and the whispery growl, and he said "Yeah!" I wanted to make it more scary and thought that was a way to do it. Whenever I get into that "wicked witch" mode I just "become" that evil character. In BETWEEN THE LINES I am so unbelievably evil, it's just beyond evil ".

My mom named me Xena

Xena is so great that even her stunt woman got her own movie after this, and I think worked with Kill Bill therafter !! The best show all around !!

Kind of hard to take Alti seriously when she sounds like Rita Repulsa with a sore throat, and that’s saying something.
